Family Trip to Washington D.C.
For Thanksgiving, we decided to get out of town! We have been wanting to take our kids to Washington D.C. and this week off from school provided the perfect opportunity. If you are interested in making the trip to Washington D.C. (with or without kids), this post is for you. I am sharing what museums we visited, where we ate, what monuments are a 'must-see', and all the experiences you won't want to miss. Everyone - young and old- needs to visit Washington D.C. at least once.

Fall Trail Mix Bar
Once a month, our middle school PTA hosts some kind of 'staff appreciation' event. Sometimes it's a full meal. Other times it's just a treat. For October, we decided to do a 'Trail Mix Bar'. I love snacky foods (who doesn't?!!) so this was a fun event to plan. This 'Trail Mix Bar' would be perfect for a birthday party, baby shower or any event where you want to present yummy munchies in a cute way.

Post Thanksgiving - Pre Christmas
Happy Last Day of November! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving with you family and friends. November flew by and the minute we put our turkey dishes away, my youngest daughter changed our letter board to this :)
Today's post covers all sorts of things-- like how to do a seasonal table scape with lunch sacks, ideas for where to buy a letter board (and what to put on it), how to make a birthday cake topper from pipe cleaners, a recipe for a holiday treat, where to go hiking if you want to see real dino fossils, and the best place to get a kiss under the mistletoe. Sound interesting? Keep reading below!

Crafty Thanksgiving Ideas for Kids
I had so much fun in October making Halloween treats. And you all seemed to like them too- because several of you have reached out and asked for Thanksgiving ideas! I will probably make most of my 'crafty' foods the actual week of Thanksgiving. But I thought I would do a round up today of the ideas I am hoping to create. I think this will give both you and I, a 'head-start' on some Thanksgiving fun.

Thanksgiving Pilgrim Hat Cookies
I recently attended a teaching conference and the speaker emphasized the importance of traditions. She explained that traditions help us feel like we belong and that we are loved. A tradition can be something done in a classroom or it can be something done at home. Holiday traditions that are repeated year after year, give us something to look forward to. Holiday traditions build a sense of family and help create lasting memories.
I share all of this because my oldest recently surprised me with her understanding of our family traditions. I was asking her about Thanksgiving and she said 'Well... for Thanksgiving- we always go to Mimi's and we always make Pilgrim Hat Cookies'. This made me laugh because although I do like making edible crafts with my girls around holiday times, I never considered these fun little cookies to be a 'family tradition'.
But to my girls, they are! These cookies are not just cute and sweet. They are a symbol of our family and our love for each other. And because of that, we will be making these every November! Keep reading for the recipe and ideas for creating your own Thanksgiving traditions. (See our peanut free pilgrim hat cookies here & the no-bake version here and another one here.)

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars & More
Our friends hosted a Thanksgiving party on Saturday-- it was a Friendsgiving Party. A Friendsgiving is a fun way to celebrate being thankful, with your friends! The food at Friendsgiving Party is the same as a traditional Thanskgiving meal. But instead of one person being in charge of the entire meal, it is pot-luck style. I signed up to bring a dessert. After a quick Pinterest search, I settled on Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars. I liked that they were a traditional 'pumpkin' dessert- but with a twist!

Salt Dough Napkin Rings
About this time every year, my girls like to make salt dough. It's cold outside and the holidays put us all in the mood to craft. Last year, we used our salt dough to make Christmas ornaments (you can read more about that here). This time, I spied a cute "Salt Dough Leaf Napkin Holder" tutorial over on Imperial Sugar's website and the idea stuck.

This salt dough recipe is a bit different than the one we used last year. It reminded me a bit of making playdough. Here is the recipe via the Imperial Sugar website.
- 2 cups salt
- 1 cup water, divided
- 1 cup cornstarch
- Tin foil covered baking sheet
- Red, yellow and orange food coloring
- Leaf shaped cookie cutter
- Straw
- Ribbon, twine and/or tulle
- Paint Pen
Directions:
- Stir salt into 1/2 cup of water in a medium saucepan.
- Cook over medium-low heat until hot.
- Remove from heat.
- In a bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup of water with the cornstarch until smooth.
- Add the cornstarch mixture to the salt mixture.
- Return the saucepan to the stove and cook, stirring constantly over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens into the consistency of stiff mashed potatoes.
- Turn mixture out onto a glass plate and cover with a damp towel.
- Allow to cool, then divide dough into 3 equal parts. Add red food coloring to one, yellow to the second and orange (often a combination of red and yellow) to the third batch.
- Flatten the dough with a rolling pin or with your hands. Use the leaf cookie cutter to cut out multiple shapes. Make a hole at the top of each leaf with a straw.
- Bake the leaves on a tin foil lined baking sheet at 250 degrees for 2-3 hours until completely hard.
- Let cool, then add details with a paint pen.
- Attach to cloth napkins with ribbon, twine, or tulle.

Craft It: Salt Dough Turkeys
We are home all week- no school due to Thanksgiving. And thankfully, our family all lives nearby, so we don't have to travel! To keep my girls (and myself) happy, we crafted today.
Using our 'tried and true' salt dough recipe, the girls made turkeys! Afton is old enough to make the dough her self, I just supervised. Then she brought down all of our goodies from CraftProjectIdeas.com. Beads, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, and glitter.
This project is easy enough to do, your little ones will love pushing beads into the soft dough. Your big kids will find a way to make it 'their own'. When we started working on these, I had something totally different in mind. Afton thought of this design. Leave it to a 7 year old to 'out craft' her momma :)
The turkeys are now sitting on the table, drying. The girls hope they will be 'dry and ready' by Thanksgiving. We'll have to wait and see. Those are some chunky birds!
What are you doing this Thanksgiving week?

Bake It: Pilgrim Hat Cookies {Peanut Free}
We have made these cookies every year. They are easy, 'no bake', and now 'peanut free'!

I apologize in advance for the iphone pics. But I chose to shower and do my hair instead of set-up a pretty photo with my real camera. I know you understand ;)
I printed out Thanksgiving 'party circles' and cut them use a 2inch circle punch. I put the Pilgrim Hat Cookies in a gold cupcake liner then wrapped the entire thing in plastic wrap and tied it with a bow. This made them look cute and travel easily to school.
The Thanksgiving 'party circles' are from Three Little Monkeys Studio- you can download them for free!
You can see our past Pilgrim Hat Cookies here. I made those with a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. I loved that recipe, but it wasn't 'school friendly' due to the peanut butter. These are easy enough for the kiddos to make themselves. You could have the supplies ready and the little ones could make them while they wait for Thanksgiving dinner to cook :)

So this year, we changed the recipe a bit. Simply take Fudge Stripe Cookies and add a Hershey Kiss Bell to the top. Use icing to attach the top of the hat to the brim. You can pipe icing on in the shape of a buckle. Or use a yellow m&m for the hat detail. (You could even skip that part if piping stresses you out, they look cute even without the band/buckle!)
