Gospel hit the mainstream at the end of the 80s and many popular bubblegum and crossover acts tried their hand at the genre, some never turning back. Here the MFM stable seized the moment and put out a compilation featuring most of their biggest stars, including Mercy Pakela, Ali Katt, PJ Powers (Hotline), William Mthethwa and keyboard fiend Mathambo aka Bones Brettell. Then there are the established names of the genre like Rebecca, Benjamin Dube, Pure Gold, at times backed by the likes of the Holy Spirits Choir, Forever Mass Choir, Baragwanath Choir and Galathia Ama First Born Choir.

HOLY SPIRITS CHOIR - Okholwa Kujesu (1987)
Polygram/Tshona TRSLP001
Producers: Joseph Makwela/Dr Nichojha
Engineer: John Lindermann

Formed in 1985 by Joseph Dumaku in Kroonstad, Free State. "Before they started recording they were singing at funeral services and that's where they were encouraged by the community to put their music on disc so that it would sound more powerful. Fortunately they were spotted by one of the producers at Teal Records who heard their music and decided that they shoud come to the studio for recording. Their first album with Teal Records was in Sotho entitled 'Kabelo Ya Ka'. They also did the very same album in in Zulu 'Okholwa ku Jesu'." Just cos it's gospel don't mean it ain't funky - there are some KILLER synth-fuelled tracks on the album. Not too much variation - but all good!

Kroonstad-born Joseph Dumako was a prominent gospel composer and producer in the mid to late-80s, working with the Holy Spirits Choir and the Forever Mass Choir, among others. As a solo artist, he used the name Joseph Dee. Freaky kiddy-fiddler cover art aside, the best thing about this album is the synthesized take on our national anthem, then still a symbol of the struggle against apartheid.

Formed in 1985 by Joseph Dumaku in his hometown of Kroonstad in the Free State. "Before they started recording they were singing at funeral services and that's where they were encouraged by the community to put their music on disc so that it would sound more powerful. The album ("Trust in Jesus") sold over 50 000 units within six months of release. Producer "Dr Nichojha" may well have been none other than West Nkosi, using a different name for legal reasons. Just 'cos it's gospel don't mean it ain't funky - there are some KILLER synth-fuelled tracks on the album. Not too much variation - but all good!
