Aiming at kids with guns
In the frustrating search for common ground on the issue of gun control, one fact commands attention: There is a gun sitting in nearly half of American households with children. Although most everyone agrees that children should not have unsupervised access to guns, hundreds of children die each year in gun accidents alone.
Getting better in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is fortunate that hospitals, politicians, government workers, and health care advocates have labored to prevent the state from following a distressing national trend: the increase in the number of people who lack health insurance. The success in this state should not obscure the reality that many employers are no longer offering health insurance as a matter of course. New approaches to coverage will be needed to provide insurance that does not depend on the workplace.
Red Sox consternation
Here we go, ready or not, and Red Sox fans are always both. Nervous optimists, we begin Day 1 of the 1999 playoffs with sweaty palms at breakfast and no plans for the evening that do not involve a television set. Is this great or what? Yes, yes, yes - and as scary as standing on a ledge.

It came as no surprise to this reporter when I heard that Jesse Ventura was coming to speak today at Harvard's Kennedy School, because he is the governor of Minnesota, and the K-School takes on all comers (and many of what can be called goers).
Gates did his part - now it's government's turn
(By Derrick Z. Jackson, Globe Columnist)
As buoyant as he is about Bill Gates's $1 billion gift of college scholarships to low-income students of color, Bill Gray is adamant about what the rest of the country has to do.
In her bid to lead India, Sonia Gandhi is challenging history itself
(By Ranjan Gupta)
A battle royal between nationalism and cosmopolitanism is being fought out on the broad canvas of India. Sonia Gandhi, the Italian heir to the Gandhi legacy, is fighting to become prime minister despite being Italian-born. Opposing her is the ruling nationalist BJP alliance, which wants India to make a law, such as the one in the United States, that only a natural-born Indian can become prime minister.
Why an alliance with Buchanan?
(By Lenora B. Fulani)
There are many things that stunned the political establishment about my meeting with Pat Buchanan to discuss his interest in the Reform Party nomination for president.
