I'm a Woman

.
I just told you people that yesterday on Twitter that Karen O and Danger Mouse's new album, called Lux Prima and you can buy it right here, is murdering it...
.
.
... and before that exquisite corpse has even had time to go cold Karen and Danger and some cute director dude named Spike Jonze went onto Stephen Colbert's show last night and made a live music-video for the song "Woman" and holy shit, this has this made my day, my week, my month. Behold!

The Night Man Cometh

.
There are lots of bad things happening on this Earth right now but in there among the very worst is the thought that David Lynch might never direct another movie, or another season of Twin Peaks, or anything, something, anything. So yesterday's news -- buried inside a Vulture article about "unsung books" written about Rock Musicians -- that Lynch has been trying to raise funds to make a movie about legendary 1930s bluesman Robert Johnson based on the book Love in Vain: A Vision of Robert Johnson, well that should not be undervalued. (Thx Mac) Supposedly Scorsese once was going to make the movie, but that didn't happen - the book isn't just a straightforward biography, but is a dream-like narrative that has Johnson selling his soul to the devil for musical genius. Dream-like, huh? Ya don't say Lynch is interested?

Anyway that's not all on the Lynch front -- his long-buried collaboration with his longtime composer Angelo Badalamenti called Thought Gang got dropped into the world this week - I haven't listened yet but I've no doubt weirdness is around the corner. I listen to Lynch's 2011 album called Crazy Clown Time all the time - the track with Karen O called "Pinky's Dream" is a beloved.

I Am Link

.
--- LOL Forever - Hands down the funniest thing you're gonna read this week - if not EVER (okay that might be over-selling it) - is this conversation between Obvious Child's Jenny Slate and Gabe Liedman and Vulture's Max Silvestre. They're all friends, you can tell, and it had my eyes watering with laughter listening in on them. The part where they're making fun of the guy whose favorite movie was Dancer in the Dark is brain-breakingly funny.

"Yeah. You know what is really cool to watch over and over again is somebody experiencing the dread of just going swiftly blind. That, to me, is really cool."

And then Jenny Slate tells what might be the single greatest story having to do with Todd Solondz's film Happiness that has ever been told. Alright I'm ruining too much, just go read it, it's spectacular. Oh and go see Obvious Child too, of course - it's great, here's my review of it.

--- Super Human - On top of yesterday's news that he's rebooting Predator, write-director Shane Black also wants to make a Doc Savage movie (I knew the name but that was all so I had to look him up - Doc Savage was a pulp character from the 30s and 40s, an adventurer with superhuman abilities, kind of Indiana Jones ramped up to 11). Anyway for the lead Black says he needs "a perfect physical specimen who inspires looks of awe due to the symmetry and perfection that he exudes" so naturally it's Chris Hemsworth that's they're thinking.

--- Over the Moon - I think that some of these leaked online a couple of years ago somehow, I swear I remember having them, but Karen O has announced her first solo LP for release this Fall, called Crush Songs, and it's a bunch of lo-fi songs she recorded in her bedroom back in 2006 and 2007. Supposedly they sound a lot like "The Moon Song," that Oscar-nominated ditty she did for Spike Jonze's Her last year. So if you liked that, you'll like this, and if you didn't like that, you have terrible taste.

--- Viva The Villains - Just the other day we were wondering what characters that Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll were playing in Ant-Man - well wonder no more, now we know. Corey is playing the big bad guy and Patrick Wilson is playing Stoll's character's cousin - this cousin person is apparently a big deal because he turns out to be a character named Crossfire, who you can read about over here. Apparently this means that Patrick will probably show up further down the road, perhaps in a tight costume, so hooray!

--- All Hail Snow - The first teaser-of-sorts for the next Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay Part 1 or whatever (I can't with these titles), has appeared - it doesn't have actual footage from the movie, but it does have Donald Sutherland being a bad-ass, which is probably even better than actual footage from the movie. Anyway I talked about it and made a weird connection over at The Film Experience, go read about that there.

--- Today's Man - I haven't gotten to watch this clips yet myself so I can't tell you if they rival that footage of Chris Pratt acting goofy in a tank top that we watched last week but The Today Show visited the set of Jurassic World and here you go, watch that here. I mean, just by virtue of Chris Pratt being in the video there's bound to be some adorableness, at least. (I just realized I never posted those shots of Chris at the beach here, but I did at the Tumblr, see them there. They're worth clicking on!)

--- Space Jam - Ridley Scott has apparently decided what he's making next, from a slew of projects - he is going to direct that script Drew Goddard adapted from the book The Martian, which will star Matt Damon as a man stranded alone on Mars. Kind of like Gravity, in the sci-fi loneliness thing, but without all that, you know, gravity stuff. Anybody read the book? I almost bought it the other day but it was expensive and I was cheap - never a good combo.

This Post is For You, Spike Jonze

.
I guess there's more to the Oscars that I want to talk about then I expected - namely, and I can't believe this skipped my mind earlier, that the most adorable director in all of the land Spike Jonze won a statue! Hooray! Look at that look he gives the camera at the end, with the head nod - that is pure unadulterated sex, delivered straight into my bloodstream. It's making me lightheaded even now. Also making me light-headed...

... apparently Spike has an Instagram account. I can't even believe I didn't know this. And he posted that shirtless picture a couple of weeks ago asking, "Who wore it better?" Does anybody know who the other dude is? Anyway since he asked...
.
.
Don't let me down, people. Anyway back to the Oscars - obviously Spike made the rounds last night and there were cameras and he was kissing everybody...

... he could get his lips on so after the jump,
a gallery of Spike Jonze being adorable at the Oscars.

Spike Jonze Singing

.

.
(via) Spike Jonze and Karen O and Her production designer KK Barrett all performed "The Moon Song" on the radio this morning and thankfully there's video of it. And yup, that's the final piece I needed for my lustful jonesing for Jonze to tip right on out into the stratosphere .Karen O. will be performing this song at the Oscars, didja hear? Maybe Spike can join her and don a leotard and do some arrhythmic interpretive dancing to it.

I Am Link

.
--- No Ass Kick - Jim Carrey has come out against his upcoming movie Kick-Ass 2, denouncing the violence in the wake of Sandy Hook etc etera. I see movie violence as more of a reflection of society than a cause, but I still think this is totally cool of him all the same. It creates a conversation, anyway. It also creates an opportunity for me to post that picture of Aaron Johnson's backside in costume, so bless you Jim.

--- Another She - I hadn't heard the news that Samantha Morton, my beloved, had been replaced as the voice of the computer that Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with in Spike Jonze's upcoming film Her - Scarlett Johansson is now voicing the role. I can only assume they wanted to go for sexy instead of sweet, because that's the only way that swap makes sense to me. Oh also some footage screened in LA this weekend, which Slash has word on.

--- White Wolf - Channing Tatum says he's playing a half-wolf half-human albino in the Wachowskis new film Jupiter Rising, so you know, he should be terribly attractive to look at, and all. Maybe they're giving him some body hair? Like... white grandpa body hair? I can only imagine. And worry. In a post-Cloud Atlas world I worry.

--- RIP MJ - There was some drama last week when it was announced that Shailene Woodley was cut out of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (she'd already filmed a couple scenes as Mary Jane, Peter Parker's other love interest); now comes word that Cronenberg regular Sarah Gadon has joined the movie, but the suits say she is not taking over the Mary Jane role.

--- Dino Tacular - What are purported to be story details for the fourth Jurassic Park film can be read over at JoBlo... or right here - apparently the park in the movie is going to be full operational, meaning full of people, and we're going to see aquatic dinos this time! There'll be a full Sea World-esque show. AWESOME. But they've managed to keep wraps on the super-secret super-smart dino that causes all the havoc, still.

--- Night Man - Joel McHale talked to EW a little bit about Beware the Night, that paranormal cop movie he's making with Eric Bana; most importantly they mention he had to be "in top physical condition, especially since he’s working opposite 'freaking Eric Bana.'” Fingers crossed that by "opposite" he really means "underneath."

--- Undead Daddy - Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to make the zombie movie Maggie, about a man whose daughter is slowly turning into one of the undead. I guess the script's fairly well received - course once it's Arnold saying yours precious words, expectations tend to change, eh?

--- And finally, here's the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new video (via) for the song "Despair," which is the first music video ever shot on the top of the Empire State Building. Karen O is life.

I'll Suck Your, Suck Your, Suck Your....

.
Much to my endless enthusiasm I got to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs perform in the relatively itty bitty Webster Hall last night (it's small for a band with their popularity) and it was a smashing show - Karen O is an amazing presence on stage, all smiles and shrieking, I do adore her so. I didn't take much in the way of pictures or videos like I normally do because after the second song she asked us kindly "to turn that shit off." But I'd already recorded the opening song by then, whoo! Here's their performance of the killer title track "Mosquito" off of their new album Mosquito, which hits stores next week. (The album is really really good you guys - totally buy it.) And for high-quality pics and the set-list, check out BrooklynVegan.

I Am Link

.
--- Gunn Nut - I'm completely unfamiliar with all of the characters involved in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy stories - There's a super raccoon? Really? - so I can't really make a joke about one of them brandishing a wrench and attacking mouthy moviegoers like I want to upon reading that Super director James Gunn is up for the gig. So insert something about Slither here.

--- Cap's Gal - Speaking of Marvel, three lovely ladies are up for the lovely lady role in the Captain America sequel (where they'll inevitably be outshone by Chris Evan's perkiest of bosoms) - they are Anna Kendrick, Felicty Jones and Imogen Poots. I know the latter two's names have buzz but I've yet to see them do anything, so I am relatively opinionless. Anna Kendrick's fun.

--- Franken O - Because she hates me and refuses to make another damn Yeah Yeah Yeahs album I have to take what I can get from Karen O, like this here new track off of the Frankenweenie soundtrack.

--- Vengeance Is His - Sam Jackson has taken a small role in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, as somebody that comes to know the wrath of Oh Daesu, or whatever the hell they're calling Josh Brolin's character. I haven't watched Oldboy in a few years but I know just who it is he's playing.

--- Lady Kick-Ass - Apparently there's a rumor that the producers behind the Expendables movies would like to make a female version with female action stars, and The Film Experience is on the casting fun. Hey guys Meryl Streep made an action movie one time!

--- Deadites Alive - Ash himself, Mr. Bruce Campbell, has seen a rough cut of the remake of Evil Dead, and he would like you to know that he thinks it is "fabulous."

--- Arm Candy - The Rock's biceps are literally as big, if not bigger, than Gina Carano's entire head. Good grief.

--- Northern Lad - A couple of weeks ago we wondered who'd be playing the character of Mance Rayder, aka the King Beyond the Wall, on A Game of Thrones after Dominic West admitted he'd turned the role down - looks like it'll be Ciaran Hinds, a wonderful actor (who nonetheless sadly won't be bringing the sexiness West would have).

Karen O Is The New Dionne Warwick

///////

Okay, this is completely random, but I've been listening to the newish Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, Show Your Bones, which is awesome.

And I've got this one song, "Cheated Hearts" stuck in my head.

But it's doing this freakish merging with Dionne Warwick's "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and it's repeating over and over in some unholy amalgam, and it won't leave me be! Leave me be, "Dionne O/ Karen Warwick" beast of my brain! You eat sanity!

(you can download "Cheated Hearts" here... and download the Dionne song here for comparison... See? I'm not crazy!)
