Ageless Style - "Outfit Challenged"

The Ageless Style Link Up-  The first Monday of every month a group of over forty fashion bloggers pick a monthly theme and show different ways of styling it.

Hello!  Long time no see.  I am not back to a regular blogging schedule but I want to remain faithful to my blogging commitments so I will still participate in the Ageless Style Link Up once a month as long as they have it.  But before I begin the link up post I wanted to give everyone a little update on me and my family during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

First of all, we are all healthy.  Everyone is still employed, although my husband
was told he can't work over-time anymore.  He always worked sixty hours a week our entire marriage, and now he is working a normal forty hours a week.  It's nice to have him home more, but the loss of money from over time will hurt.   We're also not sure how much longer he will even have a job, if this quarantine goes on much longer.  That is scary, but I'm grateful he is still working for now as I know so many Americans are not.  All we can do is take one day at a time for now so we don't fall into complete panic mode.

My children and grandchildren moved in with us the day before the "15 Days To Slow The Spread".  It's been wonderful having them with us for the grandchildren have been a wonderful distraction for me.  I would be going out of my mind with worry if they weren't here with me.  Jason, my son-in-law is a private school teacher and has created an office for himself in our basement and is teaching his students on-line.  Ashley is a private voice teacher and has been teaching her students via the internet as well.  My other son Jordan is still in Illinois and still working full time.  Although he is very lonely, we all agree he should stay there while he still has a job.  But if he loses his job, he will move back home as well.

I know everyone is hopeful that this will end soon and life will return to normal, and I hope so too.  But, I really think there is a more sinister plot behind all of this, and life will probably never be the same again.  I won't get into all my "conspiracy theories" here as I'm sure many of you are aware of all of them already, but in preparation for the worst, we have been super busy planning and building a vegetable garden.  I've always had a massive flower gardens, but other than tomatoes and cucumbers, I never had a vegetable garden.  All the extra work of the normal spring garden chores, plus the new vegetable garden, and having more mouths to feed, has left me little time for blogging.  I still plan on doing an Easter post, because no matter what, I'm dressing up in my new Easter dress from TJMaxx (that I purchased before this whole nightmare began), and having church with my family in our living room celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ!  I feel like the "Who's" in "Whoville" in "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas".  No matter what the world "stole" from me, I'm still going to sing "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today" on Easter Sunday and I hope you do too!

Now, on to the Ageless Style Link Up shall we?  The theme this month is "Outfit Challenged".  Shugunna challenged us to style an item in our closet that "we liked when we saw it, brought it home, but then never or rarely worn it".  I immediately thought of this Ivanka Trump dress that I purchased from Ross two years ago and never wore.  I purchased it for my trip to Savannah but never ended up wearing it because I thought it was too uncomfortable to wear walking around Savannah streets all day.  It hung in my closet then unused because I always felt it was too "dressy" to wear anywhere, including church.  I thought "Maybe I'll wear it to a wedding someday", but I always ended up wearing something else.  So, when Shugunna challenged us to style our rarely worn items, I decided now was a good time to wear this dress to church but to try and style it "more casually" so I didn't feel so "dressed up" in it.

To tone down the formality of the dress to make it a little more suitable for our "casual attire" church, I simply added a lightweight long blue cardigan from Stitch Fix.    It was also a great way to extend the wear of the dress into other seasons, as it is a sleeveless dress meant for warmer temperatures.

The weight of the cardigan is perfect for these cooler spring temperatures adding just the right of warmth.

I accessorized with a taupe clutch (also from Stitch Fix) and simple, elegant pearl jewelry.  I kept the jewelry understated to tone down the fanciness of the dress.

For shoes, I thought it was finally time to show my toes as all the snow melted.  I picked these open toed pumps from my closet.

Because it was a cool, windy day the day we took these pictures, I did keep the cardigan on all day.  But I also wanted to show you a few pictures of this dress without the cardigan.

Like most Ivanka Trump dresses, it is a very figure flattering dress but also modest.  I just love Ivanka  Trump's style and I'm in constant awe of how amazing she always looks.

Cozy Holiday Fashion

In last weeks Monday's "Grandma & Me" post , I showed a beautiful red holiday dress to wear to church or a more formal Christmas gathering.  This week I'm sharing a more cozy, casual Christmas outfit.  It might be hard to see in some of the pictures, but the pants are actually holiday dress pants I purchased years ago from JCPenney.  They have a beautiful metallic gold thread woven through the pants and are very shimmery in real life.

I accentuated the holiday look by adding a new fur jacket (also from JCPenney) and carrying a metallic gold purse.

My coat was a Black Friday deal.  I was Christmas shopping for my family and I saw this jacket at an unbelievable low price of $14.99 (originally $44.00) and I had to have it.  I liked that it was a thin jacket for a fur because it wouldn't add any extra bulk to my frame.  And even though it was thin, let me tell you, it was WARM.  I wore it to church on a 33 degree day, and I was sweltering.

I paired the jacket with a grey turtleneck and tall black slouchy boots.

I purchased my boots this past fall at Ross.  And if you look closely, you can see the gold metallic thread in the pants.  They are so pretty in real life!

For jewelry, I chose gold drop earrings (Stitch Fix) and a gold pendant necklace (old).

The fur coat is still available, and although it is on sale, it is not at the great Black Friday price I paid for it.  It comes in several different colors and you can find it HERE!

Grandma & Me: My Two Favorite Presents Under The Christmas Tree

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I had a wonderful week having all my children and grandchildren home.  We spent most of the week indoors as we had several winter storms move through the area but we did get out once to see a local park's Christmas Light show.  Alethea loved it!  I never saw her so happy.  But I wasn't sure what she enjoyed more:  the fresh fallen snow or the Christmas lights.

We took some time during the week to take our Christmas photos.  Since I now have an all-white-living room, I can decorate my tree any color I like instead of trying to match the colors in the room.  I love that!  I was going to do a red and white tree, but I didn't have any really bright red ornaments (I will be purchasing some AFTER Christmas!) so I went with white, cream, and soft gold.  You will see more pictures of my homes Christmas decorations in a later post.

And here are my two favorite presents under the Christmas Tree, my grand babies!  I would rather see these two under my tree than any other present in the world.

Alethea is now two years, five months and Atticus is five months.

Alethea is still my spunky, sweet, full of life grand daughter.  She was so excited to come to my house.  She hadn't been here for over a year (we always went to their home)  so she didn't remember it.  She had so much fun exploring all the different levels and rooms of such a large home.  She lives in a small apartment in the city, so it was quite the novelty for her.

Atticus is such a sweet baby.  All you have to do is look at him and say one word and he bursts into a huge smile.  He has such a sweet spirit.

I felt super blessed to have my beautiful grand babies home with me for a full week.  My birthday ended up on Thanksgiving Day so we threw a little Birthday Party for me.  I feigned to be tired from cooking all day and I went into another room to "rest".  While I was pretend "resting". Alethea and everyone else got out a cake, party hats, banner, and party horns.  Then Alethea came and got me and everyone blew their horns, and shouted and sung "Happy Birthday".  I don't know who enjoyed it more, me or Alethea.

My daughter Ashley wanted some Christmas Stockings for the kids this year. At first I was going to make them but when I saw these cute ones at Hobby Lobby for only $2.00 I thought "Why make them?"  I did hand make a burlap tag for each one.  Post on that coming soon!

I decided on what we would wear for our photo shoot after I saw Alethea's dress.   Alethea's Christmas dress is a hand-me-down gift from a couple in my daughter's Bible study group.  I believe Atticus' cute outfit is also used.  Once we decided on the children's attire, I started looking for a black or red Christmas outfit.  I usually don't buy new Holiday clothes, but I've been wearing the same Holiday attire for years so I thought it was time for something new.  Plus, after all the sales, rewards discounts,  and coupons, my dress was practically free.  So all three of us are looking pretty nice for almost nothing!

Atticus has such a curious nature.  He is always watching people, especially his sister.  I love how he is watching her open this present.

I wanted to get one good "Brother/Sister" photo but it was so hard.  It is such a challenge photographing a baby and a toddler together.  Someone is always moving!

I just love Alethea's dress!  The top and hem are black velvet.  The white skirt is taffeta with a black velvet design, and the dress is even more festive with the pretty red bow.

We wondered if we should put Baby Atticus is something more formal to match our dresses, but I just really liked this "Baby's 1st Christmas" outfit.  I thought it was so cute, plus I prefer babies in soft clothing for comfort.  And by the way, isn't he the most handsomest baby boy?  He is going to be quite the heart breaker when he's older!

Now if you're looking for a new holiday dress, I highly recommend this one.  As of Sunday, it is still available in both red and black, and it's half off!  My favorite thing about it is that the material does not wrinkle.  I ordered it on line and when I pulled it out of the plastic bag there were no wrinkles.  I also love the black piping and bell sleeves. And, it's a good length for my 5'7 frame.  Most dresses are always too short on me.

I paired my dress with all black accessories...everything is old other than the dress so I have no links for you,

The dress is by Liz Claiborne and you can find it HERE!  I'm wearing a size 6 for your size reference.

Oh my precious grand babies, how I love them so.  They are my two favorite presents under the Christmas Tree.

One Skirt For Three Seasons

Is it possible to style one skirt for three seasons?  It sure is, with a few simple tricks.  In this post I will show you how I not only created three completely different looks with one skirt, but also how I was able to wear it in three different seasons!

I picked up this mustard floral skirt at Charlotte Russe for only $4.99.  I thought I had struck gold when I saw it.  I loved the color and the style.

The first time I wore this skirt was to a zoo in South Carolina.  It was a hot day, so I paired it with a sleeveless purple tank, rose gold walking sandals, a black straw hat, and I carried a straw bag.

In the fall I paired the skirt with a light weight long sleeve top, denim vest, beige straw hat, and open toe booties.  I carried a straw bag with blue and beige colors.

Now that it is Winter in Wisconsin (I know the calendar says it's still fall, but trust me, it's winter in Wisconsin.  We've already had snow and temperatures in the single digits) I paired the skirt with a white sweater, fur vest, brown slouchy boots, a brown bag, and I put a brown belt around my waist.

I only wore the fur vest as outerwear.  When I got to my destination, I removed the vest.

Everything I'm wearing in this post is old, but I will link to similar options at the end of this post.

I chose a brown bag to coordinate with all the other shades of beiges and browns in the outfit.

Slouchy boots are definitely trending this season.  I was smart, and saved mine from many years ago. If there's anything I've learned about fashion in my life it's that trends ALWAYS come back in style;  so if there is something you've spent a lot of money on (like boots) and they go out of style, just put them away for awhile.  I can guarantee you they will be BACK in style.

I added this brown belt for two reasons.  First, it is the same shade as the boots so the belt ties the entire outfit together.  Second, the belt provides some shape to this outfit.  Without it, the outfit could come across as a bit frumpy due to all the long, loose clothing.

For jewelry, I wore my Native American pieces I picked up on my Utah vacation.  I thought the style fit the boho vibe I had going on, and the bright colors picked up the colors in the skirt and pulled them up to the neckline.

Even though the skirt is a thin cotton material,  I stayed cozy warm on this 40 degree day because of the sweater on top.  I also wore pantyhose under my skirt.  I know pantyhose are no longer "in", but I knew no one would see them under my skirt and with the tall boots.

The skirt is shorter in front and longer in back.

I think the main reason this skirt works for three seasons is because of the color.  The colors are perfect for fall, summer, and winter.  I think it would be more difficult to make a pastel colored skirt work for three seasons.  So my suggestion if you are trying to buy less clothes and extend their life into more seasons, is to be choosy about color and only pick colors that would work for more than one season.

So do you have a favorite look, fall, summer or winter?  Or do you like them all?  I'd love to hear from you.
