Wow! Everybody's Talkin' About It!

Kelly knew when we needed a break from tomfoolery by giving us a cute intermission, enchanting us with charming characters and charming dialogue.

Meanwhile, the subject of a character index has surfaced, making me wonder if this bunny would be listed as:

Beast, man-eatin'
or
Beast, bug-eatin'

By the way, regarding an index of characters, did ya happen ta notice that I've been assembling a resemblance of one, bit by bit, over there on the right?  For what it's worth...

Replete with Nuances an' Subtle Undershadings of Philosophy

This post (and really, posts to come) are dedicated to my good cyber-friend Loren, who, in our correspondence, was instrumental in convincing me to return to regular blogging here on Whirled of Kelly. She is a young art & animation student, whose love of animation finds great inspiration in the art and writing of Kelly.

Her enthusiasm for Kelly's cartooning genius; her appreciation of my curation of this site; her encouragement of the benefit to art students and pros, animation students and pros, and enthusiasts of all kinds has persuaded me to keep up with the hard work of sourcing, scanning, cleaning and curating Kelly's wonderful work.

I've written previously of my (and other people's) recurring night-time dream of wandering into an old bookstore and finding a Pogo book that I had never seen before, though I thought I had completed my collection long ago.

In reality, that dream came true just a few years ago.

I had not made a checklist of Pogo books to check off, but I really thought that I had them all. So when I saw The Pogo Sunday Book on a dusty book shelf, I did an actual double take and poked myself to see if this was one of those dreams.

I don't think the book is all that rare, but I've not seen one before or since the day that I grabbed it up to pay only a few dollars for. It's mostly a reprint of some of the earliest Pogo Sunday strips, heavily edited and in black and white. It was only very recently that I read the intro page by Kelly to realize that the first 10 pages of the book was a 'new' story of 1956 vintage. Looking at it now, I wonder if it was slated to be a story in the Pogo comic books, or 'just' one that Kelly and his assistant George Ward did just for this book.

And it's funny. I haven't had that recurring dream since.

I show the story here for all of you, and especially for Loren!

Merry Easter, Folks!

Welcome back to the Whirled of Kelly! I've missed being here, but life sometimes just gets in the way of living.

A special cyber-friend has encouraged me (well, threatened me) to revive my habit of posting Pogo Sundays on Sunday and whatever other ephemera that smacks of Kelly goodness that I can slip in.

Okay then.

Easter in August, why not. Kelly's holidays were haphazard anyway.

Anonymous, The Magnanimous

I know some of you have said that if it comes to either not cleaning up a Sunday strip or not showing it at all, you'll take it dirty and disheveled. I jes' hate puttin' em out dirty, so I do a hurry clean if I can, which is what I've done here.

Yippies and Paul Krassner were in the spotlight at the time of this strip. Krassner, having been a founder of the Youth International Party (Yippies), was a potent rabble rouser and was famous for prankster activism.

This attorney fox guy looks like Seminole Sam, but isn't. And check out the worm's false nose and 'stache mask in the first panel, before he disappears (maybe squooshed under all that excitement?). And that's a pretty tree, isn't it?

Nothin' Abaft the Foregammon Bowsprit Two Points Off the Starboard Gam

Well, I thought last week's post seemed a bit familiar. Turns out that I posted it quite some time ago, and not realizing it, I scanned and cleaned it again. Sheesh.

Well this week's strip also was posted some time ago, but this time I was savvy enough to find it in my archived files. I'm reposting it here to keep continuity going with the current arc.

To make up for this repeat, I have some nice material to share later this week that was sent over by one of our great Friends-in-Kelly.

Yoo Hoo! M'sieur le Butch!

Since our brick-throwing cat named Butch took leave of the Sundays, I thought it'd be fun to get a glimpse of him over in the dailies and how he spoils Pogo's usual good nature.

I love how Kelly can fit a detailed automobile into a daily panel!

Oh, Mamie Minded Mama . . .

This strip is more like it, Kelly-wise. And the Okefenokee has a Globe Theatre...how cool is that!

This is the last of the arc that I have lined up, so next week we're on to something else. I'm not sure if I have the strips following this one...I would think I have...but I'm too lazy to go through my stacks to check. Lazy, tired, pooped, exhausted...one of those things. I'm going to bed.

Happy Sunday, Kelly Sunday! LLK! And a top of the morning to you, Hun! And hey to A! And cheers to Craig! I appreciate you guys and all the other Pogo-holics!

"The friends I have are the best in all the world!"

Hi guys! This is a Sweet Saturday post of some guy's work that has ripped off Walt Kelly's style, for a children's book no less! I tell you me, what some people won't do!

I . . . what? What's that? You mean? Oh. Oh. Well. That's completely different . . . never mind . . .

It seems that this lovely children's book work IS by Walt Kelly, using the pseudonym Tony Maclay.

Foolishness aside here, I've been searching used bookstores for years for this legendary side-step by Kelly. Never did find it. I saw a few black and white reproductions in fanzines and thought I'd never ever have the chance to see the book in color.  Well, that's where Whirled of Kelly was one of the best obsessions I've ever taken on, because thanks to it, I (and you) have friends-in-Kelly who are willing to share their rare Kelly items, such as "The Downy Duck" by Tony Maclay (psst, Walt Kelly).

Thank you and many handshakes to Richard Davidson, he of great Kelly knowledge, who has been sending over some lovely items, of which this is one. I did a few color edits, but these are really nice scans. Everyone, shake hands with Richard and convey your thanks!

Happy Sweet Saturday!

Dag Grabbit!

I'm going to bed 'early' tonight, so I'm posting this Sunday, Kelly Sunday on Saturday night. This is the last segment of this story arc. The strip following this one has already been posted on this blog somewhere in the distant past.

Actually, to the pain and misery of some of you, I'm going to skip the Sunday, Kelly Sunday postings for at least a coupla weeks. Now don't get too upset. By doing so I will be able to start posting other Kelly material that I haven't taken time to prepare yet. Most of it is pretty special stuff that I don't want getting buried by Sunday after Sunday posting . . .  at least for a while. Also, that will give me a chance to take inventory of what's left of the Sundays stash, because, well, we've posted a lot of strips and sooner or later, sob, we're gonna run out of what I've clipped. I need to figure out just how much longer this can go on. Don't panic yet—let's jes' see what's what.

So, stay 'tooned!

Paradigm of the EX-plicit and/or IM-plicit Exigencies of Parabolic Thought

This arc is finally and rapidly coming to a close—one more week, I think. Then we'll move on to something else. But until then, today is Christmas and I'd like to wish you a merry one!

The Lady Feminists Peace Parade

As some of you know, from my other blog The Pictorial Arts, I'm on an extended leave from blogging. But I just can't see missing a Sunday posting of a Pogo Sunday strip. I wouldn't miss a Sunday, Kelly Sunday unless it was a case of death or taxes, or something like that. I'm posting it on Saturday night, cuz I'll be busy on Sunday morning.

In checking my records, I notice that I haven't posted even one Sunday strip from 1970 yet, so here's the first of those (with 51 more to come, in time). This is from the middle of a pretty long arc (April to October). You know how Kelly wanders all over the map, yet usually has a thread running for months, and you can't quite tell where and when an arc begins or ends. But this particular strip is seemingly unconnected to the arc it's embedded in, so I thought I'd bring it up here, and then when we get to that arc (soon), it won't distract from the flow.

I know the Formth of Joo-lie was nearly a month ago, but in the Whirled of Kelly, time is irrelephant . . . so . . .

Kelly's strips are the loveliest, are they not? Below, a closer look at that sweet brace of doves:

Pooed Out

"Scurrilous lagamuffins, poltroons, spalpeens"—woosh, lotta name-callin' goin' on here.

Even if it is a case of mistaken identity, sorta grisly thinking them boys are eating bun's two heads.
