I Got It I Got It I Got It I Got it I Got It

This was a Sunday in '62, so here's that Sunday here and now, in beat-up condition though it may be. At least we get to see it at all (Thanks to our friend-in-Kelly Hun).

That's a great pose of Albert's in the first panel.

I'll post the other early '62 Sundays one of these days, but gee it's too busy around here to think about that now.

Bugdom

Today was another Sunday back in 1962. I remember '62 Sundays when I was a kid and enjoyed opening the funnies from the Rocky Mountain News AND the Denver Post. Unfortunately I hadn't started collecting Pogo yet, so no Sunday strip to show you today.

I want to post something, so here's a bit of Kelly's bugdom that I applied some shading to. I think Kelly's bugs could have been a swell 'topper' like a lot of the older Sunday comics had. Annnnnd, it coulda been called 'Bugdom'. Of course that was a computer game later on, but anyway . . .

A Cup of Cheer to Our New Year

Woosh, I almost missed my first deadline for the first daily of a long continuity, but I made it in time for this part of the country (8:30 pm). But here I am.

I'm not kidding that this is one of the busiest times I've ever had, for the next couple of months, so forgive me in advance if I blow off some days here or there, but I'll catch up when I need to.

So this continuity is only for dailies, and they're from 1962, meaning many of them may not have seen print in the books, though I haven't checked that out. I won't have Sundays from this continuity, but every once in a while I'll try to throw in some other Kelly stuff to keep it lively.

I may not have things to say about each posting, as time is precious, but I encourage you to leave comments as often as you can, cuz that inspires me to keep this thing going.

Happy New Year to you all, and Long Live Kelly!

Obtuse NUMPS of Stultified Hebetude

Kelly's dialogue is delicious, like cookies and milk.

Oh 🎵 3,679,40 and 1 🎵

Now, where was we, before being interrupted by one of the most divisive and ugly American politiwockle events, which is far from over. Indeed, what would Kelly have made of all this? But also knowing that he reserved Sundays for fun and frivolity for children and children at heart.

So,  we plunge ahead with our continuity!

Wow! Everybody's Talkin' About It!

Kelly knew when we needed a break from tomfoolery by giving us a cute intermission, enchanting us with charming characters and charming dialogue.

Meanwhile, the subject of a character index has surfaced, making me wonder if this bunny would be listed as:

Beast, man-eatin'
or
Beast, bug-eatin'

By the way, regarding an index of characters, did ya happen ta notice that I've been assembling a resemblance of one, bit by bit, over there on the right?  For what it's worth...

Them Ears is Blindin'!

Who knows why someone thought Rackety Coon Chile was a white kid, but 1952 is still my favorite Kelly year.

Fits of Foolish Glee, Hooray for Spring in '73

Here again is a two fer one posting of 1973 strips recycled from a decade earlier in 1963, as confirmed by our Friend-in-Kelly, Hun.

Only two tiers, but better than nothing, sez I.

Replete with Nuances an' Subtle Undershadings of Philosophy

This post (and really, posts to come) are dedicated to my good cyber-friend Loren, who, in our correspondence, was instrumental in convincing me to return to regular blogging here on Whirled of Kelly. She is a young art & animation student, whose love of animation finds great inspiration in the art and writing of Kelly.

Her enthusiasm for Kelly's cartooning genius; her appreciation of my curation of this site; her encouragement of the benefit to art students and pros, animation students and pros, and enthusiasts of all kinds has persuaded me to keep up with the hard work of sourcing, scanning, cleaning and curating Kelly's wonderful work.

I've written previously of my (and other people's) recurring night-time dream of wandering into an old bookstore and finding a Pogo book that I had never seen before, though I thought I had completed my collection long ago.

In reality, that dream came true just a few years ago.

I had not made a checklist of Pogo books to check off, but I really thought that I had them all. So when I saw The Pogo Sunday Book on a dusty book shelf, I did an actual double take and poked myself to see if this was one of those dreams.

I don't think the book is all that rare, but I've not seen one before or since the day that I grabbed it up to pay only a few dollars for. It's mostly a reprint of some of the earliest Pogo Sunday strips, heavily edited and in black and white. It was only very recently that I read the intro page by Kelly to realize that the first 10 pages of the book was a 'new' story of 1956 vintage. Looking at it now, I wonder if it was slated to be a story in the Pogo comic books, or 'just' one that Kelly and his assistant George Ward did just for this book.

And it's funny. I haven't had that recurring dream since.

I show the story here for all of you, and especially for Loren!

Like Unto a Fatal Hinge

It seems like Kelly did some similar variations on this baseball theme, but at least this one fills in a blank in our continuity of Sunday strips.

Any Calls While I Was Out?

My internet was on the frizzle for almost a week! No Google! No trailers! No porn! No wasting precious time on pointless crap! It was horrible. And worst of all, I had to skip another Sunday, Kelly Sunday!

Sorry about that, but blame my ISP—it truly was their fault, just because I dropped my landline in favor of my cell.

So I'm back, sound as a dollar .  .   .  uh oh.
