Uses about 90 yds
of 4 ply worsted weight (#4) yarn - any color (or combo of colors)
Size H (5 mm)
Size of mittens using H (5mm) hook = 5" tall from top of wrist and 3.75" across width
Gauge: 6 hdc
= 2" 5 rows = 2"
Begin with
CUFF using H hook:
Chain 13. (16 for larger size)
Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in 2nd
chain from the hook. Sc in remaining chs
across. Ch 1, turn
(total of 12 sts) (15 sts)
Rows
2-18: Sc
in
each sc (back loop only) to end of row; ch 1 turn.
Repeat to row 18 (22) maintaining 12 (15) sc
across.
(Joining) Fold cuff in half bringing
beginning row to ending row and line up
sc
stitches to first row of cuff. Slip Stitch (ss)
corresponding
stitches together to form the cuff. Turn so seam is on the
inside. You
are now working on the outside of mitten.
(change colors here if you wish)
BODY OF MITTEN: (You might want to place a stitch marker
or piece of yarn, on the first stitch of the round, to keep track).
Rnd1: Make first sc of
the mitten's body at the top of where you just joined
the cuff.
Then continue to sc around the top of the cuff till
you have
22 (24) more, (so 23) evenly spaced sc's. (25
sts
total around cuff for larger size)
Rnds
2:
Hdc in each sc around. Join with a sl st in top of 1 stitch from row below, ch 2.
Rnd 3: Hdc in base of the ch 2, and in 22 (24) more hdcs. Join with sl st. Ch 2
Rnd 4:
Hdc in base of the ch 2 and in the next stitch. Ch 2, skip 2 hdcs,
(this forms a thumb hole) hdc in each of the rest of the sts around.
Join, Ch2.
Rnds 5 Hdc
in base of the ch 2 and in the next stitch, make 2 hdc in the ch2 from
the last round. Hdc in each remaining stitch. Join. Ch 2. (You should now have 23
sts (25) again)
Rnds 6 -11 (13): Hdc in base of the ch 2, and in 22 (24) more hdcs. Join with sl st. Ch 2.
DECREASE ROUNDS
Rnd 12 and 13 (15): hdc in base of the ch 2, *hdc 2 sts together. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st, ch 2. At end of round 13 (15) end off, cut yarn about 5" long and thread onto a yarn needle. Weave yarn through the sts of
last
row, pull tight to close up end of mitten, weave yarn back and forth to secure closing
and
fasten off.
THUMB
Rnd 1:
Join yarn in any st in that thumb hole. Ch 1
and 1 sc in the first sc of thumb opening, 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts in the hole. You will be working on 10 scs now.
Do 7 (8) rounds of scs without joining.
Rnds 8,9 (9, 10) (dec
rows): sc 2 sts together around.
Cut yarn leaving about a 5" tail,
pull yarn through last ch 1. Stitch opening shut, weave yarn tail
inside thumb, back and forth for several stitches and fasten
off.
Make a 2nd mitten the same way!
