Storyline: You play Karg, a goblin, and you must free the goblins from the human rulers.

Map and graphics: The map is quite large, but it never gets boring although there is not that much to do. There are some new graphics, such as the orbs, and those look good.

Music: The music used in this D-mod is outstanding.

Good: This D-mod has some nice original things: the seaslimes that attack you when you have control over the ship, the fact that you actually can control the ship and see it sailing across the sea, and the guards that keep on coming out of the castle. There are some nice turns in the story, such as the knight that offers to help. And the story takes a unexpected turn in the last scene. You play a hammer goblin, but also a two headed goblin, and a knight. The fact that most of the map is sea, means that you can actually explore the map per ship. The dialogue to this D-mod is outstanding: it never gets dull, everyone has something to say and you really feel like you are talking to different people.

Not so good: There should be more savebots, especially at the beginning – where, if you get killed, you can start all over - and in the Mage Guild. Several screenlocked screens after each other with hard to defeat monsters at least need some savebots. And there should be some way to frequently heal too. When I used the special weapon when fighting the guards coming out of the castle, the game froze.

Overall: A very nice alternative hero D-mod.

Fit for: Everybody.

A great game! You start in one mine, where rock is blocking passage. You must find the other side , and kill all monsters in the mine. When you defeat all boncas and slimes, you can go out of the mine. There you will find two guys- they will attack you. Then you will be on boar to the goodheart castle. finaly - you will be the king of the earth.

Plot:
----------
Defeat goodheart and his knights, and rule the world. Its will be hard, because he has lots of guards... Also there are some strange scenes, like survive 2 minutes, when guards come and come and come from the castle... Or killing king, when the room is full of his knights....

Graphics:
-------------
There is some new graphics, like orb and enchanted bonca, also all screens are very nice. ...

Items:
---------------
New magic and orbs. I dont know what for orbs are needed, But the new magic is "enchant bonca". It has a minus, because you cant move when you are targeting to cast the spell.

Overall:
---------------
Very good DMOD, realy worth to download.

Wow! Great game George. It seems he has spent a long time producing this D-MOD and this is what will boost my mark for him.
Birth Of An Empire, a GREAT game is unlike any other. I am not sure why, it is most probably just a gut feeling, but I think it stands out in the crowd. Not just for playing as somebody other that Dink, something else... hmmm...

weaknesses: Like everybody else has pointed out, the bonca bug, I think there is a bug fix for this in the miscellaneous section, that will help. The bug is most annoying with wizards. I will mark this with the bug fix however...

Another weakness I encountered was the slow time it takes to die. You are killed, eveything stops for 3 seconds then the dead carcass appears. I'm not too sure about this George

Strongpoints- Everything that isn't in the weaknesses section. The game has everything, the ability to play as a Goblin, an almost perfect storyline that almost perfectly fits into the Dinkiverse (MAIN DINK STORYLINE), new graphics (OK hardly any but still, improvements) cool new, never before heard MIDI's, some funny parts, and some odd parts. Heres an example...

After you defeat the king they ask who shall be king, what will happen etc. Karg walks forward, and says "I will be King of the humans" without any vote or choice whatsoever... heehee!

Overall: I like this D-MOD, and for people stuck with modems the download is short. I recommend this D-MOD to any gamers that want that chunk of extra gameplay.

Full marks with the bug fix - 9.9

Just finished. Very well played. I guess I didn't get to the secret part. Will have to play it again then I guess. Could have used more savebots, especially in the guild house. But overall, great graphics, very good concept. Awesome game.

Plot: Meet Karg. After stone blocked the passage to the other part of the mines, Karg went off to destroy the rock and save the other miners from boncas. Then he went outside and decided that humankind must not rule anymore.
Plot points: 9.6 / 9.9 (keep going with this stuff!)

Music: There's a lot of great music. In one part, I even decided to dance with Karg.
Music points: 9.8 / 9.9 (great music! more music of this kind to d-mods!)

Map: It's a cool idea for a map. That black area between Goblin Land and the Human territory was just SOOOOOO great idea!
Map points: 9.7 / 9.9 (cool map. new ideas always are great!)

Other stuff I'd like to mention: I'd also like to mention that you can with three characters in this game... Karg, two-headed goblin and the assassin. This isn't done in quite many D-Mods...

Big, pointy bugs:
[none]

Smaller, not-so-pointy bugs:
[none]

Small, not-pointy-at-all bugs:
[actually, gotta say none at all]

Overall: 9.7 - Exceptional
It's a great, bugless D-Mod. More of these, please!

It was interesting playing as a goblin (and knight) and the music was cool. Too many lock screens near the end. What are all the orbs for?
My grade an 8.5

This is quite a fun dmod. Its good to play a dmod which isnt all about dink. The summon bonca spell is pretty cool. Also I think the place which has more slimes in one place than in any other dmod was rather fun. I think it was a little too easy to kill the king with the summon bonca spell. I didnt understand the point with the orbs.

Playing as an alternate character is great. Also the goblin soceity is shown to be deeper than simple, violent savages. The combat is very well balanced and playing in a world after Dink's time is fun! The town is even named after him.

One particularly special thing are the fire bonca's and the multiple characters.

Sincerely,

Pluses--You get to play unusual characters, you get to visit a familiar map, you get a cool spell, the (mostly FF2) music is pretty good, the plot is very interesting, and there are unusual combat challenges (like surviving for two minutes while getting a very cool special attack or trying to break through a magical wall while guards appear one by one).
Minuses--The only real negative in this game, which is a major one, is that there are lots and lots and lots of bugs, many of which get you trapped or confused or freeze the game.

Hey, I love the idea! To play as a goblin is truly refreshing, I love to play as the villian, and this was really nice to play as one of my favourite critters in the game. However, I can't really say I understood much of what was going on. All of the ogres and goblins were civilized, and didn't even want to fight when I spoke to one of the warriors. I thought they hungered for blood?

It has some new sprites, such as the orbs and of course, goblin as main player. It has an interesting story too, and it'll keep you busy for a while. An excellent effort!

A DMOD in which you play a variety of characters including Karg the goblin, a two-headed goblin and an assassin. Set 500 years after Dink’s adventures. Karg has to lead the goblins to victory over the greedy human king.

Graphics: a few new ones, some aren’t bad like the ball, orb things, others like the crystal of power are very basic.

Map: no detail whatsoever here, some depth bias problems

Sounds: no new sounds, and some that I thought were inappropriate for characters like the dragon sounds from the original Dink for the wizard/mages

Gameplay: Pretty repetitive mostly. Just work your way through rooms of monsters bashing. Never died. Knight could be used against each other which is annoying.

Bugs: none that I could discover over than the colour of the text for the main character seems to change depending on what he is talking to.

Overall, mildly interesting but in the end - nothing much new. Never did find out what I was meant to do with some orb I found on a hill.

7.9 out of 10

This is a good Alternative Heroes d-mod, and it pioneered a lot of new ground in D-Mod creation (that of Altenative Heroes).
It has some slick new graphics, but a few poorer ones as well. The map just fells.... a little bit ignored, if you ask me. It could have been done so much nicer.
There are also many hardness errors, which spoil the game somewhat. Hardness errors have been the bane of many a d-mod, and this is no exception. Getting trapped by screenlocks it also AMAZINGLY ANNOYING!!
Good midi's, a very good "feel" and a strong plot combine to make this d-mod pretty good, but nothing spectacular.

Birth of an Empire by George

The Good: A new hero(??) Karg(goblin). The Orbs were a nice touch. Some nice scenery, lots of pillbugs. Slimers and boncas plus of course the magicians and the introduction of the Fire Boncas. You also get sail a ship and kill water slimers.

The Bad: Many hardness bugs, many times my screen would freeze, Karg got stuck looking at the Fire Boncas. I did a lot of walking around looking for whatever, when whatever wasn’t there. What’s with the magic?? Didn’t work for me at all. Enough save bots in the game, but a strange ending, as Karg (who kept changing characters) was left just standing there. No music that I could hear, but then again it could be my speakers.

Overall: A game that has left me more confused than the goblin.

Not a bad little d-mod.
I liked playing as a goblin and there were quite a few nice things which are mentioned above. One thing I don't think is mentioned is the ability to change your stats. By pressing 'c' you get a menu which gives you the choice of lifting or lowering your stats by 50 or changing your gold amount (can't think what to do with it though). You can also change your speed and warp yourself to different screens or a different location on the screen. Using this I finished the game easily although I didnt find all the orbs and therefore didnt get inside that room. What's in there anyway? Didn't really like that menu. It just shows you what you can do though.

A pretty good DMod, besides the bugs. Interesting storyline. Good music. Overall a pretty good DMod. I'd be a lot better with more bug fixes than currently avalible, but I finished it, and I guess that's all that really matters in the end.
