Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. Toil the Soil - Kitchen Garden and Fleamarket Gardening

This post Toil the Soil - Kitchen Garden and Fleamarket Gardening was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden / Tyras Trädgård

In this issue you meet Charlotta,  Marie and me. Kitchen Garden and Fleamarket Gardening

Rubbish or treasure? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

So very true!

"It was actually rather by chance the whole project started. In 2002 the family found 36 very old windows in an attic, they dated from 1901. My husband thought it would be a great idea to throw the ‘junk’ away but I certainly disagreed with that, I didn’t like that idea at all. Now my resourceful mind started to work intensively. Those window had a history, they were beautiful, single glass windows with a lot of charm and in a fairly good condition too. It didn’t take long until the thought of building greenhouse of them begun to progress"...read more in Toil the Soil

Scents

This post 'Scents' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden

Scents!

Hm...

I'm thinking roses in my garden, dandelions in the field, lily-of-the-valley in the glade of the forest, honeysuckle just by my door...the list goes on forever. It is hard to choose one scent for this weeks theme.
I found this picture with both fragrant roses and raspberries in it, now this is a lot of scents in this picture. I would love to sit at that table today!

Finns det något mer ljuvligt en sommarens bär och en skål med blandade doftande rosor.

I wish you all a lovely weekend.

Deserted and Abandoned

This post "Deserted and Abandoned" was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden

What is this?

 NO blooms on Blooming Friday!

This weeks theme is Deserted...

and this is my thoughts in the matter.

The wear and tear of time has left its marks, but aging has its charm. I love it and I often say "perfect is boring". Some of the things in my mosaic will be rediscovered and brought back to life while others will fall into a longer and deeper sleep.

My greenhouse in Tyra's Garden is just deserted for a very short time, it is hibernating in the month of January and waiting for reawakening - soon the sun will come and bring it back to life. The wines in my celler however are unfortunately ruined, the winter has been too cold. The cold and deserted statue in the Garden at Gysinge bruk will soon once again look out over a green and beautiful park.

Övergivna - men kanske inte för alltid. Snart är våren och sommaren här och då väcks det temporärt övergivna till liv igen. Dock...en del saker faller bara in i en djupare sömn. Trevligt helg på er alla!

I wish you all a great weekend!

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

This post The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden

I have a dream…

The photo in the center of my fantasy collage is a 16th century engraving by Dutch artist Martin Heemskerck
"Hanging Gardens of Babylon" and all the others are from Kew Garden U.K.

... and that is to visit the Hanging Gardens of Babylon

I know I can't...but

Since the very first time I heard of The Hanging Gardens of Babylon I have had a desire to go there. I know of course that it is utterly ridiculous and totally impossible but I can always travel in my fantasy.

“The gardens were supposedly built by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II around 600 BC. He is reported to have constructed the gardens to please his homesick wife, Amytis of Media, who longed for the trees and fragrant plants of her homeland Persia. The gardens were destroyed by several earthquakes after the second century BC” wikipedia

During a visit at Kew Gardens I took some photographs that I’m using for this post's fantasy collage.

This week’s theme in Blooming Friday is Dreams. Go to Katarina’s place Roses and stuff and find out what more dreams are out there.

But first…Don’t be a stranger my friend, write something.

Calamondin and Cerula vinula

This post Calamondin and Cerula vinula was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden.

Beauty and The Beast

The Beauty, my Calamondin tree had a visit this summer of a beast or at least shall we say a beastly looking thing. The visitor was a larvae of the Puss moth. An odd looking little fellow don’t you think?

 The Puss Moth
Scientific name: Cerula  or Cerura vinula, (I have seen both spellings) wingspan from 65 to 80mm, caterpillars feed on willows and poplars. its natural habitat is woods, parks and gardens. The puss moth is a creamy-white or greyish-white moth with lovely grey marbled markings. The abdomen features black and white stripes. The name comes from the cat-like fur all over the body. Puss in Swedish = kiss in English :-)

Calamodin
"The juice of the calamondin can be used like lemon or lime to make refreshing beverages, to flavor fish, to make cakes, marmalades, pies, preserves, sauces and to use in soups and teas." read more Calamondin - The Most Versatile Citrus

Well what do you know…it is Friday again and it is Blooming Friday here in Tyra’s Garden.

This weeks theme: VISITORS

A great thank you to our host, dear Katarina, do visit Roses and stuff, there you find more participant from all over the world.

Water for Body and Soul

This post Water for Body and Soul was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden

Water for Body and Soul

Born in the sign of Taurus my element is Earth and that is an element that I of course as a gardener just L.O.V.E. But I couldn’t live without the water, nor my garden. What would life be without water?...Now I just do not mean pure water for my (65% water content) body, I mean water for my soul. I need to be close to water, see water, feel water and if possible and even better to hear water - Thank God and I'm very grateful for it, that I'm fortunate to live close to the water and that I live in a country with a lot of water.

However the only water features that I got in my garden is a birdbath in one of the rocks and a large 19th Century Copper Bucket on an iron stand. I think this specific type of old bucket are called a laundry copper or just 'copper'. I have it in the greenhouse for watering my greenhouse plants and to even out the temperature between day and night.

Whenever I accidently break off a flower out in the potager this is where I place it, in the ‘copper’. This flower I would like to call my Water-lily Dahlia as I think it would be a suitable name, but it is actually a Semi Cactus Dahlia, I think it is ‘Snow Princess’ but I’m not sure.

and now some Water Music

by Georg Friedrich Händel, It premiered on 17 July 1717 and it is still great!

Well what do you know…it is Friday again and consequently it is Blooming Friday here in Tyra’s Garden.

This weeks theme: WATER

Backlit Photographs of my Garden.

Against-the-light

It is not that often we garden people take pictures with backlight in our garden but it is rather charming and perhaps we should use this photo technique a bit more frequently.

I read an article in takegreatpicture.com  about the backlight technique.
" Backlight is certainly not the easiest type of light with which to work, but taming it is a lot less difficult than you think." read the whole article Backlight Busters by Russ Burden

 My greenhouse on fire

These photos are taken in November a few years ago, I think they are pretty nice, it is a calmness in them that I like, perfact the backlight effect helped to enhance that feeling.

Herbs and Kale in a cold greenhouse

It is Blooming Friday again my friends and the theme for this week is against-the-light. And this is my contribution, if you pop over to Katarinas place Roses and stuff there you can meet more participants from all over the globe. Enjoy! I end this post with a little Dahlia. It is a Dahlia Mignon 'Firebird' with backlight of course.

Wild, Beautiful...and Bad

This post 'Wild and Beautiful' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden

The Scarabaeidae Cetonia aurata.

By tomorrow half of the month October has already passed and I must say it has been wonderful so far. Sunshine almost every day and up to now no frost here in Vaxholm, I still have my Dahlias in bloom and chilies in the greenhouse! Time flies fast and it is Friday again and once again we visit Katarina in her blog Roses and Stuff, it is Blooming Friday and this week theme is 'Wild and beautiful'. I glanced through my garden picture and found this little fellow.

I think the Cetonia aurata is extraordinary beautiful, but I know it is a bad - wild, beautiful and bad. Still I like it when it comes into my garden for a quick visit, as long as 'he' doesn't bring all the family.

UPDATE! What have I done, it's not that bad at all! I guess it is just some gardener that has complained that their lawn has been 'ruined' and plant roots been eaten by the Cetonia auratas larvae. I've killed several of these...now I'm the bad one :-) Read more about the Cetonia here in The Natural History Museum site - Cetonia aurata - Rose chafer
~ ~ ~

I just have to add a flower as well. One of the last, don't know the name of it. This rose was one of those cheap pots of roses they sell in the local grocery store. I have had it for a few year now and it seems to like it in my potager.

- I wish you all a lovely weekend in your garden.

PRIMULA - The First

The First - Primula

A bit pale from the tough winter and the lack of bright light...

Who isn't ? I am!

"Primula (pronounced /ˈprɪmjʊlə/)[1] is a genus of 400–500 species of low-growing herbs in the family Primulaceae. They include primrose, auricula, cowslip and oxlip. Many species are grown for their ornamental flowers. They are native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere, south into tropical mountains in Ethiopia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and in temperate southern South America.Perennial primulas bloom mostly during the spring; their flowers can be purple, yellow, red, pink, or white. Generally, they prefer filtered sunlight. Many species are adapted to alpine climates." Primula wikipedia

This is the first Primula Auricula for the season, this little fellow is planted in a pot and has been in the greenhouse the whole cold winter and now in late March it's in floribus.

Family: Primulaceae    Genus: Primula    Species: P. auricula

Helleborus 'Pink Frost' - Spring in the Greenhouse

Spring in the the Greenhouse

The snow is slowly melting and the sun is getting more bright for each day. This week has been just wonderful with all the sun oozing down onto my grounds. The greenhouse and I loves it! To Taste Tomas Edison or Not...

...that is the question.

'Dahlia blooms are showy, but it’s their edible tubers that make them an excellent addition to kitchen gardens.'  ROB CARDILLO

To those of you who have asked what colorful and somewhat showy flower I got in my hand on my Facebook avatar it's a Dahlia. Dahlia 'Thomas Edison'. I know that the native americans (Aztec) used the dahlia tubers for food, but I have not tried them ... yet. I can would image that the structure would be similar to the structure of water chestnut and I've read that they taste is very different depending on how and where they grow.
When I once asked my vegetable garden guru Lena Israelsson she said that she had tasted them, but... did not think they were particularly good, we have so many other things to eat therefore the dahlias she could definitely be without. Very wise woman, but as I read this article Edible Dahlias I became a bit curious... hm this summer I'll probably have a go and try some different varieties. I grow so many dahlias in the garden kitchen already and it surely would  be fun to use them in the kitchen as well and not just have them for their beauty's sake and to attract insects to my potager.

Learn more about edible dahlias and how to make a Dahlia Salad, recipe in this article. Mother Earth News
