Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. BEGONIA in the greenhouse

This post was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden/ Tyras Trädgård

Today's flower is a Begonia

I grow most of my begonias in my greenhouse. They really thrive in the humid, warm greenhouse in the shade of all my chillie plants. I once, now many years ago, saw Begonias grow in the shade, on the ground under the trees in Mexico. White small-flowering Begonias in the wild, it was amazingly beautiful sight. I will never forget it and now when I have them in my greenhouse I think of that extraordinary trip to Mexico every time I attend to my little flowers.

Cultivation of Begonia  "Most are forest understory plants and require bright shade; few will tolerate full sun, especially in warmer climates. In general, begonias require a well-drained growing medium that is neither constantly wet nor allowed to dry out completely."

Flowers of August - Zinnia and Dahlia

This post 'Flowers of August - Zinnia and Dahlia' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog TyrasTrädgård/Tyra's Garden

Today's flowers from my potager are Zinnia and Dahlia. I think, both are very stunning flowers, true eye-catchers in the garden. They are typical August flowers for me. Both this Dahlia 'Thomas Edison'and Zinnia 'Elegance' are the same height as myseft! I had to climp up on a stool to reach up and take this photo.

Photo: Dahlia 'Thomas Edison' and Zinnia 'Elegance'/ Tyra

The Zinnia is from seed and was planted in April and the Dahlia is from tubers that I've had for some years now and was replanted in fertile soil in last May.

Pithari - a new centrepiece for the garden.

This post "Passiflora" was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden

Last week I paid a visit to one best garden centres we have here in Stockholm - Slottsträdgården Ulriksdal. My Garden-budget is limited at the moment so I had to choose carefully where to put my money. After carefully looking around for an hour or so I made my decision… I must say that I got home with some really nice things. One old fashioned Geranium in pale pink ‘Prince Nicolai’ and this Passiflora- Passion flower, isn’t just wonderful? I don’t know why but I think of aliens when I look at it.
I also found a new centrepiece for my yard - A handmade antique traditional terracotta jar from Cyprus, now this one really blow the budget but I just could leave without it. Placed in the stone yard just outside the greenhouse door it has now found its new home and every morning when I enter the garden I smile - it is to beautiful !

PITHARI - Like a jewel in the yard.
My "new" eye-catcher... an antique, handmade, earthenware jar from Cyprus.

Happy Gardening!

I wish you all a lovely weekend/ Tyra

Water lily - Nymphaea 'Rhonda Kay'

This post Water lily - Nymphaea 'Rhonda Kay' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyras trädgård/Tyra's Garden

I was going through some pictures this morning and found this simple yet stunning water lily. It is called 'Rhonda Kay' and I found her in Kew Gardens.

'Rhonda Kay' at Kew Gardens. The Nymphaeaceae are aquatic, rhizomatous herbs.

About: Mr Landon the father of the "Rhonda Kay" Waterlily.

"Mr. Landon, a renowned waterlily hybridizer and plant explorer, has assembled a collection that contains 90 percent of the world's known wild species of waterlilies (about 85, he said) and more than 4,000 hybrids. (Most are growing or stored, as seeds or bulbs, at his farm in Miles, about 20 miles northeast of here, or by growers in three states and in Europe.)

Largely self-taught -- he minored in botany while earning a degree in industrial engineering -- he is known around here as the Indiana Jones of the waterlily world. He nonchalantly tells of braving snake-infested waters, escaping the snapping jaws of crocodiles and the like, in his search, from Amazonia to Zanzibar, for some rare wildling once thought extinct.

And every year, thousands of enthusiasts from all over the world come to see these lilies, which Mr. Landon tends through an $80,000 contract with the city. San Angelo is also home to the International Waterlily Preservation Repository, a seed bank Mr. Landon established in 2007. " Read the whole article here.  From an article in the New York Times about Mr Landon  For Waterlilies, An Odd Refuge

Mr. Rudbeckia 'Magnus'

Who is the Man - He is the Man

Hip, Hip, Hurrah!

Happy Birthday! Mr. Magnus B. Nilsson
The famous Swedish nurseryman that celebrate his 105th birthday today.

The gardener and breeder who is the "father" to one of my favourite perennial flower, the Rudbeckia ‘Magnus’ Echinacea purpurea. The Rudbeckia ‘Magnus’ was the plant of the year in 1998 both here in Sweden as well as abroad. I just love this perennial coneflower with the most fascinating colour combination.  The rusty centre combined with the pale cerise coloured silk-like petals. It is not just we people that enjoyes Rudbeckia ‘Magnus’, so does the butterflies and bees too, they love it.

Cyclamen persicum - November blooms

This post "Cyclamen persicum  - November blooms" was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden

This is an ornamental pot-flower that is perfect for our November weather conditions. Especially this November, we still have this wonderful mild weather. I really love it. It reminds me of the winters I spent in UK; rather wet, mild and foggy. We haven’t had Jack Frost here at all! Thank you - and that is the way the Cyclamen and I like it to be until… Christmas. Although we do, of course, like it to be a white Christmas.

SKÖTSELRÅD-CYKLAMEN från Blomsterfrämjandet

Svenskt namn: Cyklamen ~ Latinskt namn: Cyclamen persicum.

Shadow

Red Hot Chili Pepper - Harvest in my potager - Begonia in the greenhouse

Fototriss - 'Three of a kind' and this weeks theme is SHADOW

Without the shadows playing over the objects, the photos are dead. Shadows is just as important as the light in a picture. Its the cooperation between shadow and light that is absolutely essential for a good result. Its an art to be able to see when to catch the moment.

Tyra

Happy Faces of May

Today's Pictures - Happy Faces of May.

Viola

This is the time of year my garden luxuriate with pansies. I have them everywhere, I have my "happy faces" in the greenhouse as well as in the potager. I think this one is stunning, very spectacular, almost gross.

After an amazing and truely enchanting April I must say that May has started really bad, for the season, it is frightfully cold. But I'm glad to say that they predict better weather for the coming weekend. Let's hope so!

...and now to a less "vulgar" Viola, a very sofisticated lady in black.

Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden  -  ABC Wednesday and the letter is I

I is for IRIS

I got these wonderful photos from Hugh Stout Jr. at the Stout Gardens at Dancingtree
Hugh and Jennifer Stout have been growing, showing and hybridizing both daylilies and iris for over ten years. Hugh is both an exhibition/garden judge with the American Iris Society as  well as a garden judge for the American Hemerocallis Society. He is also past president of the Oklahoma Horticultural Society and Oklahoma Iris Society.

and at last to Bombay Sapphire...now why is it here among all the lovely Irises?

Well, I read this:

The Irises got these aromatic rhizomes...

"Rhizomes of the German Iris (I. germanica) and Sweet Iris (I. pallida) are traded as orris root and are used in perfume and medicine, though more common in ancient times than today. Today Iris essential oil (absolute) from flowers are sometimes used in aromatherapy as sedative medicines. The dried rhizomes are also given whole to babies to help in teething. Gin brands such as Bombay Sapphire use orris root and sometimes iris flowers for flavour and colour." wikipedia

Cheers! or

I  is for Imekatigigta...

this is how they say cheers in Greenland.

Gerbera - Gerbera Daisies

This post 'Gerbera - Gerbera Daisies' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius- Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/ Tyra's Garden

Gerbera - A plant for the health.

Well, I don't mean for you to eat it. Nevertheless Gerbera Daisies cleans the air and makes me happy.

Gerbera is this extremely pretty ornamental plants from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is almost too perfect, but still I do love it. Whenever I need a dose of colour to brighten up my day I go for the Gerbera it always make me smile. The Gerbera plants have high evaporation rates and very good ability to reduce levels of chemical gases in the air making it a good plant for the health. The Gerbera likes the soil to be kept slightly moist; it should be neither dry nor wet. Do add plant nutrient to potted Gerberas about every two weeks from spring to autumn.

- It was named in honour of the German botanist and naturalist Traugott Gerber († 1743) who travelled extensively in Russia and was a friend of Carolus Linnaeus. Wikipedia

I read something more about this very popular Gerbera, the meaning of Gerbera flowers in a guide of flowers and gardening. The Flower Expert

"The meanings of gerbera flowers stem from those attributed to the general daisy family. These meanings include innocence and purity, and daisies are also a classic symbol of beauty. However, the gerbera variety holds an added meaning of cheerfulness, which stems from the assortment of colors available."
