Upcycling a tshirt into a fancy dress

My baby girl who is now 12 has just finished primary school. At the end of the term of grade 6 they have a Leaver's Dinner and of course, she needed a fancy dress to wear.

If you'd like to see how I made it and the inspo behind it then you can see it all here... along with the details of my very first stall at a market!

I think the dress turned out awesome, I think my baby girl looks awesome and oh, do you love the snap below! At the end of the dinner, most of the kids took off their shoes to run on the sand & jump into the waves! Thankfully, she only chose to walk in the water and I couldn't resist snapping a photo of her!

Dalek Dress

A girl in a sewn dress in the style of a bronze coloured Dalek.

My daughter is a keen Doctor Who fan, I think Tardis Blue runs in her blood!

This week was Book Week and yes, somehow I managed to promise her that I'd make her a Dalek costume to wear.  I ummed & ahhed over it for a few months then decided to sew one rather than make an actual Dalek from cardboard. So really, it's a Dalek inspired dress rather than a Dalek costume.

This would also be fab for Cosplay, Halloween and any Science fiction events that may be out there.

I filmed the process here: https://youtu.be/KxXKfOtkQ1c?si=LiLtPtnpxQjA1cHb but alas my iphone 8 let me down and it actually took me 20hours to upload this to Youtube. In the process the sound quality is weird but it's still watchable, just pop on the subtitles.

Harry Potter Quilt

Oops, I was a bit late getting a quilt sewn for my daughter's 11th birthday (late by a week!) but here it is, all finished!

I cut the squares at approx 8.5" and sewed them together then joined it to a minky backing. Ohmygosh, the minky is so soft!

I filmed it all here:  https://youtu.be/-P6S5BK9zu0

I think I'll pop it aside for Christmas, it'll be mid summer then but I think she'll still enjoy it!

Sewing a tea towel (dish towel) dress

Vintage Soldier Dog Tea Towel sewn into a cute v neck patchwork dress

Please be in awe of my latest sewing creation, this fabulous dress made from an old vintage tea towel and the dress itself is made from 90% used (upcycled & free) fabric.

The pattern is the Joy Mini Tea Towel Dress, you can grab it here: https://tidd.ly/41Rnvlc and yes, it's worth the money as it has the best 'sleeve pattern, insertion' that I've come across in all my sewing.

I filmed myself making it & have a major question to ask you, so please click here to see me make it & tell me what you think.

I made a 4xl top with a 5xl skirt. The pattern was super easy to follow, I was originally going to add a ruffle to the length of it but decided to leave it at this longish tunic length. If I find that I'm not wearing it because it's too short then I'll add a patchwork ruffle to make the dress longer.

I'm definitely going to make more of these as it was such a fun sew, I LOVE scrap fabric and using free fabric is even better! If you want to see how I sourced free fabric then I've got a couple of videos up on YouTube here..... so check them out for yourself.

This is what the back of the dress looks like (below) not as cute as the front but still pretty cute! I'm now off to source some more cute vintage tea towels to make lots more!

Making the cutest crossbody bag!

I just finished sewing this awesomely cute bag for myself. Do you like it?

It's the Orbit Bag from Helen's Closet and you can do it with or without the pieced quilt star front, in fact you can use no patchwork at all. You could just use a decorative fabric panel, maybe an old favourite tshirt that's been interfaced so it's sturdy. You could do any type of quilted panel for the front, maybe your favourite dresdens or you could use EPP too. It's only limited by your imagination.

There are some tips that I have for making this - the perfect hacks to make this sew easier for you, if you'd like to know what they are then just click here...... to go to see them.

I also think this would look equally good done in recycled denim from your old worn out jeans. If the quilting bit puts you off then you can either use pre-quilted fabric or just spray bast the layers together well and sew as is - also perfect for you favourite fabric patch too.

I'd love it if you popped over to my YouTube channel & subscribed to it & even liked some of my videos. Every like, every follower, every comment is like a great big hug!

Something for me.

I was packing my stuff to head up to my Mum's for the week when I realised that all my pj's were olddddd. Like really old, worn out, faded, holey and stretched out. So I decided to hunt through my fabric stash and came up with some soft cotton, chose an awesome sewing pattern (this one......) and made it.

I even filmed myself making them if you'd like to see the process, click here..... to see it.

I love wearing the top, it's so comfy and I feel pretty wearing it so I'm definitely going to make myself a bunch more as it's a great way to use up that fabric that isn't your favourite and doesn't have a particular project in mind!

The Donny Shirt

I just finished sewing myself the Donny shirt and wow, I love the style of this shirt!

Firstly, it's a super size inclusive pattern, I did extend the length of the pattern though as it's designed to sit on your hips & I wear my shirts longer.

The pattern was super easy to follow, there is a well written pattern, a tutorial and also a Youtube sewalong clip (from the designer) as well.

I actually 'cheated' and had this pattern printed out on A0 paper as I wanted to see if it would be easier than printing & taping it together. My home printer often doesn't work so I was keen to try it this way and yes, it was way easier! I ordered it online and honestly, the time delay didn't matter as it gave me a deadline to clear the table, find the fabric etc.

I'm definitely going to be making myself more of these as it is super comfy to wear, I love how it doesn't have buttons!

If you want to follow my sewing journey with this top then you can see it here on my Youtube channel. You'll have to tell me what you think of the fabric that I used. I upcycled an old vintage bed sheet as I'm trying to use what I have rather than buy & store & therefore 'hoard fabric'.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to take any more photos of the shirt yet as it's super cold here at the moment, too cold to be outside in a thin blouse!

Quilted Journal Covers

I recently made a big batch of quilted journal covers in preparation for upcoming birthdays for the year. They're super easy to make, absolutely gorgeous and honestly, I just want to keep them all for myself.

I filmed myself making them so you can be inspired and sew some yourself.
See it here: https://youtu.be/7ZX6V5uEtwU   It's my first time doing free motion quilting, so you'll have to tell me how I did, does the scribbly quilted bits look ok?

I'm thinking of making some more using selvedge edge strips as the fabric and some scrappy fabric ones too.

Do you think they'll make nice gifts? If you (or your child) were to receive one as a gift, would you be happy with it?

10 minute gift idea

Yes, you read the title correctly, sew an awesome gift for someone in 10minutes! In fact, you can cut & sew (& stuff) the entire gift in under 15 minutes! No pattern needed.

So what are you waiting for, go check out my Youtube tutorial (here: https://youtu.be/6V4mDRJ7Icw)  & see how it's done (I've even included a timer, so you can truly see how fast it takes me).

The fabric is soft, smooth & totally awesome;  it's velvet and you can get it either here....    or here.... (if in Australia).

A new toy to play with!

Forgive the slightly crappy photos but I wanted to show you what I've been working on and I honestly didn't have a chance to take good photos as Joe took them both straight away to try them on & didn't give them back as he loved them too much!

Firstly, I need to tell you that I made them entirely on an overlocker (serger) that I got for my birthday a last week. Hubby asked me what I wanted for my birthday, so I sent him a link of what I really, really wanted and wowzer, he bought me it!  Such a lovely surprise, I've been wanting one for years but after I borrowed Mum's I didn't actually want one after that as threading it was a total nightmare & made me very crabby. So later, I did some research and I totally made the right decision in choosing a machine, are you keen to know what I got? Hmm, I'm now the proud owner of this overlocker/serger, it's the easiest thing to thread ever. It's even easier to thread than my sewing machine! I totally recommend it, especially after I've now made several things on it & changed the threads a few times, that air threading button is a dream to use!

I made the first pair of trousers below (the dinosaur ones) 100% on the overlocker, including the hems on the legs, waistband & elastic. I also didn't use a pattern, that's why they're a big baggy but hey, Joe still loves them.

I then made the second pair, the top image, using a pattern (this one) and once again, just used the overlocker including the pockets, hems, elastic & waistband. I love the style of these trousers and have made them before for Joe and he's always wearing them as their super comfy. Oh & fyi, the pattern is a free one, so grab it & make them too!

I honestly, did not know that you could sew a complete item like this on the overlocker, I always thought that you had to use your sewing machine as well to make them in conjuction with the overlocker. So now I'm keen to find out what else I can do with the overlocker! If you have any suggestions, then please let me know in the comments what other projects I should make!

Sewing beanies

I'm currently in between major knitting projects and I hate being idle, so I decided to start knitting beanies for charity.
I asked my Mum for her beanie knitting pattern and memorized it after the first time I knit one. I'm using up my stash, so the beanies are all different, wool, acrylic, wool blends.
I then thought that I needed pompoms, I was going to buy some and shuddered at the price, so I decided to make some. They're actually easy to make, let me know if you want me to do a tutorial on making them.

I then decided to sew some beanies as my favourite 'go to' beanie that I wear is actually fabric, not knitted. I used this easy sewing pattern...  and gosh, it's possibly the easiest thing that I have ever sewn. Can you guess how long it took to sew one?  If you want to find out how long it takes to sew one, then click here... to see the clip I filmed.
These beanies have been donated to my local public hospital, to the cancer treatment ward, to help keep patients warm as it's super chilly cold here as it's mid-winter.
I'm going to keep knitting & sewing beanies because I can't choose what to knit but I'm narrowing it down ... it's just the cost of yarn that is truly stopping me.

What do you do in-between projects when you need something to keep your fingers busy not idle at night time?

The Bowen Dress

My recent make is for me and yes, it has pockets!  I haven't sewn myself a dress in years, so when I saw an awesome woven dress in a magazine, I just knew I had to sew it.

I made a few mods to the pattern/garment and of course, even though I read the instructions, I still kind of sewed it my way not sticking to the designer's directions.

I filmed a Youtube clip of me making it, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv96JbzuySg   if you want to see how I made this. I also did a little clip at the end of me wearing it, if you're wanting to see the fabric/drape/fit.  I'd love for you to tell me how it looks as I was loving the dress until hubby said it looks like a tent. My kids have reassured me that it's not the case and that I look awesome but still that 'tent' remark is still there in my brain. Sigh.

Anyway, enough of tents, the mods I made to the garment were as follows:

~ I used what I had for the skirt & sleeves pieces, so they are smaller than directed so there are no 'ruffles' to the sleeves.

~ I didn't want the open back/front & buttons, so I seamed that piece together.

~ I added a fake button tab to the sleeves.

Mods for next time I make this dress:

~ I'll size the bodice down another two or three sizes as it just keeps sliding off my shoulders, it's just too wide.

~ I'd change the skirt so it had two or three tiers so it was less 'tent like'.

~ I'd change the pockets so they were higher up (maybe come up 3cm) and have the shape so it hangs from the waist line (on the inside of the skirt)

~ I really like how I did the sleeves but I'd make them a bit shorter.

Do you have plans to make this dress too?  If I plan to make the dress again with the above mods then I think I'd use this striking bold fabric or this statement fabric.

I'd totally appreciate your support if you popped over to my YouTube channel & possibly subscribe to my channel or even liked some of my videos.

The Bribe Dress

A young girl holding her hands up as she celebrates getting her vax wearing a new dress with a burgandy bodice and tie dye skirt.

I'm totally guilty of bribing my child. Yep, sometimes you just need too. This was done because she needed to have her second covid vax and when she went for the first, she deliberately wore a long fitted sleeve dress that was really hard to take remove when she needed her shot. So this dress was made & given to her just before we jumped into the car to go to the clinic.

We also bribed her with 3 lollipops and a promise of hot chips on the wharf for dinner afterwards.

It worked. She is now fully vaccinated. She walked into the clinic a scared little mouse and walked out a queen as she was so proud of herself for actually getting the vax!

Pattern: I used this bodice pattern as it's a good fit and easy to sew. I've sewn this bodice/dress a few times now as it's quick to make and my daughter wears the dresses over & over again. I just kind of made up the skirt as I went along, I didn't hem it as it's knit fabric & didn't need to be. Fabric is just stuff from my stash.

Big Butt Undies

I just finished sewing something for me, a stack of undies.

I call then Big Butt Undies because I like the coverage but the pattern that I use has many variations to suit your own needs. I also like that pattern because it uses smaller pattern pieces, in fact that watermelon pair was actually a fat quarter.

I was going to make a YouTube tutorial for them using both a sewing machine and also a serger/overlocker. What do you think, is that something that would appeal to you? I promise, they are super easy to make and much, much cheaper than buying a pair. I even tried to turn one into 'period undies' and it worked out fine too!

What are these?

Something a little different today, can you guess what these (above) are?

I hadn't made them before today, this was my first time sewing them. They looked harder to sew than they were.

They are the best ever scraps stash busting thing ever, one piece of the pattern was super small, perfect for those itty bitty scraps.

Yes, I used knit/stretch fabric, it's a 95/5 blend for extra stretch & recovery.

The picture looks like I made 4 things but in fact I made 2.

I made 2 pairs. ...worked it out yet?

My kids were super excited to try them on, they've now asked for more in every colour available. My son says they are more comfortable than shop bought ones. My daughter asked for ones with pompoms.

The pattern is this one. Go grab it and use your scraps.

Aren't they the cutest things ever!  These were the first test ones, so I just used the first scraps I came too. The heels & toes were optional, I really liked the heels as they turn a 'tube sock' into a 'proper sock't that doesn't slip off the foot easily. The cuffs were also optional, I liked the pop of colour at the top.

They come in heaps of sizes, lengths and options, they even come in tights and adult sizes

The pattern was well written with heaps of instructions, making them easy to sew.

Now that I've mastered these, I'm tempted to make more and to also make these ones because I know my son would just love them and he's getting harder to buy & make for as he gets older (he turns 11 soon).

The Rainbow Swing Dress

This dress was so easy to make, a great stash buster. I sewed it up for Delaney's birthday, so I had to wait before I could get a photo of her in it!

The sewing pattern is this one: https://lddy.no/10n66

My fabric (from my stash) wasn't quite wide enough, so I fudged the shape whilst cutting and there wasn't enough stretch in the fabric for the neckband, so after sewing it 90% on, I ripped it out & just folded the neckline down instead and it still managed to look good when I'd finished it!

You can see how I sewed the dress here: https://youtu.be/Xp16vZxHOCE

If you need ideas on where to source knit/stretchy fabric from then head over here to see the list I've compiled: http://www.craftyrie.com/2017/09/where-to-buy-knit-jersey-stretch-fabric.html

Here's what the dress looks like on, not the best photos but she was so excited and wouldn't stand still. She also was amazed that I'd actually sewn the dress not bought it, so that was kind of heart warming, especially when she told me it was so pretty and kept spinning circles in it!

A Boxy Pouch

Boxy Pouch sewn with scrap fabrics

I recently sewed this pouch using scrap fabrics for the cute external zipper pocket and just random greys for the outer fabric.

Front zipper view of boxy pouch with tag showing

We won't mention how I put the label on upside down, nope, we'll ignore that.

I'm not sure what I'll use it for, maybe I'll give it to my son as he was wanting a new project bag for his crochet.

I used the pattern from this book or this book in Australia, I also reviewed the pattern book in this YouTube video, have you seen it yet?  How was the review? I'm working on improving my channel, so stick with me as I grow more confident there!

Sewing Kids Leggings on a Sewing Machine

I recently made these leggings for Delaney. I sewed them on the sewing machine, no overlocker (serger) needed. I also don't cut measure or cut the elastic before sewing as I find it easier not too.

If you want to see me making these leggings then check out how I do it in this YouTube clip. I really love making these as you only need one pattern piece. Yes, you read correctly, you one need ONE pattern piece!

Have you subscribed to my YouTube channel yet? I'd really appreciate a follow or a thumbs up over there!

The best sewing tips

The best binding tip that I've come across for joining your binding seams on a quilt is with this. It just blew my mind at how simple it was and it's now my favourite way to bind a quilt or placemats (like in the above photo).

I love quilt as you go (QAYG) and there are lots of classes on it, my favourite one to learn how to actually do QAYG are this one as I love the projects. I also liked this class as it showed me very practical tips but my absolute favourite lesson to teach you how to join your QAYG pieces is this one. Yes, it's not an actual qayg class but the very last lesson in that class she joined the blocks so simply that I just had to share it with you! I also like this single finishing strip technique as well.

I also love scrap fabric projects, so when I watched this class, ohmygosh, it was life changing! Not only was it scrap fabric but QAYG too!

Also, I need to recommend this class. Piecing has always kinda of scared me away but this teaches piecing AND improv pieceing. The session on improv piecing just ticked all the right boxes in my brain and I've actually been giving it a go!  If I was to buy a class to keep, it would certainly be this one.

I also really enjoyed this class, the instructor, Joe, has done all the math for you, so you just need to choose fabrics, cut, sew & find a layout that you like best. He also shows you what to do if your sewn layout is looking a little wrong aka crazy! I really liked that he showed the process of making a quilt rather than showing you how to make something that just fits a particular design. I've actually watched the class a few times now as he has a lovely teaching style and is quite funny!

Now, this lesson had tips in it for not only sorting your stash BUT the most excellent tip for working with fabric that my brain just dinged at! Yes! I ran off to the cupboard and starting using her technique! I've actually rewatched this several times now as all the lessons are really inspiring and so easy!

If you're cupboard is overflowing with too many precuts (like me!) then this class is perfect for you as it uses a jelly roll to make the easiest Dresden quilt and charm squares to make the cutest circle quilt (like life savers/donuts).

Sewing with knit fabric (stretchy fabric) is kind of tricky and I've been trying to master it for a few years. Now, I can sew stretch fabrics but I'm never happy with the finished projects as I don't like my seams ....until I completed this online class and baboom, everything clicked and I can just use my sewing machine & don't actually need to purchase special machine (like a coverstitch) to get that nice finish.

If necklines scare you when sewing t-shirts, then this class has some inspiring necklines that are easy!

Now, this class had lots of tips but what really blew my mind was a simple one-liner tip that she gave in regards to using a stitch on my sewing machine that I've always tried to use & never been successful with, after hearing her tip, I actually feel now more confident in my sewing! There were also so excellent elastic sewing tips too for all types of elastic.

Ok, wow that's a lot of tips and I hope they help you as much as they helped me. Also, thanks for reading this far, whilst I've got you here, can you do me a favour and let me know in the comments below what platform you use to read my blog? Sewing fat quarter cushions

I've been sewing lots of cushions lately as they make great gifts and are fantastic stash busters too.

I use two fat quarters, a zip and of course, a cushion insert

It's a great way to use all those pretty fat quarters in your stash that have been sitting there because you never wanted to cut them up!

How do I make them? Well, you could check out my YouTube video on how I make them or for notes on how I do it then keep on reading below:

Choose two co-coordinating fat quarters, a pretty coloured zip that is either the same length or longer (& you trim it down to size) and a cushion insert. Yep, that's all you need!

First, sew the zip onto the first fat quarter, then line up the second fat quarter and sew the zip onto it.

I then go back and sew a zigzag along the edge to neaten the edges.

Open the zipper up partway, then line up (& pin if necessary) the three remaining sides and sew. Then go back and do a zigzag stitch to neaten the edges & prevent fraying.  Trim any excesss loose threads.

Turn the cushion inside out & insert the cushion insert & close the zipper.

Done! One very quick, fun fat quarter cushion!
