Seedheads Panel -

Poppy Seedhead with collage

I found a small wooden panel and decided to use chalk paints for the background and include the lovely Alison Bomber's stamps. Her love of nature and using plants and seedhead images reflects my own, so I totally resonate with her projects and ideas. So poppy seedheads it is!

Process steps
Paint a layer of london brick mixed with white and lace to tone the colour down a bit (I love mixing my own colours) and dry.
Rub some candle wax over the surface then paint with primitive, dry, rub and sand down to create some distressing.
Rub candle wax more heavily in chosen areas and paint a layer of lace and dry. Again rub and sand down.
Repeat last layer with snowflake sanding edges well to expose the wood.
Blend the edges and surface with walnut stain DO, splatter with water and pull droplets off with kitchen roll, repeat until happy with the effects.
Rub white areas with a damp cloth to lift DO and bring some brightness back to the panel.
Stamp Tim Holtz text onto surface using permanent black ink and heat dry.
Also using Tim's stamp add texture (circles) with embossing ink and use white embossing powder to create this layer.
Stamp and cut round poppies and grass. (I extended the stems of them to help make these fit to the panel size).
I started to design the panel and gather all the bits together and to achieve the look I wanted I did some mass stamping of ephemera and numbers. I'll make my next post about this and show what I used. (See also supplies listed below).

As it's February and very near Valentine's Day I added some hearts.

The completed panel

Winging It 2 for Country View Crafts

Create a piece of home decor for a shabby display.

This is my second inspirational project for the 'winging it' challenge on the Country View Crafts facebook page. It was inspired by looking at home decor projects on Pinterest.

Die cut two wings from the 3D Impresslits 'Winged' embossing folder.

Create a small puddle of watery white acrylic paint and brush over each wing. Heat dry for about 15 seconds and then use kitchen paper dipped into hand gel to rub the paint away from the raised surface.

Take a block of wood, give it a coat of gesso, dry and then a coat of white acrylic paint and dry.

Using gold embossing powder and stamps create simple designs on all four sides of the block.

Sand the edges and rub the exposed areas with a dark brown distress ink. Paint a bbq stick with gold paint and drill a hole in the cube to take it and glue it in.

Cut the snowflake strip and make up ready to add to the top, also give it a light wash with watery gesso. Punch a hole through the middle and in the extra star. Add these to the cube.

Glue the wings together leaving the central space open to use hot glue to adhere it to the stick and two small stars back to back at the top.

Stamp the label, cut and ink the edges, everything is now ready for the final assembly.

Be Inspired

Embossed panel collage - Be Inspired

A new collage for my 'Mixed Media Collages' art book. I love combining papers and other elements to create what I feel is an interesting and balanced work of art.

The layers on this collage include texture created with an embossing folder,

a heat embossed pattern mounted onto grey card,

ephemera pieces, a printed royal mail frank from an envelope, royalty free images from the internet,

punched and diecut pieces, washi tape

and stamped images.

Let's use more words

So today's project is using words again for the challenge at Country View Crafts and Challenges FaceBook page which lasts the whole of January.

Hello Winter

I decided to use the same stamp as I did on my first project but use it in a completely different way, this time it was stamped onto vellum paper.

I used a background that I had made for a frame that was my project for a workshop at CVC before Christmas

plus a photobooth vintage photo, 'Hello Winter' from a set by Creative Expressions and a small flower.

I die-cut foliage, some of which I wanted white and the other pieces were cut from an inked background, coloured randomly with watercolour pencils, washed over and when dry sponged lightly with white gesso to create a wintry effect.

I chose to use the card frame from an Ikea small box frame and later added embossed card to it.

Having cut the strips, I covered the frame and gave it a coat of gesso to fill in the cracks where the strips were glued down.

Once the background and frame were added to the box I adhered all the other elements to finish it off.
I put the foliage together ....

.....and I am really in love with the extra grungy Eucalyptus leaves .....

..... the flower gained an addition, a shabbied medallion inspired by Stacy Hutchinson .....

..... and don't forget the photobooth photograph by Tim Holtz.

Thank you for stopping by.

Vintage shabby emboss resist - New Technique

I'm using some of the Andy Skinner new release stamps today - Mandal and Pebble Beach to create this emboss resist background.

I started by scraping some gesso thinly over my card and when it was dry I added some London Brick chalk paint rubbed it around, spritzed it with water and dried it.

I stamped the mandala and pebble beach stamps with embossing ink, covered it with the embossing powder and heat set it . When the card was cool  I squeezed over a little white chalk paint and  again spritzed with water and rubbed it around then took my heat gun and gently wafted it over the surface not getting too close. I let it cool and repeated heating until it was almost dry, then took a wet wipe and gently rubbed over the surface to reveal this gorgeous shabby design

I wouldn't recommend stamping over the surface, it was a nightmare and I had to use both black and white posca pens to touch it up!!! ;o))
