The Book of Leviticus

Neon just dropped the above... poster...s... for the upcoming gay horror film Leviticus -- since it's a gif of two images I'm not sure what to call it. I've seen the phrase "motion poster" before so I suppose that fits. Anyway they're both great images, and supposedly we're getting a trailer tomorrow (the movie is out on June 19th) but, unlike the trailer for the new Evil Dead movie that I just posted, I doubt I will share the one for Leviticus. Because I've seen Leviticus -- I posted about it about a month ago, that it was playing the "New Directors" fest here in NYC -- and I am one hundred percent certain y'all should go into this movie as cold as possible, like I did. I've really been wanting to write up my thoughts on the film, which are myriad and emotional, but I've hesitated for a couple of factors.

One is that I'm not sure I can write about it without talking about everything going on with it, but honestly that's not been the main issue. The other is that, and I don't think this will surprise any of you who've been here lately, I've really had some writer's block bogging me down over the past several months. I've felt like it's had to be super obvious to any of you visiting -- I've really been operating on auto-pilot lately, and I need to get myself out of this funk. Especially if I'm going to write about a movie like Leviticus, which moved me in some profound and extremely personal ways. So if anybody has any words of encouragement I wouldn't hate to hear them, is what I'm saying -- the thing is that I'm hardly alone in feeling broken by the world these days, and I guess that's what's sort of kept me clammed up about it. It's been very much the preacher's funeral sermon in Synechdoche New York -- "Maybe because no one wants to hear about my misery because they have their own." It all feels redundant and obvious and in turn pointless and it cycles, and cycles. Hopefully I can dig myself out of this grave and do better! Understatement! Anyway here's some video I took of Leviticus director Adrian Chiarella introducing the movie at MoMA a couple of weeks back; he really speaks beautifully:

Wrappin' It Up

As seen down below this week o' mine is pretty crowded with screenings and so I'll be checking out early basically every day  -- last night was the fancy-schmancy premiere of David Lowery's Mother Mary (I saw both Julio Torres and Patti Harrison in the lobby afterwards!)  while tonight I'm off to see the new version of The Mummy from director Lee Cronin. And when I tell you I have avoided all information on The Mummy so I could go in fresh I mean it -- I didn't even know until I decided to look up a picture of it for this post that everybody's favorite shitty boyfriend slash dick-flasher Jack Reynor of Midsommar fame is in the thing. Aww we've missed him. Anyway this is me saying bye, I gotta run. Or rather I gotta "wrap it up" hardy har get it cuz The Mummy... sigh...

Good grief my screening schedule this week is BONKERS (and this isn't even counting the Herzog 3D movie and JOHN WATERS LIVE on Saturday!)

Saint Juli

Juliette Binoche, the world's greatest living actress according to me (sorry Isabelle Huppert, I do go back and forth, but Juli is love), was in NYC last evening at MoMA to show off her directorial debut In-I In Motion, a documentary she and her sister made about a dance performance that Juli created and performed in 2007 with the choreographer Akram Khan, and I was there because she's Juliette fucking Binoche and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Above are some photos and videos I took from the Q&A. I thought the doc was terrific but then I cannot be trusted as I could literally just stare at Binoche's face for ten hours straight and never get bored -- she remains utterly transfixing. The first question my boyfriend asked when I got home afterwards was if she cried, and SHE DID -- she knows her audience. She teared up several times during the Q&A because her emotions really are just like Right There at all times and I don't know how exhausting that must be for her but we are all the richer for it. Incredibly this was Binoche's first time ever being on stage at MoMA, a fact that blows my mind -- I have been in her holy presence before at NYFF but this was special all the same. A legend.

Me & Timmy & Co

As promised nay threatened last evening I scurried off to devour a second helping of Marty Supreme, and as you can see above my dreams came true and Mr. Chalamet himself was there for the Q&A after. They weren't advertising who would be there, they just said "cast" on the invite, but it was pretty much everybody! (Hey Gwyneth.) Even the real life ping-pong player who plays Marty's nemesis. (Although "nemesis" is a strong word because the film never goes the "Ivan Drago" route and demonizes the player sopposite Marty, which is smart -- dude makes enemies every time he opens his mouth and they're much scarier than ping-pong opponents.) Anyway check the pics, watch the vids, enjoy. More to come on Marty later. Eventually. (It's out in 9 days so soon.)

And the Chalamet Goes Wild

And with that I am off to see Marty Supreme a second yes second time -- weirdly after a double-check I realized I never shared here my Bluesky reaction from my first viewing so I'll share that down below. I don't suppose it will surprise any of you who consider me Timmy-pilled but given how hit-n-miss I find the Safdies I think it should. This was by no means a guaranteed response from me. Anyway there will supposedly be "cast" present at this screening I'm headed to now, but they're not telling us who exactly -- so press your ear to your window in a few hours to see if you can hear my fan-girl shrieking and immediately know that I'm in a room with my Timmy without me having to say it. (With my luck it'll just be that asshole from Shark Tank, sigh.) All that said maybe check my Instagram too, as there will be photos. And I will be reviewing this movie before its release at Christmas, so perhaps I can persuade you with "words" not just pictures, as I know Timmy's face drives some of you to madness. Cheers, see ya tomorrow!

The Daily Pillion Post

Just in case staring at beautiful and talented men being funny and thoughtful and charming whilst speaking about a wonderful piece of exceptionally horny gay art they created together is your thing (and I am assuming here at MNPP that it would be) there above are some photos and videos from last night's special Pillion screening here in NYC last night. Disgustingly handsome writer-director Harry Lighton is seen there sandwiched between his two stars, Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, just as we all would be so fortunate to be. What a trio! What a movie! Read my review here if you have not done so yet. And thus went my daily Pillion post.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

Thelma (2024)

Daniel: I can't ... I can't do anything. I literally
can't do anything. I'm such a little bitch.

Aww, Fred Hechinger! You're my little bitch if that makes you feel any better. A very happy 26th birthday to the White Lotus and Nickel Boys actor -- we were immediately smitten with him when he popped up in the Fear Street movies and it's been nothing but hits since then. (Well okay I wasn't nuts about the prissy gay villain stereotypes that he and Joseph Quinn performed for Ridley Scott's Gladiator sequel but I don't really blame the actors for that. That was Sir Ridley's doing.)

As for this year Fred has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role in Marty Supreme (seriously if I wasn't so nuts about him that I recognized him from the back and blurry I might not have realized it was him at all, that role is so tiny) but if you haven't watched this year's romance Preparation For the Next Life you should seek it out -- you can rent it at all the usual places. It's from Bing Liu, the director of the stellar doc Minding the Gap, and it definitely proves he's got the stuff for a move over to fiction films. It's a lovely little movie and Fred (along with his co-star Sebiye Behtiyar) are both terrific in it. It's a shame it's too small for major awards attention but maybe the Spirits will notice it!

Posted some photos and video of my boy FRED HECHINGER and director Bing Liu at tonight's screening of PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT LIFE at Asia Society over on the Insta www.instagram.com/p/DN7EiUvjpeg/ (The movie is lovely and also a love letter to Fred's shoulder and back hair i.e. a masterpiece)

Good Morning, World

I know, I know, it's like Pillion all day every day around here -- and the movie's not even out until February here in the U.S.! But it's out in the U.K. right now so, since we're a global internet, we're also getting inundated with stuff -- not to mention the movie is still gunning for awards attention here Stateside. And is worthy of such! (Here is my review.)

Anyway I really loved this collection of set photos that photographer Chris Harris posted on his Instagram -- see a lot more at this link. And also it actually is a big Pillion Day for me personally because I'm going to go see it again a third time tonight, and be in the room with director Harry Lighton and one Alexander Skarsgård for a second time this very evening! And hopefully Alex won't be recovering from a stomach bug like he was the last time I saw him (see those photos here). Nobody wants to make out when they're not feeling well, after all.

Bonjour, François

Okay okay okay unlike how half-assed yesterday turned out to be here, I should be (knock on François Arnaud's wood) around posting much more today. Phew! And lets's start off with some true hotness to get our juices good and flowing -- actor slash bisexual king François Arnaud (who I just happened to stand beside at a film's after-party last week and y'all lemme tell you, his prettiness very seriously translates to the real world -- my god) was photographed for Nuvo magazine (via) yesterday and we're lucky enough to have the photos and video. I mean obviously -- what if I didn't have anything to post??? If a photoshoot gets photographed in the woods and nobody sees it does the photoshoot exist? Whoa this is all way too heady for a Wednesday morning, my sincerest apologies. Hit the jump and I will shut up and let you just ogle the pretty now...

No Other Master

Much the way I end up wanting several different versions of posters every time a new Yorgos Lanthimos movie comes out -- and sidenote I can't believe I never linked to the big recent NYT article about Yorgos' longtime poster designer Vasilis Marmatakis, which can be seen here -- I feel the same every time a new Park Chan-wook movie hits. And sure enough his latest No Other Choice has cause for a buffet of movie art beauty. The one seen above is an echo of the main poster, previously posted here -- I already own a copy of that earlier poster but I would one hundred percent also like to buy the one seen here too. Sigh! And don't even get me started on the transclucent one that was being handed out at screenings of the movie in South Korea! I'd kill every person I love to just hold one of those in my hands! Aaaanyway why am I bringing up a movie I have 1) already reviewed out of NYFF right here, and 2) isn't actually out in limited U.S. theaters until Christmas? Because I got some super-powered star-fucking I am super-psyched to mention! I'm about to check another "breathing air with a favorite director" experience off my bucket-list tonight when I see this movie for a third time and it's followed up by a Q&A with Master Park himself! And his leading man, long time beloved hunk Lee Byung-hun, will be there as well! I AM SO EXCITED, YOU GUYS. I'll clearly be posting from it over on my Insta, so keep your eyes peeled there. Did you see my photos of Joel Edgerton and William H. Macy at a screening of Train Dreams last night? They're below if you missed 'em. Tis the busy busy awards-season time of year so expect more star-fuckery to come.

Some snaps of Joel Edgerton, William H. Macy and director Clint Bentley at tonight’s TRAIN DREAMS screening! #traindreams @Netflix.com

Good Night Oscar

Have you seen the photos of Oscar Isaac taken at the Los Angeles premiere for Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein last night? Here are two of them but he looks so handsome in every damn picture I recommend you search around (or just check my Bluesky where I posted more) -- they're worth losing yourself in! Kinda wild how he just keeps getting better looking -- I actually saw him coming out of a screening of Richard Linklater's new movie at NYFF last week and stood two feet from him and it ain't photoshop y'all. The man's a dream. Anyway let these photos hold you tight cuz I sure ain't gonna -- I'm off to see the new Yorgos Lanthimos picture! Yay me! Bye!

Alexander Skarsgård, Leather Queen

As you may or may not have heard (although all signs point to "have") I'm in the middle of New York Film Festival duties right now, and for the most part (save yesterday but don't ask) having a grand old time. You can see what there is of coverage so far right here, with the caveat slash promise that lots more coverage will be coming. Anyway I figured I'd share the above photos and videos that I took over the weekend of Pillion writer-director Harry Lighton with his star Alexander Skarsgard at a non-NYFF-specific screenng of that movie -- which I reviewed here -- because there's never not a right time for the Skarsgård. And speaking of Sir Alex -- we've been deeply enjoying the BDSM-flavored outfits he's been rocking on the red carpets for Pillion so far, and it seems like a poll would be fun. Right? Right. Pick your favorite master...

Pics of the Day

As the caption says I went to a screening of Hedda, Nia DaCosta's forthcoming adaptation of Ibsen's play "Hedda Gabler" starring Tessa Thompson in the titular role, last night, and there are some photos from the Q&A and after-party that followed the screening. As a long-time Hoss-head I was most ecstatic to be in the same room with Nina Hoss, legend -- when I looked over and saw her and Steve Buscemi (!!!!) chatting it up excitedly right beside me I almost fell on the floor. I couldn't hear them but one can only assume she was doing his "just total fuckin' silence" monologue from Fargo. Anyway Hedda is out on October 22nd in theaters and then hits Prime a week later -- here's the trailer:

Why Don't You Take a Picture

I've been pushing my review of the Paul Reubens documentary Pee-wee as Himself pretty relentlessly all weekend -- I even posted about it on Instagram, with a little bonus bit you might not want to miss -- but now the time has come to push it here at MNPP. Go read it right here. I'm pretty proud of this one -- I can't overstate the importance of Paul and Pee-wee to being a big part of the brickwork that built up this weirdo standing before you today, and the doc does extremely right by him. Them? Him. If you haven't watched it yet, do! It's on HBO Max (if that's still what it's being called) now.

Hug It Out For A Not Half Day

I was just about to tell y'all that it was going to be a half day here at MNPP because I thought I had a press screening of the upcoming queer flick On Swift Horses starring Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter, and Diego Calva to head to -- watch the trailer here -- but I fucked up my calendar and the screening was actually this morning! Damn damn damn. I am so daft. Anyway I'll probably be able to sneak into another press screening soon so it's not the absolute end of the world, but I was really looking forward to running free and gay for an afternoon -- sigh. Come comfort me with a hug and our pant-fronts pressed tightly together, Jacob Elordi. Anyway I am seeing Andrew Scott live on stage doing Vanya tonight thanks to a generous friend so at least I do have some proximity to gayness on tap -- I need my fix or I'll turn blue, I tells ya.

Pics of the Day

On Thursday I was fortunate enough to attend the 20th anniversary screening of the film version of Strangers With Candy (which is finally getting a new physical media release soon, they told us!) at the IFC Center here in New York, and above are a few photos and one video from the Q&A that followed with Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, and Paul Dinello -- a Q&A that was moderated by Cole Escola no less! Cole of course co-starred with Amy on the brilliant three seasons of the far-too-hard-to-now-find series At Home with Amy Sedaris. Anyway in the video I shared Sedaris brings up a sequel idea that would see our queen Jerri Blank now attending college, and it looks like I have a new impossible thing to pin all of my hopes and dreams upon y'all! Cole could bring their At Home character of Chassie along for the ride -- have her be a mean sorority sister who torments Jerri. I MUST HAVE IT.

Pic of the Day

As stated last evening I did indeed get to go and see Paul Mescal play Stanley Kowalski in the new production of the Teneessee Williams classic A Streetcar Named Desire currently running at BAM in Brooklyn -- if that photo I took during the bows last night didn't clue you in to that fact already. It's a very fine production and all three leads -- alongside our Paul (who I suppose I should note given my audience is in his underwear twice and shirtless several times -- I was in the front row only ten feet away y'all and I kept myself seated; please clap!) there's Patsy Ferran (from my beloved Living with Bill Nighy!) as Blanche and Anjana Vasan (from Killing Eve) as Stella and they're all very very good. I had a couple quibbles with the staging, but then I have got to admit that having seen Gillian Anderson play Blanche in 2016 kinda spoiled me on this play -- she gave what I called at the time the greatest stage performance I'd ever seen, and that remains true today. Anderson played Stella as very much a larger than life archetype though, making the show mythic in its proportions; Ferran smartly brings the character down to earth and so her performance, while not quite as shattering for me, stood on its own. And I think Mescal was a better Stanley than Ben Foster was opposite Anderson -- now I'm picturing Paul & Gillian doing the show together and kapow, mind blown. Anyway I'm very happy I was able to get out of my foul headspace last night and escape into somebody else's foul headspace for a bit -- thanks, Tenneessee! Below are a couple more photos I took:
