100 Days of Greenery

March is the month where trees and plants start to sprout leaves. It's no wonder that green is associated with growth and renewal. Here are three quilts we admire from the US, Spain, and Taiwan.  Also scroll down for a FREE monstera leaf pattern!

100 Days of Greenery, made and quilted by Cassandra Beaver (Ohio, USA).

Photographs of a wide variety of plant life at the local botanical garden inspired this hand needleturn applique quilt by Cassandra Beaver. Using AutoCAD, she translated the images into a template line drawing. She created the quilt over 100 days and completed the design with gridded quilting remniscent of observing the outdoor world through a window screen.

Wind in the Leaves by Ekaterina Bessarabova (Valencia, Spain).

A light wind plays beautifully in the leaves... thin branches bend gracefully and young foliage shines and shimmers with different shades in motion, obeying the flow of air. This gorgeous original design was made with hand applique, embellishment, and embroidery; and finished with machine quilting.  Photos of Wind in the Leaves were taken at the 2025 Houston International Quilt Festival.

Blooming Flower of Happiness by Liu-Chi Yung-Yun (New Taipei City, Taiwan)

A gorgeous original quilt made with small pieces of fabric appliqued and quilted by machine, with the following message: "Happiness is just like the flowers in bloom.  A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it.  It just blooms".

Night at the Tree Lot by Hanne Lohde (California).

This original design by Hanne Lohde features hand applique, embellishment, embroidery, and dyeing, and machine quilting. Red and white appliqued Scandinavian hearts decorate the border and are echoed in the quilting design.

Hanne asks, "Have you ever stopped to think about what goes on at a Christmas tree lot after all the people go home at night?" This charming quilt tells the story about what happens when the snowmen come alive, and the gnomes and forest animals all come out to decorate the trees.  Each and every tree is unique!

True Christmas by Carol Carpenter, quilted by Kris Neifeld

Carol Carpenter says, "Christmas brings joy in so many different ways.  The sweet applique and pieced pattern caught my eye and shares my vision of a true Christmas image.  Joy to the World!"

This wonderful quilt is based on the Christmas Morning Delight pattern by Lisa Norton & Lora Zmak at Material Girlfriends.  Many colorful batik fabrics can be seen in various blocks. Kris Neifeld quilted spiky stars within the sawtooth stars in the borders:

O Holy Night

This beautifully made quilt is full of details.  Each tree has a unique miniature quilt block, and the sashing has hand-embroidered lettering.  The lyrics are from a Christmas carol composed in 1847 by the French composer Adolphe Adam:

O Holy Night, the Stars are Brightly Shining
It is the Night of our Dear Savior's Birth.

Note: Please check out our eBay shop for great bargains on jewelry, fabric, and collectible items!

O Holy Night, made and quilted by Charlene Nelson.

Charlene Nelson says, "I found the 4.5 inch miniature blocks in books, mostly by Judy Hopkins.  I hand-embroidered the letters using two strands of different threads and added the 3-inch stars in the sashing.  Our 'Gone to Pieces' quilt group did this as a quilt-along starting this January.  They are all very different."

Machine-stitched snowflakes echo the snowflake designs in the background fabric.

A Christmas Sampler

Is there anything more fun than a Christmas sampler quilt? Here are Santa hats, hearts, peppermints, packages, stars, trees, and stockings. We love the very cute Christmas fabrics.

Christmas Sampler by Kara Southwick, quilted by Charlene Nelson

Kara Southwick says, "I made this quilt for my newly married daughter.  I love Christmas and collecting Christmas fabrics and patterns.  The idea of a sampler was too tempting and I enjoyed making this.  My mother, Charlene Nelson, quilted it.  It turned out amazing."

The tree blocks are made with half-square triangles, as are the friendship stars!

The Joy of Christmas

Today's theme is the Joy of Christmas, which is the title of this gorgeous wall quilt. It features ornaments, a tree with angel, gingerbread house, Santa Claus, and many more holiday motifs. We admired the beautiful hand applique work in each of the blocks.

Note: Please check out our eBay shop for great bargains on jewelry, fabric, and collectible items!

The Joy of Christmas by Kay Walen, quilted by Whisper Stitch Studio.

This quilt is a combination of hand applique and machine piecing. Kay Walen says, "I chose this pattern as a challenge for my needle turn applique, machine piecing skills and visual appeal."  We took several closeup photos of Kay's beautiful blocks starting with Santa's sleigh, below, which is embellished with embroidery thread and beading.

We also loved the adorable gingerbread couple with their peppermint buttons and rick rack trim in the (see the photo below).

T The red and green plaid fabric makes a wonderful sashing to tie all the blocks together.  The truck hauling the Christmas tree (below) is even made from truck-themed fabric. We also enjoyed the lovely quilting by Whisper Stitch Studio.

NOTE:  The Joy of Christmas pattern is by Shabby Fabrics. Photos were taken by Quilt Inspiration at the 2024 Tucson (Arizona) quilt show.
