Soldered Necklaces

Look what I learned how to make! Soldered necklaces! I never thought I could solder without burning myself, but, it can be done!

For my first necklace, I made it using an image of Frida Kahlo and some of her artwork, as well as an old postage stamp from Mexico. It was easier than I thought.

I will post a tutorial soon, but until then, enjoy the pics!

And here's one of Tulah acting as a lovely model.

I can't wait to make more! Christmas gifts, anyone??

Pedestal Jewelry Boxes

For Christmas, my six-year-old cousin got a vanity table, that she loved. So I decided that for her birthday, I would make her some jewelry boxes to go on her vanity table. They turned out so cute!

Here is a picture of some of the supplies you will need: Some candlesticks; some acorn dowel heads (which will become the handle for the lid); a little box (I used 3 different sizes). You will also need some glue, craft paint, and wooden circles (not pictured below, I will show you later).

Paint everything. I used a fun purple, pink, orange, and blue color. This is a great way to customize the look for the gift recipient, use her favorite colors, or make it match her bedroom or vanity.

Then assemble it all together and glue it. I used hot glue to put it all together.

In this picture, you can see I added polka-dots, and notice the wooden disc at the bottom. They came in a package in the unfinished wood section at the store. I thought I took a picture of them, but I guess I didn't! Anyway, that is also just glued on.

I love the "chunky" blue one!

Here's the finished grouping of three. This little girl is going to *love* to store all of her beads and trinkets in her boxes!

I have also seen these boxes in heart shapes, star shapes, bigger, smaller, etc., so have fun playing around with the variations. I also thought they might make a great alternative to a tooth fairy pillow! I'm sure there are endless possibilities.

I will be linking up to these great parties!

Dollar Tree Jewelry Organizer

With the last week of school and tons of grading to do, I didn't have much time to craft, so I thought I would post what I wrote up for a blog swap I did recently with Scraps and Scribbles, just in case you missed it. :o)

Today I am excited to be sharing with you a fun tutorial on organizing jewelry for a super-cheap price!

Up until recently, the weather in Michigan has been anything but Spring-like, but, I have still felt the need for a little spring cleaning. When I walked into my bedroom, I was faced with this:

My jewelry was in a huge, tangled pile!! Yup, those are even a few necklaces hanging over the tv! Part of me never wants to buy new jewelry because I know I don't take care of it the way I should. Something had to be done.

On a recent trip to The Dollar Tree, I found these cork boards:

I decided to paint them Heirloom White to match the moulding in my room.

I also painted some cup-hooks heirloom white as well.

I trimmed scrapbook paper to fit into the frame of the corkboard. I had to gently push it to fit into the opening. It took some finesse, but with a little patience, I got it to work out.

I screwed the cup-hooks into the bottom of the frame.

Hang 'em on the wall and then organize that jewelry!

What I like about this idea is if I ever get sick of the blue paper, or if I repaint the room, all I have to do is cut new scrapbook paper out and I can switch it up!

Looks like I have some room for more jewelry... maybe I can finally buy some now that I have a place to safely store it!

I will be posting at these lovely parties.

Decorated Dress Form

My mom and Aunt had the idea to make decorated dress forms. When they asked me if I would like to join in, even though I had no idea what to use it for, I agreed. (Hello!- -addicted to crafting much?) After we finished (it took two days), I absolutely loved mine!

This is a LONG tutorial, full of pictures. If you want to see the end product, or if you hate the suspense, scroll down!

We started with table-top dress forms from Hobby Lobby. I have seen them at Michael's and JoAnn's too. We used gesso to create a nice, even base color.

We then used some strips of watercolor paper that my Grandma had previously painted on and we tore them down the middle. We did this because we wanted them thinner- you could have whatever size you want. I didn't cut them because I like the ripped look.

Some of these strips of paper we thought would look cool if we embossed them with our CuttleBug machine. Here is a picture of cute Grandma learning what the CuttleBug does.

After that, our gesso was dry, so we painted our dress forms. I chose the color pink just for the fun of it. You could use any color. I also wanted a metallic look so the craft paint I used was a pink metallic.

I also added some other colors lightly here and there.

From there I ripped some images (found online) of old tape measures to match the already ripped water color paper. You can use real ones if you have them! This step is optional.

After the paint dried, I ripped tissue paper and modge podged it to the dress form in various places.

Then, to add more decoration, I glued little diamond shapes in various places on the dress form.

I also glued little heart-shaped sequins into the middle of my diamonds.

Using iron-on transfer paper that we printed from the computer, I chose words, names, dates, and addresses that are special to me and printed them in a pretty font. Then I ironed them onto a scrap of fabric.

Rip or cut the fabric into strips (just like earlier with the watercolor paper and the measuring tape images).

Now you are finally ready to start gluing on your dress form's skirt!

And keep gluing and building layer after layer of watercolor paper, fabric, measuring tape, lace, ribbon, anything!

Eventually, it will end up the way you want it. Code for: put as much as you like on/in her skirt. I think at this point I looked over at my Aunt and caught her talking to her dress form telling her how lovely she is.

Here are the three "ladies" well on their way to bea-u-ti-ous!! (Not to mention that messy table!)

Then start to embellish her skirt. Use buttons, paper cut-outs (hearts, diamonds), tags, anything! We cut out some tags from an old poetry book using our Cricut. Here is a close up of my embellishments, sorry about the shadow of my head.

We attached and glued the tags to the waist with pretty fibers.

I also used the same fiber to wrap a "scarf" around her neck.

I wrapped the same fiber (along with others) around her waist. I finished it off with an antique broach.

Here they are all completed!

I think I am going to either put mine in my bedroom to hang jewelry on, or put her in my craft room. I can't decide!
