Red Starburst, made and quilted by Pamela Golliet

Spiky New York Beauty blocks nestle between the points of the lone star on this wall-size quilt. Pattern source: Judy Niemeyer's "Twinkle Star" pattern. Pamela Golliet says, "[This was] my first Judy Niemeyer paper pieced pattern, I used fabrics from my stash. I love the big star!"

Rose Colored Glasses, made and quilted by Athena Taylor

This beautiful lone star quilt is made from 250 paper pieced diamonds ranging from pink to red! The center star was a design by Tula Pink. Athena Taylor designed the surrounding layout, placing a red and pink butterfly in each of the four corners! Additional blocks were made with piecing, raw edge applique and needle turned applique. We spy a bee, umbrella, strawberries, and a cheerful frog.

Athena Taylor's lovely quilting can be seen in this closeup photo of the center star.

New York Beauty by Sara Quigley

This elegant paper-pieced quilt is made with a variety of red fabrics.  The background is a single white fabric. Sara Quigley says, "This was one of my first New York Beauty patterns and I made this about 15 years ago." It was beautifully hand quilted by ladies at the Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon.

Purple Elephant (2021), made and quilted by Emily Weinheimer.

A 60%-scaled version of Violet Craft's original foundation paper pieced Elephant Abstractions quilt pattern.

Sonoran Preserve Saguaro & Cactus Wren (2024) by Carol Librizzi, quilted by Leisha Farnsworth

Carol Librizzi says, "I made this quilt based on a photo I took of a saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Preserve in Arizona.  I was inspired by the collage cactus in Emily Taylor's book, Collage Quilter.  I added colors other than just greens in the cactus to add interest and a bit of whimsy.  The ombre background was suggested by my daughter after I could not find the "right" blue.  It captures the Arizona desert sky."

Carol says, "I love all the textures and movement Leisha Farnsworth did in the quilting. Every year, I try to learn something new, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning this."

Colorful (2022), made and quilted by Marilyn Snow.

Marilyn Snow says, "When I first saw the pattern, I knew I needed to make it. The hardest part was keeping everything organized so that the pencil points lined up with the correct pencil. It was a fun pattern and I really love how it turned out.  I love to play with fabric and any of my great quilting machines. I have sewn for many years and quilted for about 20 years.  I'm inspired by the many patterns and fabric lines that creative people come up with."

Burgoyne Surrounded (2024), made and quilted by Shirley Olsen.

We love this quilt pattern, which is hardly ever seen these days, so this was a special treat. Winner of a Blue Ribbon (Award of Excellence), Shirley Olsen says: "This quilt is a combination of the traditional "Burgoyne surrounded" block and an adaptation of a border designed by Trudie Hughes. Although begun in 2003, this quilt was put aside while I worked on other projects. I finally worked on it again in 2022 and 2024. I hand-guided the quilting on my Bernina 820 stationary machine." Beautiful!

Shirley explains that her quilt was inspired by a red and cream version shown many years ago at a Utah Valley Quilt Guild meeting. "Blue is my favorite color, so I chose blue and cream for my quilt. I am so happy to have finally finished."

Kaleidoscope Stars (2023) by Kathy M. Asay, quilted by Common Threads.

Here is another gorgeous re-creation of a traditional design! This quilt is based on a Civil War quilt.  Each star has a twin star with the facets reversed.  This design really sparkles.

Batik Beauties (1)

We love batiks! Their striking beauty is enhanced by designs that incorporate star blocks. The spiky points of the stars provide numerous opportunities for the eye to perceive the color contrasts in the fabrics. We hope you enjoy these photos.

Crown of Thorns by Carol W. Carpenter, quilted by Kris Neifeld

Gorgeous colors and contrasts can be seen in this quilt. Carol Carpenter says, "This Judy Niemeyer pattern was challenging, even though I chose the smaller version of the pattern.  It is beautiful in design and especially meaningful to me as my Easter season quilt."  Spiky New York Beauty blocks, and strong contrasts, add to the visual appeal.

There's a Bear There, made and quilted by Rhonda Borders.

This is an original design by Rhonda Borders, showcasing some very special batiks.  Rhonda says,  "We had to visit a couple of quilt stores on a trip to Alaska.  These bear batiks were available in Anchorate.  I designed a placemat/quilt to maximize their presence." The tree blocks add to the Alaska ambience, while sawtooth stars conjure the night sky.

Wishing Star by Meg Silvern, quilted by Linda Powell.

Stars within stars, done in wintery blues and whites! Meg Silvern says, "I made this quilt on a quilt cruise with Stitchin' Heaven in 2023.  Sandra Coffey was the teacher." Pattern source: Judy Niemeyer Quilting. An allover quilting design was used, resembling swirls in the snow.

Starburst in Color by Yvonne M. Flores, quilted by Quality Quilterz.

This classic lone star design positively glows, lending the appearance of a stained glass quilt. Yvonne Flores says, "Seeing this quilt in a quilt show was the inspiration to learn how to paper piece.  It's Judy Niemeyer's Prismatic Star. It's a favorite because this was my 'impossible dream' completed 2 years later."

Quilt Fiesta! Highlights of the Show (3)

Here are more photos from the Quilt Fiesta, the annual Tucson (Arizona) Quilters Guild show. We saw so many fabulous quilts and are sharing some highlights here.  We hope you enjoy our photos!

p.s. Please see our E-Bay shop for great bargains on patterns and vintage collectibles. For continuous free quilt patterns and blog updates, please visit us on Twitter.

The Glow by Christine Nelson, quilted by Lynn Simon

Christine Nelson based this quilt on a classic Lone Star pattern, and the color and fabric choices were simply beautiful.  Christine says, "I used an ombre fabric for the main part of the star.  At the center and outer points I used fussy cut pieces from the [kaleidoscope print] border fabric. Getting the pattern lined up in the center was a challenge." The solid fabric areas allowed plenty of space for Lynn Simon's gorgeous quilting. Winner of Second Place in the Two Person - Small Pieced category.

 Ghost
by Barbara Polston

We love pet-inspired quilts, and this one is a beauty. Made and quilted by Barbara Polston, who created a portrait of her grand-dog, Ghost, using lace.  Barbara says, "Ghost is a Siberian Husky belonging to my daughter and son-in-law.  [This was] a gift for their 8th wedding anniversary which may be celebrated with lace gifts."  What a clever idea!

Aviary by Suzanne McLean, quilted by Linda Cote

Made by Suzanne McLean and quilted by Linda Cote, this beautiful wool applique quilt was based on a pattern by Bonnie Sullivan and Dawn Heese. We enjoyed seeing the many beautiful details!  Suzanne says, "[The] pattern [was] modified in several places to create a soft, vintage look that's uniquely mine."  Winner of Honorable Mention in the Two Person, Primarily Appliqued category.

It features hand appliqued wool with velvet accents on a cotton background, enhanced with embellishment stitching using a variety of stitches, thread and ribbon.

The Neighborhood by Jean Biddick

The Neighborhood was made and quilted by Jean Biddick.  It won First Place in the One Person, Small, Pieced category, plus a special award for Exemplary Piecing.

Jean says, "The Quilters Market Blockbusters theme in 2018 was 'There Goes the Neighborhood'.  I reduced the 12" to 3" blocks and added a couple of extras to make the setting work. The blocks are NOT paper pieced (!) The central block was made years ago in a Judi Blaydon workshop about light sources - it was a perfect center for my 'Neighborhood'. "

Cactus Rose by Lynne Saul

This stunning quilt, made and quilted by Lynne Saul, was based on a pattern by Judy Niemeyer.  Lynne says, "The top is paper pieced which I love to do.  After it was completed, it sat for 5 years before I quilted it.  But now it's done."  We love this design, colors, and expert workmanship.  The bright batik fabrics with their spiky points really pop against the dark background.
