"Coastal Grandma Wisconsin Style" with Stylish Monday Link Up

On the second Monday of every month a group of style bloggers and I pick a theme, style an outfit based on that theme, and then do a link up together where you can join too!  This month's theme is "Coastal Grandma".

"Coastal Grandma" is a new trend in fashion, interior design, and lifestyle that I am so excited to get behind.  I think it's awesome that older women are finally getting noticed, that their style is being imitated and their lifestyles envied by the younger population.  The trend began on Tik Tok in March with Lex Nicoleta who created the phrase "Coastal Grandma", although some say it really started with Diane Keaton in the 2003 movie "As Good as it Gets".

What is "Coastal Grandma"?  "Think shingled beach homes, light and airy chambray button-downs, linen everything, bountiful backyard gardens filled with various lettuce varieties, and a meticulously maintained chicken coup with more square footage than a Manhattan apartment. That's coastal grandma." (Marie Caire)

Now I don't live anywhere near the coast, but I will say the look and lifestyle of "Coastal Grandma" completely describes me, minus the chicken coop (Although I'd love to have chickens. We just haven't gotten around to it yet).  This coastal grandma Wisconsinite lives in a historic 100+ year old brick home complete with a massive cottage style perennial garden and vegetable garden.  I go outside everyday to pick my lunch fresh from my garden.  My fashion style has always been 100% about comfort.  If something isn't comfortable, I just won't wear it.

Although you can wear color with the "Coastal Grandma" look (as the other ladies in the group have shown), I chose a neutral palate or a Diane Keaton inspiration copy.  Many fashion bloggers seem to be either all about color or all about neutrals,  I'm neither.  I love to wear color, but I also don't mind wearing neutrals on occasion either.

Now while the "Coastal Grandma" look is all about linen, I am not a fan of linen.  I just can't stand the wrinkles.  Gauze is a much better alternative as it is still light weight and airy and doesn't look like I just rolled out of bed.  So for my "Coastal Grandma" look I chose this cotton gauze top from Stitch Fix, thrifted polyester tan pants from Talbots, flat taupe shoes, a beachy-style handbag, and a beige sweater because it was a cool day.

Now let's see how the other ladies in the group have interpreted the "Coastal Grandma" trend and be sure to link up your fashion posts with us too!

Shelbee

Shelbee - Shelbee on the Edge-Coastal Chic: Want to try a new style trend on a budget? Check out my mostly thrifted outfit that brought this trend to life for me without breaking the bank!

Nancy

Nancy -  Nancy’s Fashion Style -Well I don't live near the coast, and if I'm near the coast it's in England. And I'll tell you I've never seen anyone walking there in the coastal grandmother style, more raincoats and Hunters style. I think you should picture more of the California coast then. And warm neutrals, trousers with elastic at the waist and especially comfortable.......you hear it, I'm really not a fan of it. Maybe my fashion friends can make me change my mind. But do take a look at what I made of it!

Nina

Nina - Sharing a Journey - While I am not keen on the “Grandma” in the title, I love coastal chic vibes in clothing, lifestyle and interiors.  Coastal Chic is for everyone and can be created from our wardrobes –no need to go out and buy anything new!

Emma

Emma - The Style Splash - Coastal Chic is pretty much the antithesis of my style -  neutrals, linen and minimalism are my kryptonite. But I love a challenge, so I adapted this trend of the moment to suit my style.

Suzanne

Suzanne - Ask Suzanne Bell - For me, "Coastal Grandma" is less of a style (look), and more of an aesthetic, one we’ve been embracing in our Coastal Communities, unaware that we were trending. Think Oprah, Ina Garten, Martha Stewart, or my personal favorite, Diane Keaton, who by the way, was 56 years YOUNG, when she filmed the movie Something's Gotta Give. The best part? You don't have to be a grandmother, or live in a coastal community to try out this look. Furthermore, there’s a good chance you can recreate a Coastal Chic look, with items you already own in your closet!

Andy

Andy - Pearls and Pantsuits - Coastal Chic, or “Coastal Grandmother” as the TikTok crowd calls it, is a whole vibe, and I’m so here for it! I’m a sucker for linen pants, so my take on the trend consists of a comfy pair of linen pants from Target, paired with a breezy chambray tunic from Chico’s. I added the straw bucket hat as an homage to the OG Coastal Grandmothers - Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton.

Nicole

Nicole - High Latitude Style - Coastal Chic depends on so much more than just personal style. Consequently, there is no one-fits-most solution. Factors like ocean and air temperatures, color and type of the beach, weather, time of the year, culture, location, your activities, etc. play a role. When living in Europe, I loved long beach walks in The Netherlands in fall on a windy day with gray skies. My typical outfit was a yellow men’s rain jacket with hood, jeans, and rubber boots.

Julie

Julie - Fashion Trends and Friends and Instagram FashionTandF -  If you follow me, you know that I love all the bright colors, more is better and unique pieces call my name! Therefore, when this theme was decided on, I was quick to bow out. Not sure why I tend to do that but I always rethink my decision and like pushing myself to try new styles, and new things I wouldn't normally wear or pick out without a little nudge! So here is my spin on this Tik Toc originated trend!

Ada

Ada - Elegance and Mommyhood - The Coastal Grandma trend has a silly name which is kind of offensive and ageist but what the trend means itself is indeed beautiful. To me - and I am nowhere close to being a grandma - it stands for effortless breezy summer looks that you would wear by the coast on a beach, especially in blues and whites (the color of sea and sand), floppy hats, sunglasses, sandals, flip flops & wedges. I chose this beachy look from my Florida vacation because it is perfect for the coast and the beautiful neutral crochet dress reminds me of grandmas.

And Me!

Amy - Amy’s Creative Pursuits -  There are so many different ways one can embrace the coastal trend, my favorite is the classic, neutral look where you mix different shades of whites, creams, and beiges in one outfit.

Have A Great Day! Amy

Spring Fashion Trends with Stylish Monday

On the second Monday of every month a group of style bloggers and I pick a theme, style an outfit based on that theme, and then do a link up together where you can join too!  This month's theme is "Spring Trends".

This month Nina challenged us to choose from five spring trends this season:  1.  Pleats,  2. Bright Colors, 3. Halter Neckline, 4.  Statement Suits,  5. Cut Outs (and a couple of ladies picked their own spring trend).  I really wanted to show a halter dress,   but we are experiencing cold temperatures in Wisconsin so I chose "Bright Colors".

The Pantone Color of the year is "Periwinkle" but as usual with their color picks I'm not seeing it in the stores or on people.  I always feel whatever color Pantone picks,   I never see it trending till 1-3 years later.  It must have something to do with manufacturing I'm sure.  But the color I am seeing everywhere is yellow!  People seem to love this happy, bright color!

I found this cute and comfy sweatshirt on clearance for $7.00 at Walmart.  I thought it would be perfect for these cool spring temperatures we've been experiencing in Wisconsin.

I styled my spring sweatshirt with black embroidered jeans.  The floral embroidery on the jeans is also perfect for welcoming spring

I love to wear casual, comfy clothes yet add some accessories to elevate the look so it doesn't look like I'm just chilling at home.  One way I do this is by wearing jewelry.  For this look I wore a gold bracelet, a colorful beaded necklace, and a pair of drop earrings.

Footwear can also change a look from casual to dressy.  If I would have worn sneakers with this outfit, it would have been a lot more casual.  Instead,  I wore pointy toe burgundy flats.  The flats are still comfy, but dressy at the same time.

And now lets see what the rest of the ladies in the group are wearing and be sure to link up your outfits with us below too!

Shelbee

Shelbee - Shelbee on the Edge - Bra tops and bell bottoms are two trends together that appeal to my hippie soul. I found these amazing embroidered bell bottoms and the coordinating fringe cardigan at Indigo Sun, a funky little bohemian boutique we visited in Asheville on my recent road trip adventure. And now I am officially ready for festival season!

Suzanne

Suzanne - Ask Suzanne Bell - Secured at the back of the neck, a halter style dress or top highlights your shoulders and is an incredibly flattering silhouette, yet many of us shy away from this style due to not knowing what type of bra or support works with this style dress/top. Fortunately, the halter is my all-time favorite silhouette, and I’ve got you covered underneath with styling solutions + bras and bralettes, on the blog…

Lucy

Lucy - Lucy Bertoldi.com  Bright colours make my heart sing and I’m in complete dopamine styling mode when I see the Spring sunshine.  Is it just me or are other Northern girls itching to pull out the sandals (even if only for a photo moment)?

Nicole

Nicole - High Latitude Style - The trend to invest in this year is fringes if your personal style is Bohemian or Rock’n Roll. This is due to fringes being a perennial trend. Even if your personal style is not one of the two, a fringe clutch may be worth it when your most frequent travel destination is a beach resort. It’s perfect with a beach dress or resort style.

Julie

Julie - Fashion Trends and Friends and Instagram FashionTandF -  The current spring 2022 trends include: pleats, bright colors, halter neckline, statement suits or cutouts. Additionally, feathers and wearing bras as a top are trending! You know my mantra: Wear what you love or what speaks to you and you'll always look great! Can you guess which of these appeal to me the most? Hop over to my blog to see if you guessed correctly!

Nancy

Nancy -  Nancy’s Fashion Style - It has to be tiered dresses. I already bought last year several and I am still very much in love with this design. In fact I already ordered a few more! These two are my favourites from last year. I actually like it better to wear them without a belt, but these two are very bulky. They would have been perfect if there were pockets in it. I will show my latests tiered dresses soon on the blog!

And Me!

Amy - Amy’s Creative Pursuits - As a Wisconsin Gal, every spring we have to deal with frigid temperatures, leaving me in quite the conundrum as I want to wear spring clothes but I can’t.  How do I solve the problem?  By wearing bright colors in warm winter fabrics.

Have a Great Day! Amy

"Denim for Days" with "Stylish Monday"

On the second Monday of every month a group of style bloggers and I pick a theme, style an outfit based on that theme, and then do a link up together where you can join too!  This month's theme is "Denim".

Is anyone else as confused about denim trends as I am?  Are skinny jeans "in" or "out"?  What about low- rise verses high-rise?  I remember when low-rise was all the rage and anyone who wore high-rise was mocked;  now the high-rise mom jeans are back in:  but so are the low-rise. In fact, when I went shopping recently it seemed every style was available to buy.  There is no distinct denim "trend" this season, so pick whatever style denim looks best on you!

I myself have a closet full of skinny jeans which I spent a small fortune on so I'm not in a rush to get rid of them.   However,  I eventually want to transition away from a skinny jean as I feel, ahem, I'm getting a "tad bit old for them" as my knobby knees are starting to show through.  I did buy a pair of straight leg Mavi  jeans this season, which I am really enjoying and they seem to have been my go-to-pair this past winter.

Here I am wearing my newest pair of denim:  Straight Leg Jeans by Mavi.

For this month's "Stylish Monday" post I decided to pull a VERY OLD denim dress from closet.  This dress is so versatile and classic which explains why it has lasted so long in my closet.  It is meant for warmer weather, but I can make it work for winter with the proper styling companions like a cardigan, tights, and booties.

I could literally wear any color cardigan with this dress, but on this day I chose a grey cardigan with an aztec print.

For footwear, I chose combat boots for both comfort and safety on ice covered sidewalks.

And now to show you how versatile and OLD this dress is, here are a few other ways I've styled it in the past:

With a suede jacket and ballet flats.

                                                                With a sunhat and sandals.

With a black cardigan and booties.

                                                                       With dress shoes

Have I inspired you to add a denim dress to your closet if you haven't already?  They are so versatile, you will never regret purchasing one.

And now let's see what the rest of the ladies in the group are wearing.

Nina

Nina - Sharing a Journey - Are you tired of jeans?  Skinny jeans were with us for such a long time I actually was bored.  Things have changed my friends, it’s time to try the new silhouettes .

Emma

Emma - The Style Splash - Until recently, I had never owned a denim dress or skirt…and then I bought two denim vintage dresses on eBay! I love the style of this dress, with the shoulder pads and embellishment. Oh, and it has pockets too!

Nicole

Nicole - High Latitude Style - This look triples on denim with the shirt skirt and booties.Unfortunately, denim or the good old blue jeans are not a good idea in winter in Alaska. It dries too slowly and hence your sweat may freeze. Therefore, denim is either a cover-up in summer in the form of a jacket or mosquito protection when gardening in the form of jeans. Ever since my college time, I had a denim skirt despite they don’t drape nicely.

Ada

Ada - Elegance and Mommyhood - A pair of dark wash skinny jeans will never ever go out of style - I don’t care what “the style experts” say. Dark skinny jeans are something every woman needs in her closet. I paired mine with the color of the year in a gorgeous shade of lilac.

Julie

Julie - Fashion Trends and Friends and Instagram FashionTandF -  Dark wash, light wash, distressed, high, mid and low waisted, flares, bootcut, wide leg, skinny, curvy fit, boyfriend…so many choices with colors, fit and style!  How do you even begin?!  I’m taking the mystery out of how to style your body type and sharing my current favorite jeans!

Nancy

Nancy -  Nancy’s Fashion Style - I am, and never have been, a huge denim lover. Although I have to say that I already own 3 pairs of jeans! But I did love this jumpsuit years ago, it was a bit snug so gave it away. Might have to shop for another one! I think I will love denim one day!

Shelbee

Shelbee - Shelbee on the Edge - I am embracing the resurgence of the 90s denim trends with my oversized black distressed dad jeans. I remember wearing my dad’s jeans exactly this way 30 years ago!

Suzanne

Suzanne - Ask Suzanne Bell - Think jeans aren’t for you?  Think again. Like many women, I hate shopping for jeans. It's a pain in the butt. So perhaps you've given up - convinced yourself that jeans are not for you.  Like swimsuits and bras, jeans are not a one style fits all. But with some guidance, I think you will find that jeans can be a classic staple. Find the fit for you, and you’ll have a wardrobe workhorse for life.

And Me!

Amy - Amy’s Creative Pursuits -  Denim dresses never go out of style, but they are really trending right now.  I have had this denim dress in my closet for years.  I normally wear it in the warmer months, but here I styled it for cooler temperatures.

Have a Great Day! Amy
