 Long May She Wave by Elaine Mahaffey, quilted by Bill Barnes.  

Elaine Mahaffey's quilt is based on the Bargello Flag pattern by Jackie Vujcich at Colorado Creations.  This quilt was exhibited at the 2026 Quilt Arizona show in honor of this year's Theme: "Let Freedom Ring." 

Elaine notes that the American flag symbolizes the liberty and freedom we enjoy in our nation. "It has stood the test of time and serves as a reminder of the price many have paid for the country we treasure.  I loved the movement that was achieved in this piece by the bargello technique.  It adds an exciting element and energy... I still feel a thrill when I sing "The Star Spangled Banner."

An asymmetrical look is produced by rotating one-half of the design 180 degrees vertically, to create the illusion of the much-loved spinning top children’s toy (see how the teal color strip, for example, appears in the lower right on the right hand side, and in the upper left on the left hand side? Very clever!)
