Modern Quilt Month: Improvisation! (1)

In modern quilting, improvisation refers to a freeform, intuitive approach to quilt design where quilters create without strictly following traditional patterns, precise measurements, or pre-planned templates. It has its own category for modern quilt shows! We hope you enjoy our photos of improvisational quilts.

p.s. Check out our E-Bay shop for great bargains on craft jewelry, patterns, and collectibles!

A ZigZag Journey, The Quilted Life by Frieda Anderson (Florida, USA) @FrieStyle

We love the freeform zigzags and subtle color changes in this quilt! Frieda Anderson used zigzags to represent the non-linear pathways that life often takes.  "The continuous and sharp turns of a zigzag reflect the unexpected twists, turns and obstacles we encounter on our life's journey.  It serves as a reminder that progress is not always straightforward and growth often comes from facing the challenges, detours, and unexpected changes."

Swimming the Salish Sea by Krista Hennebury (British Columbia, Canada) @Poppyprint

With this beautiful piece, Krista Hennebury reflects on her experience of swimming the Salish Sea (near British Columbia). She says, "This quilt is my swimming story. Each breath takes my view from depth to surface in a rhythm of dark to light as I swim in the beautiful and sparkling Salish Sea." Free cutting and improvisational piecing were used to create these effects.

String Theory by Sue Erdreich (@quiltcrochetcolor) / New Jersey Modern Quilt Guild (group members: Margy Schilling, Mary Kirchoff, Miguel Huidor, Kathy Morganroth)

String Theory is bursting with color and energy! Sue Erdreich says, "This quilt was created as part of my guild Improv Bee.  I wanted to show how warm and cool colors can play against each other for graphic impact.  Bee members sewed the scrap strips together, which I then cut into the curved forms that make up the quilt." (p.s.  This is a wonderful way to use up fabric scraps!)

May Flowers

May is for Mother's Day... and flowers! This year, Mother's Day is celebrated on Sunday, May 13. We like to think of  Mother's Day as a tribute not only to mothers, but to the creative force of humankind. In a way, when we create a quilt, we bring to life our own artistic capabilities. Happy Mother's Day to all of us !

Unfurling by Frieda Anderson (Illinois, USA)

Unfurling won First Place in the Innovative Pieced category at the Houston International Quilt Festival. Frieda Anderson is known for her artistic quilt designs.  She says, "I am fascinated by pattern and color, and in particular, I love the imagery of trees and leaves.  I work with my own hand-dyed cotton and silk fabrics and enjoy the deep rich saturated colors I achieve dyeing my own fabric."

Unfurling was inspired by the landscape of the Midwest, where Frieda Anderson lives.  Her hand dyed cotton fabric is responsible for the beautiful colors. Silk, rayon and cotton thread were used. Frieda sells her fabric, quilt patterns, kits and other unique items at her website: Friestyle.

All Dressed Up by Pat Durbin (California)

Pat Durbin says, "[Begonias] just intrigue me with their frilly pedals and edges tinged with color.  The flowers were painted on cotton fabric (with So-Soft paint), thread painted and then heavily quilted.

Sunflowers by Charlotte R. Freeman (California)

A bouquet of frilly sunflowers come to life in this striking design, based loosely on an old note card image. The Perky Nine Patch border is machine pieced and is a Donna Lynn Thomas design.  The gold quarter-inch inner border creates a visual break separating the dark background from the pieced border.

Full Bloom by Pamela Burke (North Carolina)

This hibiscus was created with fused applique using commercial fabrics.  Pamela Burke says, "To me, the hibiscus is one of the most beautiful flowers.  I love taking pictures of them and wanted to recreate one in a quilt.  The contrast and depth of the throat of the flower is always amazing to study."

The English Garden by Tomoko Takeuchi and 8 Friends (Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan)

This large wall quilt is filled with a profusion of flowers, all created with hand applique.  Tomoko Takeuchi and 8 friends created this masterpiece.  The design source is the famous Japanese quilt artist, Kathy Nakajima. Tomoko says, "We had a very hard time creating the feeling of visual perspective, although it was a great experience for all of us."

Two-million-view milestone: Part 2

Quilt Inspiration recently hit a major milestone, with over 2 million page views.  We're taking the time to say THANKS to the many talented artists who inspire us all.  Here is Part 2 of our retrospective, with some contemporary quilts we've featured.

Reversible patched pojagi table runner by Victoria Gertenbach

Pojagi stitching, as explained by Victoria Gertenbach,  is a Korean art of seam construction which produces beautiful flat reinforced seams that add to the visual appeal of  works, especially with  bulky denims or delicate thin silks or voiles. For more information see our October 2011 post, Modern Quilting at The Silly Boodilly

Sparkling Spools by Laura Nownes

We love simple patterns that look spectacular. "Sparkling Spools" is just one of Laura Nownes' Simply Strip Pieced Patterns. For more information see our June 2011 post, Simple Shapes by Diana and Laura.

Walks In the Woods by Frieda Anderson

Frieda Anderson's quilts almost always reflect her fascination with nature, and what she sees on her walks. This quilt celebrates the trees in the woods, with golden sunlight shining through the leaves.  For more information see our 2010 post, Dances with Nature: The Quilts of Frieda Anderson.

Totally Tubular Triangles by Rita Hutchens

We love the contemporary design and colors of this quilt, which is the subject of one of Rita Hutchens' workshops. Her tubular strip-piecing techniques, which are a cross between Seminole and Bargello, are the subject of her book of Totally Tubular Quilts.  For more information see our July 2012 post, Totally Tubular Quilts by Rita Hutchens.

Tiny Town, 17 x 17", by Karen Eckmeier at The Quilted Lizard

Wouldn't it be fun to live in this miniature village with its brilliant hues?  Tiny Town is a collage of small overlapping fabric pieces cut into rectangles, triangles, stair steps, window and door shapes.  For more information see our October 2012 post, The Quilted Lizard: designs by Karen Eckmeier.

Shots and Stripes quilt by Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy

The 2013 book Shots and Stripes: 24 New Projects Made with Shot Cottons and Striped Fabrics by Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy is the newest of the books that showcase Kaffe's fabulous fabrics. One of the intriguing projects is this contemporary take on the traditional "Lady of the Lake" pattern.  For more information see our April 2013 post, Winner of Kaffe Fassett Quilts: Shots and Stripes.

Paisley by Bruce Seeds

Bruce Seeds' quilts are composed of small triangles that are grouped into hexagons, each hexagon resembling the view through a kaleidoscope. In "Paisley", Bruce created the illusion of a third dimension by placing some of the lighter blocks on top of a black inner border and frame. For more information see our February 2011 post, Seeds of Genius.
