Beauty and Personality journal panel for Andy Skinner

I am sharing this project over on Andy Skinner's blog as his Creative Team sample for February.
It will go into my 'Creative Panels' journal.

Creative steps
Using Andy's chalk paints Ocean Breeze, Mustard Seed and Olive Grove with DecoArt Americana Timeless and Lace chalky finish paint, brayer a random background.

I dipped and dried in white watery gesso and then dipped and dried in Ocean Breeze and Prussian Blue pigment paint.

Next I stamped Distressed Mandala in coffee and cobalt archival ink before scraping some white gesso and left it to dry overnight.

I did a couple of more washes using the ocean breeze mixed with a little prussian blue and the olive grove this brought it all back together again. Roughening the edges and dipping them in watery chestnut frames the panel nicely.

To finish I stamped Andy's new eye stamp with both coffee and black archival inks to give some variation,

I printed the quote and painted three hearts with chestnut chalk paint, stamped with lace and washed with burnt sienna and titan buff.

February is the month of love so I hope you find it in abundance.

Inspired by Kate Crane

It was an amazing couple of days at Stitches in Birmingham a few weeks ago and this year I was able to spend a bit of time with the lovely Kate Crane, she was demoing on the Country Love Crafts stand for DecoArt and also did a workshop on the Tuesday that I helped out with - intending to do some of the tag she was teaching too. Unfortunately I didn't get much finished but Kate is like me and produces teaching notes so I was able to have a play when I got home.

This is where I got to and what happened next -

Yes I know the colours Kate chose are beautiful but I wanted to be inspired by her and not coy her completely. So I adapted mine in terms of colour and mark making. I changed to pyrrole red and added burnt umber to it to make my own deeper, grungier tone.
Text that had been glued to the original tag was disappearing fast so I added some stamping and all the layers Kate had written down. to get this -

I used one stencil the same and one that was different. and also added small talk stickers.

I used different stamps and doodled in my own way.

But eventually I ended up with something very similar but not an exact copy.

Mine's on the left and Kates is on the right. You can see how the colours are more muted but still very bright for me.

Have a lovely weekend whatever you've got planned or even with what you've not got planned, I have to say I'm looking forward to mine.

Take care.

Visual Journal #4

Do you ever go onto Pinterest and suddenly realise you are looking at similar things that aren't necessarily what you would normally look at? Whilst looking at journal pages earlier this week I realised I was looking at quite a number that had circles in them. I know they are popular, but it's not a shape I have used much, and if I have it's just to print circles from little plastic pots over a journaling page. As they had caught my attention I wanted to have a play.

I started by gessoing the next two pages in my altered book, adhered some music score paper on the two pages and gessoed over the top of those. Love the textures it created as well as the interest for creating on.

I got out my box of journalling bits, found the plastic lids I have collected etc and using black gesso printed some circles in two sizes.
I decided to use distress paints to colour them in as I wanted to see how they looked layered up with colour knowing that dried distress paint is permanent on the page.

The colours I used are salty ocean, evergreen bough, mustard seed and festive berries. Wow is summer here with these colours?

The next step was to repeat the process using smaller circles and adding more colours to all of them. Did I tell you I was finger painting rather than using a brush. I was having such a great time - it took me back to being a teacher, when I was in the classroom.

For this part of the process I added some vintage photo distress paint and some white gesso. (Really I suppose I should have got the picket fence distress paint out, but the gesso was already sitting on my desk. I was also texturising the circles at this point dabbing my finger instead of rubbing and adding water to get more translucent colours.

Next I added the background using victorian velvet and tea dye distress stains. With a brush and using a baby wipe I blended them around the circles.

At this point looking at the pages I realised the circle forms were all too neat and perfectly formed, how to change them?  Get out your black pen and draw parts of circles round the lids you used. Works for me.

Then some very small text either in or across the circles, some tiny little black circles and some fine ink splatters. Some of the tiny circles that were not connected to the larger ones looked odd to me so I gently dabbed them with the gesso, dried and dabbed some of the distress inks over them, now they appear to be more in the background
At this point although the pages were almost dry they were beginning to warp quite a bit so I put them under a heavy box for a while.

Some walnut stained edges and chit chat stickers saying
'Laugh forever and share a smile with friends' on the first page ....

... and some 'real' jouraling using a pen and handwriting -
'Using my journal is about developing my ideas - showing my thought processes and providing insights into my thinking without feeling constrained by others' expectations'.

To get a more aged look to the pages I added a coat of glue and seal with some vintage photo distress ink mixed in (see Tim's tag for January). One thing I learned is that if I am going to seal the pages I need to make sure my writing pen ink is WATERPROOF - but as Tim says 'embrace your imperfections', after all not only is this a visual journey it is a learning journey as well.

If you would like to join the party please take a look at my original post HERE and then follow the link below to get the script to add to your blog post. Maybe you might like to make some circles.

This is not a challenge it is just for fun but it's a great way to see what others are making in their journals around the world whether it be an art journal, visual diary or sketchbook and whatever medium or style you choose.
An art diary, art journal or visual journal is a daily journal kept by artists, often containing both words and sketches, and occasionally including mixed media elements such as collages. (Wikipedia) Dina Wakely says 'Simply put, an art journal is a journal in which you combine art and words to express yourself. That’s it. It’s not complex, and there really aren't any rules for art journaling. It’s all about self-expression. Art journaling has a long-standing artistic tradition. Artists through the centuries have kept notebooks in which they sketched, practiced, experimented, and recorded themselves. Picasso and DaVinci were two other prolific sketchbook keepers. You are in good company!

Enjoy.

Turtle Treasures–Crafty Individuals

Many of my friends know that I had 16 amazing days touring three of the Hawaiian islands recently with my husband Ken and two American friends, Joni and Leo (who was born on Oahu). We saw many beautiful places, stunning scenery and amazing natural and wildlife including six turtles resting on a beach.

When I got home I found all the new releases from Crafty Individuals, four fabulous stamps including this one of a turtle (CI-413) and although I had lots to catch up on I just couldn’t stop myself creating a journalling/scrapbook page.

P1170031
I began with water colour paper and used dylusions inks and some stencils to create the background using the blues I had seen in the Hawaiian seas, then I stamped this fabulous creature off the edge twice. Using the faux bleach technique I used my water brush and removed lots of the colours from the images and re-painted them with vintage photo and black soot distress inks.
Untitled-3
I made masks for the two turtles, covered them up and splashed watered-down white acrylic paint to give more of a watery effect and dried it off. Next came one of my photos of a tired turtle on the beach, framing him in Photoshop Elements and using another CI stamp set (CI 272) to stamp and cut out the starfish for some little embellishing. The quote was computer generated.

Happy Memories…..

I hope your week is going well.

Take care.

Crafts-Too Summer Days 4

The fourth (but not final) week for the challenge at Crafts-too Challenge You where the theme is summer days with beach colours. I rarely use my lovely Dyan Reaveley creative journal so I decided to have fun creating a page for it. However I ended up not being happy with it and going for a smaller journal. You can see I am still in summer mode and I think Mr Mojo must be on his way home now.
P1130859
This second piece I worked on used Dylusions sprays – pure sunshine, lemon zest, squeezed orange, white linen and Perfect Pearls mists – Cappuccino and Blue Patina.
P1130735
The same colours were used with masks …….
P1130737
…… then I stamped with coffee and blue cobalt archival ink.
P1130738
I just love how the white linen picks up the other colours it lays on top of.
P1130860
The flowers are from a Tim Holtz die and the spray of ivy is from a Marianne frame die, cut into pieces.
P1130861
I used other Tim Holtz dies for the birdcage and for the lettering.
P1130862
My yellow and blue colours are representative of the sand and sea.

Nature at PanPastel UK

Here is my DT sample for the PanPastel UK challenge this week.

The background was made by covering the tag with text paper, tearing some of it off when dry, then adhering scrumpled peach coloured tissue paper over the top.

I set about applying PanPastels in a variety of ways through masks, with and without embossing ink for it to stick to, stamping with the ink and applying the colour with a sofft tool and just shading areas using a sponge.

I used pens and paints to highlight and add dimension.

I stamped the ink blots with archival ink

I splattered watered white acrylic paint and used a white pen to highlight areas.
I also shaded the ducks in with pans too.

This was alot of fun. I hope you will share your nature projects with us this week and who knows you might be the lucky recipient of a set of pans if you win, courtesy of 'Your Creativity Store'.

Have fun experimenting and playing this week.

British Bulldog - Crafty Individuals

I am just so enthralled with the gelli prints and new Alice Palace stamps from CI. This card takes another Alice Palace image called British Bulldog and like the previous one I have made the card, journal style (well that's what I call it lol) and added some stamping and masking over the mono print.

A crown and some wings for the bulldog add to the texture and dimension as does the stamped and cut out bunting.

After I had stamped with some bubble wrap I added extra white paint, white pen and black pen doodling round the circles. Again the old credit card came out to paint straight lines in places.

The double layered mono print is very rich in colour and depth, but the additional stamping and masking created different effects yet again.

Here you can see where I have added treasure gold to the metal crown, the image and wings.

Hope you are having a crafty week.

Anything Goes at PanPastel UK

Hi Bloggers, it's  the first Sunday of 2013 so welcome to the first PanPastel challenge of the year and for your pleasure it is an 'anything goes' theme which always goes down well.

Those who follow me know that I have been experimenting more with the journalling style lately and I have also been using prints I made after Christmas with my new gelli plate. This is another of those and I have added PPs over the top to create more dimension using masks and also used PPs over some gesso layered through a mask. I used the white gesso to stamp the circles as well.

The stamp is from Crafty Individuals and called Party Puffin, isn't he just fabulous? I am making this into a cover for a new diary.

I hope you will join us again this year, there are lots of fabulous challenges in the pipe-line and there is a trial set of the pans for the winner supplied by our fabulous sponsor Berni at Your Creativity Store.

We are welcoming two new members to the team Tracie from the UK and Terry from the Netherlands, I am sure you are gonna love their work so please pop over and say hello.

Hope your week 1 went well and that you are finding lots of crafty time.

Take care and have fun.
