Our Feline Friends

Our feline friends bring us joy and companionship. It's no wonder so many talented quilters have chosen to honor them with a quilt! Here are three quilted tributes made with a variety of styles and techniques.

p.s. Check out our E-Bay shop for great bargains on jewelry, clothing, and collectibles! For continuous free quilt patterns, please visit us on Twitter !

The Daydream Cat by Jayeun Shin (Gyeonggi-do, South Korea).

This contemporary art quilt is made with hand dyeing, machine piecing, applique, and quilting.    A sphinx cat, drawn to a flower pot, drifts into a dream where reality and fantasy are divided into gray spaces. Blue and yellow curtains and walls reflect the cat's free, lively, and optimistic nature. The cat's imagination is expressed playfully through quilting.

Gus, made and quilted by Sandi Lanz.

Sandi Lanz says that when she saw this panel and fabric [by Timeless Treasures] she had to make it. The pattern is The Multiverse by Leigh Headington at The Sweet Tea Girls. (See the links for more information; the links are active as of this writing.) This quilt turned out beautifully.

Cats in the Garden by Nancy Landon, quilted by Brenda Smitley

Winner of the award for Exemplary Hand Applique, this original design is based on traditional Baltimore album blocks poular in the 1840s and 50's.  Nancy Landon says, "The applique flowers are my favorite and the cats are just 4 of many cats I have loved." We enjoyed every part of this gorgeous quilt including the lavish pink border roses.

1st PLACE ALTERNATIVE TECHNIQUES:  Motocat by Esther Tronchoni Simo (Spain) @esthertronchonisimo

Machine applique and quilting were combined with wool felting to create  Motocat, which won a blue ribbon (1st place) in the Alternative Techniques category!  Check out this kitty's realistic fuzzy wool felted face!

MASTER AWARD for THREAD ARTISTRY: Family by Yoshiyuki Ishizaki (Japan)

The quantity, variety, and colors of the embroidery stitches can only be appreciated close up, including the details of the pets on the front porch! As the artist says: "The more effort that goes into it, the more gorgeous it becomes!"

This Land is Your Land by Elizabeth Bauman (USA)

Elizabeth Bauman is a quilt artist, teacher, and member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). Celebrating America's beauty, this quilt is named after a famous folk song from the 1960s: "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie. Solid color fabrics give it a cheerful vibe, echoing the travel posters of the 1930s.

MASTER AWARD for INNOVATIVE ARTISTRY:  Painted Ponies on the Prairie (106" x 63") by Melissa Sobotka (USA)

Melissa Sobotka is an artist and teacher, specializing in photo-realistic techniques. This quilt has an interesting family history! A family photo depicts a traveling carnival and horse-powered merry-go-round on the plains of Nebraska and South Dakota during the early 1900s. It was professionally fabric printed, enhanced with ink and pencils, machine appliqued and quilted.

Happy Halloween!

As we enjoy all the Halloween decorations popping up around town, here's one of our favorite seasonal projects: Happy Halloween by Elizabeth Hartman! This sampler quilt features a ghost, bat, cat, witch, star, pumpkin, owl, spider, candy corn, and candy roll blocks.

p.s.  STAY TUNED for photos from the fabulous Houston International Quilt Festival!

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made almost entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. 18 Kona Solids were used to make this quilt - or have fun raiding your stash!

Hocus Pocus

Today's brilliant Halloween quilt was based on Hocus Pocus, a design by Corinne Sovey. The quilt is a skill-builder comprising 17 different blocks, some that repeat.  Several methods of construction are used, including traditional piecing, foundation paper-piecing, templates, and a bit of applique.  See if you can spot the techniques used in each of the blocks!

I Believe I Can Fly by Lesa Bornost, quilted by Renee Miller

The quilt maker, Lesa Bornost, says: "I have made simple quilts for several years and decided to challenge myself with Hocus Pocus! I learned inset circles, Y-seams, foundation paper piecing and applique to finish this quilt. It certainly was a journey but I prevailed! [Hence the quilt's title: I Believe I can Fly!"] I am proud to enter this as my very first quilt show entry, ever."
