MADLALA BROTHERS - Indod'emnyama (1987)

Mpumelelo/Spear/Tusk, ERH2056

Recorded at: RPM Studios

Indod'emnyama ("black man") sees brothers Bhekabantu & Thembitshe Madlala inject some synthesized flair into the traditionally guitar driven maskandi, a style they perfected on later albums like Umona (1989) and Usebuyil' Ududuzile (1991).

Killer electro-Maskandi from brothers Bekabantu and Thembitshe Madlala. Leather jackets and white pants outside a Zulu kraal say it all. The guys are the real makhoya. 1989's Umona is a superior album to their 1991 follow up Usebuyil' Ududuzile. Older albums by the brothers include Indod' Emnyama (Black Man), Imbuzi Emnyami (Black Goat),  Ngihamba noJesu (I'm going to Jesus), Saphela Amathotho, Thandiwe (1988) and Hambakahle Duduzile, all on WEA/Tusk's Spear imprint.

A 80s disco take on traditional Zulu maskandi, where signature guitars are replaced by bad-ass synths, accompanied by accordians, silky smooth vocal harmonies and familiar mbaqanga bass runs. Nice cover pics taken on what looks like the beach in Durban.
