RVA Noise is proud to present Blue Nine Fest. This event will be a
memorial and a tribute to Bobbie and will showcase a variety of
performers, all of which were friends of hers and wanted to express
their grief and sadness as well as celebrate the life and spirit of
Bobbie in their own unique ways.

Sunday night sees a significant gathering of the more punk-based experimental noise scene here in Richmond; sadly, it’s to commemorate a tragedy. Local noise musician Bobbie Peters, who performed under the name Blue Nine, passed away earlier this year, and their many friends in the local scene are gathering to celebrate their life with the sort of harsh noise they loved. Whether or not you knew Bobbie, this is an important event for the RVA noise scene, one that is worth checking out as much for the chance to engage with the full spectrum of the local scene as for the opportunity to memorialize a fallen compatriot.
There are way too many artists on this bill to explore even half of them to the extent they deserve, but some that merit special mention include Brown Piss, the damaged electronic harshness generated by Suppression/Mutwawa/Chaotic Noise Productions mastermind Jason Hodges as a solo performer; Scant, the harsh, foreboding chaos generated by mid-Atlantic noise renaissance man Matt Boettke; Coteries, the enveloping atmospheric noise terror of Van Ficken; and Eric Tomillon’s monster of harsh noise, Fake Object. But honestly, everyone who’s anyone in Richmond’s experimental noise scene is here, so if you need a crash course, this is your perfect opportunity to get one. It’s a shame it had to happen for such a sad reason. - Marilyn Drew Necci

WASTELAND JAZZ UNIT ( Cincinnati,Ohio)
Wasteland Jazz Unit has been bringing their brand of Borbetomagus fueled honkin' for over 10 years now and have been described as taking "free-jazz instrumentation (clarinet and sax) and using it to crack open the gates of hell by manipulating them using electronic signal processing and overloaded FX, unleashing skull-scraping eruptions of high-end reed abuse and extreme skronk that threaten to send blood geysering from your eyeballs."
NPR, after seeing "The Unit" play the New Atlantis Festival in 2010, explained that after clearing out half of what little audience there was through "screeching walls of feedback and distortion emanating from their stacks of amplifiers and reeds was enough to crust over your eyes in dried blood" that anyone remaining were "immediate converts."

DEVELOPER (Dayton, Ohio)
Developer is the cut-up noise project of Matthew Reis from Dayton, OH. Reis has been a staple of the Ohio noise scene since the early 00's with his group Yes, Collapse and solo project Teeth Collection. Reis is also the sole operator of Factotum Tapes. His current project, Developer, "takes Gysin's cut up techniques and musique concrete tactics" and pushes them to their furthest point.

KEVIN GREENSPON
A touring veteran of fragmented scenes that stretch from Los Angeles into parts unknown and overlooked, Kevin Greenspon has performed hundreds of shows across the USA in venues ranging from art museums to abandoned naval bases.
Using multiple video projectors, tape machines and synth programs that react to each other, Greenspon’s live performances of contemplative ambient techno create an immersive audio-visual environment and ethereal atmosphere for self-reflection.
For the past decade, he has run the Bridgetown Records label, releasing albums of all genres for like-minded peers from the deep reaches of the underground each season.
“Greenspon elevates the practice of label-heading to a higher stratum by musically participating in his own scene — or, perhaps more accurately, serving as a shared focal point for dozens of loosely connected scenes across America. His exhaustive tour schedule, which tends to place him somewhere around the 100-shows-a-year benchmark, connects him with more nooks of the US underground on a regular basis than anyone should ever be able to keep track of in their brains. His tightly synced audio-visual sets, which time abstract visual expanses to the drifting layers of his synth-based compositions, have captivated normies and heads alike in an untold number of basement spaces or DIY living rooms.” - Maxwell Allison, Tiny Mix Tapes
J HAMILTON ISAACS
Denver based artist J Hamilton Isaacs has been making experimental music under the moniker dugoutcanoe since 2006. Modular synthesizers, Midi sequencing and sampling hardware are used to create meta-musical sound collage cacophonies to facilitate transcendental deep listening experiences. Drawing inspiration from works such as Steve Reich's Phase Music or the lush drones of Phil Niblock, to the relentless fury of Balinese gamelan; Isaacs creates original compositions that betray their foundational structure of decades steeped in the American DIY underground.

GARDENER
Under the name Gardener, Richmond, VA-based Dash Lewis uses a modular synthesizer, effects pedals, and his own voice to create intricately layered, rhythmically complex slabs of trance-inducing psychedelia deeply influenced by German kosmiche music of the 1970s, mid-career Beach Boys, and spiritual jazz. A frequent performer, Lewis has toured or shared the stage with The War on Drugs, Meg Mulhearn, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Fred Thomas, Benoit Pioulard, Jeff Zeigler, Mary Lattimore, Suuns, Brian Case (Disappears), Tashi Dorji, Mind Over Mirrors, and many more.

Event Pick: International Noise Conference at 25 Watt - Style Weekly
From: http://www.styleweekly.com/richmond/event-pick-international-noise-conference-at-25-watt/Content?oid=2347005
By Chris Bopst
By Chris Bopst
Never in the history of civilization have there been so many
ways to manipulate sound. Purists tend to dismiss music made with the
numerous contemporary mediums, but I doubt 20th-century experimentalists
John Cage, Harry Partch, Raymond Scott or Sun Ra would have felt that
way. I’m confident that they would have embraced and thrilled with a
world of ever-increasing creative possibilities. A wide range of
21st-century audio adventurers will take the stage at the 25 Watt for
the International Noise Conference on Wednesday, July 6. Presented by
Rat Bastard and the Laundryroom Squelcher, the night of combative
cacophonies features 15-minute performances by analog and digital
provocateurs Stabbed in the Face, Crack Bytch, Yoga Demon, Flesh Control
and many others. Definitely not for the faint of heart, doors open for
the system of assaults at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. 25wattrva.com.

"In 2004, cult South Florida producer, Frank “Rat Bastard” Falestra, hosted the inaugural International Noise Conference (INC) at Churchill’s Pub in Miami, Florida. Around 40 acts - all from the United Sates - performed over the course of three days.
12 years later, the conference proper has expanded to a full week, every major city in Florida hosts pre- and post-shows, and the total number of bands is but one of myriad statistics that confirms INC is a consistent institution in the often chaotically transient world of do-it-yourself underground experimental music. In the course of its expansion, Falestra has justified the global scope of his festival’s once seemingly ironic namesake by featuring provocative avant-garde performers from all over the world, and by expanding into annual touring editions that have traveled through five continents..."

RVA Noise Fest V videos hit the web - RVA Mag
The fifth annual RVA Noise Fest took place a few weeks back, and for those who missed it, you're in luck (at least a little bit). A number of decent quality videos from the event have emerged and nows your chance to catch up on some of the best noise, harsh noise, power electronics, ambient, drone, synth, techno, free jazz, no wave and performance art available in the area.
The actual event took place over two days at both Strange Matter and Gallery 5, and it was a veritable marathon of short, back to back performances by local noise, electronic, experimental and otherwise unclassifiable musicians.

Event Pick: RVA Noise Fest V at Strange Matter and Gallery5 - Style Weekly
“Please God, make it stop” noise to some is “Yes Lord, turn it up louder” sound to others. Take the RVA Noise Fest, for example. The fifth annual showcase of Virginia underground experimental artists happens Saturday, April 23, at Strange Matter, and Sunday, April 24, at Gallery5 — and it will have people screaming to get in or get out. That dichotomy suits event organizer and divisive entertainment champion Gary Stevens just fine. Each year the prolific Richmond noisemaker assembles a diverse cast of like-minded sound manipulators who don’t concern themselves with the mundane triviality of making people happy. From the fractured tonal disintegrations of France Gall Entity to deep left-field jazz of the New Loft, it’s instantly clear that this two-day festival is definitely not for everyone. The process of weeding out begins Saturday for a full 12 hours of entertainment or torture at 2 p.m. and Sunday from 5-11 p.m. Admission for each night is $5. strangematterrva.com or gallery5arts.org.
