Tadanobu Take Us Away

Nothing like a hint of Tadanobu Asano's furry tum-tum to take us into the weekend with a buzz -- sure the world's on fire but there are still for the moment small pleasures to be had. (In fact you can see three more of these small pleasures right here.) As for the weekend, well, it's here. And there's a new Final Destination movie to enjoy! If you missed my review earlier you can read it here -- I'm seeing it myself a second time tomorrow because once again we must grab onto the good things while they're available! Such doom tinged to all of my optimissm these days! Weird, right? Where could all of that be coming from... aaaanyway I have a second review of a different movie coming out this weekend that will drop at some point in the next couple of days, so check back and I'll try to post about that. Until then... well just smoke 'em if ya got 'em, my friends. Poof!

Garfield's Great Big Globes

Not to overdo it with Andrew Garfield this week (much to my hater boyfriend's chagrin no doubt -- although he did give Andy a compliment last night saying that "the beard makes his face less disgusting" lol; unlike me he's not a fan!) but I loved the green Versace suit he wore to the Globes. And our boy knew he looked good and he was slutting it up like nobody's business...

... with all the extra cleavage emphasis. So we're giving him this little spotlight, our boyfriend be damned! I'm actually really posting now because I forgot to mention the Globes at all in this morning's Andy post, even though I watched the whole damned thing -- did anybody else watch? Winner of the night to my eye was Demi for that truly lovely speech she gave. And our beloved Tadanobu Asano of course!

But Tadanobu always wins, just by being Tadanobu. But I am curious what y'all thought of the show, the winners, the fashion. So if you have any thoughts please toss them my way in the comments. And in return I have an entire gallery of Andy being the bearded belle of the ball (with a couple of bonus guests!) after the jump...

An Excellent Cosmo

I spent my Sunday binging all ten episodes of Shōgun on Hulu (which stars out boy Cosmo Jarvis, seen above and also in these gifs I made a couple weeks ago of his nude scene on the series before watching any of it) -- have any of you watched it yet? It gets thirteen samurai swords up from me -- go watch it if you haven't. I have never seen the original miniseries with Richard Chamberlain, nor I have ever read the book, but watching this series felt like devouring an entire novel and once I was all in I couldn't quit. Stayed up way past my bedtime last night finishing the show. Fantastic television that had my jaw dropping more than once an episode -- that earthquake scene! -- and riveted by all of the intricate political maneuvering in between. Plus Hiroyuki Sanada AND Tadanobu Asano? Are you kidding me? Don't miss it!

The Devil with the Long Black Hair

Even though I got this press release a few days ago I'd been holding out on writing the post until I could have a page on Film Forum's website to link you to, but my patience has eradicated itself -- I can no longer not trumpet their upcoming "Japanese Horror" series, which is abso-fucking-lutely monumental in my eyes. From March 1st-14th they will be screening 25 of the greatest Japanese Horror movies ever made -- everything from old-school classics like Onibaba and Kwaidan to classic kaiju movies like the original Godzilla and Mothra films (although sidenote, especially to the programmers out there: I wish somebody would screen some lesser appreciated kaiju movies -- give me some Gamera movies; heck even some of Millennium-era Godzilla movies!) and then...

... all the way up through the J-Horror classics like Ringu and Pulse. And nineteen more besides those mentioned titles! Audition! The Face of Another! Throne of Blood! Hausu! Ichi the Killer! The list goes on and on and I kind of want to spend March 1st through 14th inside Film Forum now. If you're here in New York you've got no excuses -- go see one (or twenty-five) of these movies and I promise you, you will not leave disappointed. There are a couple I've never seen before (I have been holding off on A Page of Madness for some reason -- maybe this was that reason!) but all of the ones I have seen all rule hardcore.

Anyway like I said at the start I don't have a link to where you can buy tickets yet but keep your eyes on Film Forum's website and it'll probably appear later this month. For now I'll put the entire press release, which includes the entire line-up and a tentative schedule, here after the jump...

Good Morning, World

I'd scrolled and scrolled through Instagram this morning hoping somebody would do me a solid and post something gratuitous to give me an easy post since I'm running late -- and voila, just when I was about to give up, Japanese legend Tadanobu Asano of all people came through. I was surprised the last time he served thrist too, and I should stop doing that. Looking good, baby!

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Ichi the Killer (2001)

Ichi: Listen, when you're giving pain to someone, don't think about the pain that person is feeling. Just concentrate on how good it feels to be causing someone pain. That's the best thing you can do for a true masochist!

A happy 63 to director Takashi Miike today!

Good Morning, World

Can't say that I expected a shirtless gym selfie from Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano to pop up in my Instagram timeline yesterday but wowee wow wow am I glad to be proven a dope. If you're trying to place him Asano has made plenty of U.S. movies over the years -- he was in the first three Thor movies -- but he'll always be Ichi the Killer (the titular maniac of Takashi Miike's 2001 splatter-piece) to me. Anyway he usually just posts his art (which I actually really like!) on his Insta, so this was a surprise treat.

I Quit Smoking Thirteen Years Ago Today

Lucky thirteen, y'all! That's how that thing works, right? Well maybe I'm no numerologist but what I do know is I tossed cigarettes in the trash on May 5th 2008 and I ain't never been back, and that's a thing I celebrate here on MNPP every single year every May 5th by posting enormous galleries of extremely attractive actors doing the exact thing that I no longer do. It keeps me honest.

Well if not honest... it keeps me something, anyway. Last year, as with many aspects of last year, we hit a snag though -- because I was quarantined at home over this anniversary I'd been separated from the big folder of photos that I'd keep gathering up to post for 2020. And so last year's post was admittedly a bit slack. Well...

... this year's post makes up for it, and it makes up for it then some. I've got all the photos I'd gathered for 2020 plus all the photos I've gathered in 2021, and it's gonna give y'all a hell of a nicotine buzz. If you don't die of cancer before you're finished with this post then I haven't done my job! I make light (get it) but seriously... don't smoke. You don't look at good as these guys do doing it, I promise you. Well unless you're actually KJ Apa reading this, in which case... call me, KJ Apa. You can blow smoke (or anything) on me any time. And with that, let's hit the jump for dozens more...
