January in the Garden

This post 'January in the Garden' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog

January in the Garden...well it is certainly not much green out there.

I’m not a huge fan of the month January; as a matter of fact I would like to press the delete button and make it go away. It is the coldest month of the year here on my latitude. I aim for and always wish to work my garden all year around but I must admit I never manage to do that, but I’m stubborn and I’ll never give up. Some time I'll get my four season garden. (Perhaps I have to move)

This is the month for planning and dreaming and this year is no different. I’ve started to plan the structure of my garden and rotation plan for 2013 and I’ve also order some of the seeds that I need.  Now I just have to wait for Valentine’s Day; that is the day when I start off with my sowing indoors on the veranda - Operation Occupation

You have to do the best of it...here we have some pictures to brighten up even the darkest of winter-days

Hippeastrum - Amaryllis 'Sweet Nymph'

This post Hippeastrum - Amaryllis 'Sweet Nymph' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden

'Sweet Nymph'

Soon January is coming to its end and so it is for all my dear Hippeastrums (Amaryllis). I have had six different varieties this year and they sure have given my so much joy. This is one of the last, the stunning 'Sweet Nymph'

'Sweet Echo, sweetest nymph, that liv'st unseen

Within thy airy shell
By slow Meander's margent green,
And in the violet-embroidered vale
Where the lovelorn nightingale
Nightly to thee her sad song mourneth well:
Canst thou not tell me of a gentle pair
That likest thy Narcissus are?'

John Milton (1608-1674), 'Comus'

'Aphrodite'- Goddess of LOVE, Beauty and Pleasure

This post  'Aphrodite'- Goddess of LOVE, Beauty and Pleasure was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/ Tyra's Garden

Still hibernating...zzz

I have a Goddess in bloom on my window-sill. It is the stunning Hippeastrum Amaryllis 'Aphrodite', named after the Greek goddess of love, beauty and pleasure. This magnificent amaryllis has been 'in floribus' for some days now and I just cannot take my eyes from it. Double pale pink almost white flowers with accentuated edges. Thank you 'Aphrodite' for brighten up even the darkest of days in January.

And now some in my native tongue.

'Exotic Star' - Amaryllis, Hippeastrum

This post 'Exotic Star' - Amaryllis, Hippeastrum was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden

Winter flowers - My January blooms on the windowsills are all the different Amaryllises or should I call them by their botanical name, Hippeastrums

This one is called Exotic Star  (Gracilis Amayllis - Hippeastrum) and it sure looks very Exotic, don't you agree? I planted this bulb in late October and just before Christmas the first flower opened and revealed it's Exotic beauty. It is now the 2nd of January and it is still 'in floribus'

"For many years there was confusion amongst botanists over the generic names Amaryllis and Hippeastrum, one result of which is that the common name "amaryllis" is mainly used for cultivars of this genus, which are widely used as indoor flowering bulbs. The generic name Amaryllis applies to bulbs from South Africa, usually grown outdoors." Wikipedia

With a Scent och Lemon and Saffron

I just want to show you this remarkable out of the ordinary tulip, not like any other in my mixed tulip bouquet. It does not really look like a tulip more like a Peony with its feathery leaves and it is fragrant like my white Peonies too, a scent of lemon and saffron, very interesting indeed. Name? Unfortunatly no name but it looks like a Mondial double tulip although Mondial is more white in the colour. We still have an amazing and beautiful winter scene outside the window but frankly we are all a bit fed up with all the snow and cold weather. Stay warm/ Tyra

Mauve Taupe

Magical Pale 'Mauve Taupe' Pinks

Pale pink sun trying to break through... but no. Beautiful icicles in pale pink hanging from the roof some of them are almost a metre long and some pale mauve pink tulips at the end.

"Mauve (pronounced /ˈmoʊv/ (British), rhymes with "grove"; from the French form of Malva 'mallow' is a pale lavender-lilac color, one of many in the range of purples. Mauve is more grey and more blue than a pale tint of magenta would be. Many pale wildflowers called "blue" are actually mauve. Sometimes mauve can be considered a dirty pink or a shade of purple. Mauve can also be described as pale violet. Another name for this color is mallow. source: Wikipedia - Mauve

This last photo is an old photo from the winter of 2006, the frosty roses of ice on my greenhouse windows.

Friday

December blooms - Hyacinthus orientalis

Today we have had a terrible winter storm with up to gale force wind and heavy snowfall. It was a complete chaos in the traffic with a total stand still for the busses. Luckily I could convince my colleagues that they could cope without me and my boss said yes. As a result I have had a wonderful day baking a loaf of fruit bread, taking a long bath, doing some tidying among clothes that I never wear, making a pie for dinner and creating decorative Christmas labels for my Christmas gift.

Now to the blooms...it is Blomming Friday at Katarina's place

The Hyacinth is my number one among the favourite winter flowers, December blooms anyway... I say this now just wait until the Hippeastrum flowers are 'in floribus' then I'm sure I'll say the same about the 'Amaryllis'. Anyway no Christmas without the Hyacinths. I'm so glad that non in my family is allergic to it.

Blue Hyacinth in the soft daylight of December.

Today it is the day before the day before the day...before the day.

Winter solstice! Sing Halleluja

Paperwhite - Narcissus papyraceus - Tazetter

I'm continuing on the theme winter-flowering plants, December blooms that have the ability to brighten up even the darkest of days. Last week I got two bulbs of Paperwhites from a friend and now they are 'in floribus', this delicate and elegant bulbous plant native to the Mediterranean region and it is very fragrant too.

~~~
Så här års gläds man verkligen av alla underbara blommor som blommar just nu i advent. Dessa små Tazetter är ju helt sagolika, enkla och på samma gång sofistikerade också doftar det ljuvligt också.
~~~

Namn: Tazett (Narcissus papyraceus)
Familj: Amaryllidaceae, amaryllisväxter.
Ursprung: Sydeuropa, Medelhavsområdet, Kina, Japan.

Winter Flowers - Phalaenopsis

We have now lit candle number two and we are entering the second week of Advent, this wonderful time that comes to an end on Christmas Day.

I wonder... what kind of flowers do you have in your windows during December?

On my windowsill I have a lot of orchids and this one has such a pretty colour, almost Christmas red. I cannot think of a winter flowering plant that is more durable and that flowers for such a long time as the Phalaenopsis.

Tips and ideas how to care for your Phalaenopsis,
about - watering, fertilizer, light, potting etc.

What to do after the blooming is over. After care.

It's Blooooming Friday! - Blomming Fredag

© This post was originally uploaded and written by Tyra at the blog Tyra's Garden http://waxholm.blogspot.com/

.
Hip, hip, Hurrah, Hippeastrum

I cannot possibly think of a better way to start this year than with these magnificent flowers. It’s Bloooming Friday again and I give you a shower or rather a bang-boom of ‘flowering fireworks’.

...

We call it Amaryllis but it is a Hippeastrum...

Hippeastrum is a genus of about 70–75 species and 600+ hybrids and cultivars of bulbous plants in the family Amaryllidaceae, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas from Argentina north to Mexico and the Caribbean. Some species are grown for their large showy flowers. These plants are popularly but erroneously known as Amaryllis, an African genus in the same family. Wikipedia

...

Blooming Friday - Orchidaceae Phalaenopsis - AN ALIEN?

© This post was originally uploaded and written by Tyra
at the blog Tyra's Garden http://waxholm.blogspot.com

...

Today I join Katarina from Roses and Stuff with a post on the theme Blooming Friday!

I start my first Blooming Friday with an Orchid. Tadaa...

The Phalaenopsis

The Phalaenopsis belongs to the huge Orchidaceae family and the Phalaenopsis have some 60 species. Some are usually called Moth orchids because they are suppose to bear a resemblance to moths in flight. I think this Phalaenopsis looks like an alien of some kind. I suppose that is why we like them so much they are exiting, exotic, beautiful and a liiittle bit frightening.

This is also the flower I have in my Advent candleholder this year.

See more ' Blooming Friday' posts here
