According to none other than myself, Neurosis has three distinct era: the hardcore of the 1st two albums and EP, the experimental anger with lots of doom and noises of the 90s, and after that the sad and melancholic waves of sweet long stuff. I will eternally be a fan of the hardcore era, from the straight forward classic punk thrash of Pain of Mind to the more Blast-like sound of Word As Law. For something completely different, the following anger/doom albums are amazing too - the high point being the evil monster Through Silver In Blood. Then I started to get bored with the sad stuff. It is musically excellent, but they can't sing and it ruins it for me. You need actual singers to perform on this kind of musical landscapes, not depressed lumberjacks who lost their axes and saws in the pond where suicidal angels come to drown. According to Church Of Zer standards, you are allowed to use a death metal growler on your sad music if he has the class of the guys in Temple Of Void or Esoteric, or else Peter Steele. But not his post-bar fight whining. Too bad because most of this stuff could match the Sonic Mass from Amebix, but it does not because the Baron sings beautifully, lui. That's why my favorite of this era is the awesome album featuring  Jarboe, who sings like an angel about to dive in thick black waters without a snorkel. This album rules! Then there was that tedious, bore fest of a show I attended a few years ago, which did nothing to revive the passion. Neurosis ruled, and they probably still do, let me know if the last album is worth a try for non-insomniacs.

!ZER Neurosis ZER!

MRR readers should read this. Glad I stopped buying that crap zine in 1987, surprised it still exists  - yeah, now on the capitalist interwebs with their own capitalist website!

Reactivated last year! Here comes a section of the Swans' very large output. From very heavy industrial machinery to the ballads that would fit an Irish film about a dead mother in 1927, Swans built a sonic legend for the true zerist when he needs less metal and more reptile poetry. The early stuff is the potent infection germ of the drone doom that would make us bleed in the 90s. Also, the 80s metalhead is informed that Ted Parsons from Prong is the drummer on the 86/87 recordings, rezer.
The new album is classic Swans of the most elaborate dimension with some of their best material to date, the wait is well rewarded. Mesmerizing dark light! Masterpiece!
Magnificent satellite: the amazing Neurosis & Jarboe album.

Extreme Noise Terror

Extreme Noise Terror / Chaos UK - Earslaughter, 1986
A Holocaust in Your Head, 1989
Peel Sessions, 1987/1990 Sessions 1 & 3
Grind Madness at the BBC, 1987/1990 The 3 Peel Sessions remastered
Discharged: From Home Front to War Front, 1991
Discharged, 1992
Phonophobia, 1992
Retro-bution, 1995
Damage 381, 1997
Being and Nothing, 2001
Extreme Noise Terror / Driller Killer, 2007
Law of Retaliation, 2009
Phil Vane, singer of E.N.T., passed away last month at 46. We will continue to enjoy his torture vocals though the immense legacy of Extreme Noise Terror, masters of all things crust, grind and death. I initially bought the Earslaughter split as a Chaos UK fan, but once I had heard the E.N.T. side, I had a much broader, drooling smile. E.N.T. brought the early crust thrash sound of Discharge | Terveet Kädet | Rattus | Mob 47 | Ratos De Porao to new levels of abrasion and speed. The Peel Sessions (with Mick Harris of Napalm Death on drums) and Phonophobia are landmark crustgrindcore monsters!! Their insane aggression is the Rolls Royce of the genre, and they even excelled at death metal with the amazing Damage 381 (with Barney from Napalm Death on vocals) and the head crushing Being And Nothing - one pulverizing exercise in super fast death metal. The Law Of retaliation combines both styles, with an emphasis on thrashing crust mania. ACH! Neurosis - short wave warfare

Neurosis - short wave warfare, USA 1990
Very good live recording from the first two albums tour, when they were more hardcore sounding. Very zer. I didn't know it had been officially released. This is the vinyl rip without the 3 added tracks from the official CD.
