Happy Halloween!

As we enjoy all the Halloween decorations popping up around town, here's one of our favorite seasonal projects: Happy Halloween by Elizabeth Hartman! This sampler quilt features a ghost, bat, cat, witch, star, pumpkin, owl, spider, candy corn, and candy roll blocks.

p.s.  STAY TUNED for photos from the fabulous Houston International Quilt Festival!

p.p.s. Check out our E-Bay shop for great bargains on designer jewelry and collectibles!
For continuous free quilt patterns, please follow us on X (Twitter)!

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made almost entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. 18 Kona Solids were used to make this quilt - or have fun raiding your stash!

Cats in Pajamas

Cats and quilts go together! Today's featured quilt has six sweet kitties dressed in pajamas. The quilter, Betsy Verrico, created this tribute to the cats her family owned in the past.  Read on for her story!

Cats in Pajamas by Betsy Verrico, quilted by Marti Jones.

This quilt has whimsy, fitting the "Sew Whimsical" theme of the 2025 Quilt Arizona show.  Betsy Verrico says, "I have owned a cat since I was six years old.  Now we have two rescue cats: Cody and Dallas.  This quilt represents cats we have had in the past: Mittens, Smokey, Tiffany, Crystal, Dusty, Rosy and Shadow.   It reminds us that pets will always be in our lives."  We love the overall "row" quilting done by Marti Jones.

Betsy Verrico's Cats in Pajamas was based on a published design by Elizabeth Hartman. This is a patchwork-pieced pattern; the blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques (there are no templates or paper piecing). We love the single-block pillow, shown below on the pattern cover.

The 50th Annual Utah Quilt Show! (2)

Welcome to the 50th Annual Utah Quilt Show! This show features some of Utah's finest quilters. Each quilt illustrates a convergence of artistry and creative decision-making with the meticulous technical work required at every step of the quilting process.  We hope you enjoy our photos!

p.s. Check out our E-Bay shop for quilt materials & patterns, jewelry, and collectibles! We also invite you to follow us on Twitter

Garden Gem (2024) by Becca Barlow, quilted by Marion McClellon.

Winner of the Art Director's Award, Becca Barlow says:  "I made this quilt during an online workshop with Jenny Haynes, whose Instagram profile is @pappersaxsten.  The workshop/pattern is called "Hexibore." Saturated colors, curves, and outstanding quilting can be seen in this dramatic quilt.

Secrets of a Mushroom Garden (2024) by Katherine Porter, quilted by Emmy Evans.

This quilt is adorable, and beautifully made! Winner of the Corn Wagon Award, from a major show sponsor, Katherine Porter says: "This whimsical quilt has been running through my mind for a while.  It is my idea of what we might see if we had an enlarged peek into the corner of a garden - birds flirting, bugs and butterflies untended. It's not just toads that use mushrooms for stools."

One of the special details of this quilt was the edging, featuring fabric knots as shown below:

Ombre Zephyr (2024), made and quilted by Luanne Hyer Olson

We love the 3D rainbow effect in this quilt... It seems to glow from within! The Ombre Zephyr pattern is by Tiffany Hayes at Needle in a Hayes Stack and is designed for 2-1/4" strips. Some fun, large bubbles and spirals were used for the quilting.

Penguins in Hawaii (2022) by Dee Dehart, quilted by Emmy Evans

Dee Dehart says, "I made this quilt for my son-in-law, who had the idea to make a quilt with sunburned penguins vacationing in Hawaii."  Some very cute details can be seen in each of the penguins' shirts!

Note:  We recognize this pattern as Penguin Party by Elizabeth Hartman.

In the Garden with Patsy (2024), made and quilted by Ruth Davis.

Stars, Log Cabin blocks, tulips, and quarter Dresden plates abound in this outstanding quilt. Winner of the Show Committee Award, Ruth Davis says, "I designed this quilt using purple and teal - my favorite color and my friend Patsy's favorite color.  she was my mentor when I was learning to quilt and has inspired my entire quilting career.  She was a positive role model and always gave critiques in a kind manner.  I will always miss her!"

Purple ruched flowers and yo yos were added as embellishments!

Pieced Feathers

Are you incorporating orange and other autumn colors into your current projects? Here is a contemporary quilt that highlights glorious feathers in warm hues. Even better, this quilt is made from scraps! We love the repetitive motion of the straight, staggered feathers.

p.s. Please see our E-Bay shop for great bargains on patterns and vintage collectibles. For continuous free quilt patterns and blog updates, please visit us on Twitter.

Sonoran Feathers by JoAnn Hinchliffe

JoAnn says, "I love scrap quilts, so when I saw this pattern online, I knew I had to make it.  Even the black background is scraps! It sure seems that no matter how many scrap quilts I make, my stash doesn't seem to get any smaller... but I'll keep trying!" (Note: Sonoran Feathers was based on the Arctic Feather pattern by Elizabeth Hartman.)

Quilts Celebrating Creativity ! part 4

Here is the 4th and FINAL part of our photos from the Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association 2019 show! This year's show, titled Quilts Celebrating Creativity,  featured some outstanding works by talented quilters. We hope you enjoy these quilts as much as we did.

(Note: please check out our E-Bay shop for great bargains on quilt patterns, fabric, and collectibles ! For continuous free quilt patterns, please visit us on Twitter !)

Modern Fancy Forest by Patti Joki

Patti notes, "Happy to have this completed in just a little over a year. It was fun to see how the animals came together, and each one is unique. The scrappy border [binding] was a 'must'!

Close-up, Modern Fancy Forest

This fun, pieced pattern by Elizabeth Hartman is very imaginative and includes all sorts of forest animals.

Greetings from California by Geri Patterson-Kutra

Geri explains, "This quilt was made to be sent to a fellow quilter in Australia as part of the "Quilts Across the Pacific" in 2019. My intention was to make a quilt that reflects the beautiful mountains of California that greet me every morning."

Close-up, Greetings From California

This contemporary,  intriguing design reminds us of an urban landscape quilt, with the rolling hills of California's Coast Range rising above the buildings of the city. Geri quilted this work herself and did a wonderful job of selecting various pattern motifs.

Heart Throb by Sue Frame

Sue writes, "The idea for this quilt came from a non-attributed photo in the "Los Altos Town Crier" [publication]. I made many changes, designed the background and piecing, selected the fabrics, and had fun with the quilting!"

Sue adds, "The cardiogram quilting [pattern] in the border stripe was adapted from a suggestion by classmates in a 'How Should I Quilt This?" class in Sandy, Utah. Sue's work is such an adorable fun-loving look at our friends in the animal kingdom.

A Burst of Spring by Rochelle Matthews

Rochelle states, "This pattern called for pink and orange, which grabbed my attention. Plenty of applique to satisfy me, and the hunt for giant rick-rack to intrigue me."

Rochelle attributes the pattern to Bunny Hill Designs, which produces whimsical patterns with very cheerful motifs. In this close-up, you can see some of the giant "happy flowers" energetically blooming forth from their spring baskets.

Floral Peek-a-Boo by Susan Okada

Susan says, "I have been quilting for some time now, but over the past few years, I began to explore methods other than the traditional blocks. When I saw the samples of Louisa Smith's quilts, with the backgrounds pieced with gentle curves peeking through a partial foreground, they spoke to me. I had found a stepping stone to move outside the box."

Close-up, Floral Peek-a-Boo

Susan's quilt was made in conjunction with a "Double Vision" workshop presented by designer Louisa Smith, who teaches innovative layering, where squares and rectangles can be turned into circles and ovals with no curved piecing. The vibrantly colored floral fabric and the circular foreground shapes give the illusion of looking through a round window into an enchanted, secret garden.

Highlights of Quilt Arizona 2019 ! part 2

The Arizona Quilters Guild has over 35 chapters, and they all get together annually for the Quilt Arizona show. The 2019 theme is Jewels of the Desert: "Every quilt is like a gemstone, the dancing colors play through patterns to endlessly fascinate and amaze. This year your quilt should convey Arizona's iridescent beauty, from golden sunsets and emerald cacti, to clear sparkling memories."

Note: please check out our E-Bay shop for great bargains on quilt patterns, fabric, and vintage jewelry ! (For continuous free quilt patterns, please visit us on Twitter !)

Wilma and Howie by Monika Hancock, quilted by Debbie Stanton

Second place winner in the Medium Size Pieced Quilts category, Monika says, "I made this pattern using Kaffe Fassett fabrics. I also made this quilt to honor my long time friends, Wilma and Howie Young. Wilma passed away in May 2018. I love them both so much! "
Wilma and Howie is based on the Lloyd and Lola quilt pattern by Elizabeth Hartman.

Monika's excellent choice of vibrant complementary colors really help these two whimsical llamas to "pop" against the neutral background. What a wonderful tribute to her beloved friends !

Debbie Stanton's intricate longarm quilting on this piece adds a great deal of texture and visual appeal.

New York Beauty by Linda Wood, quilted by Jessica Gamez

First Place winner in the Scrap Quilts category, Linda notes, "The New York Beauty block is one of my favorite quilt patterns. I loved gathering all the fabrics to make this quilt."
This quilt reminds us of the famous paper pieced New York Beauty quilt by Karen Stone. We love the way the New York Beauty blocks are offset with triangle wedges, creating wonky stars.

This is one of the most spectacular scrap quilts we've seen. The rule in this guild is that a scrap quilt must have at least 50 different fabrics, and Linda has done a tremendous job of making sure that all her fabrics go together so well. She's produced a sophisticated, finished look for a scrap quilt which looks carefully planned and organized.

Loma Nat Watni- Bountiful Harvest by Linda Visnaw

Linda explains, "A bountiful Hopi harvest brings melons, pumpkins, beans, and corn. Hopi women form a circle in the plaza with wicker plaques to sing songs of prayer and gratitude, while men surround them to receive the gifts." Linda's quilt contains all of these items in a creative, original design.

Close-up, Bountiful Harvest

Linda's beautiful quilt is accentuated by her precision in creating the circular Hopi wicker basket motifs. We really enjoyed seeing all the details of her wonderful work.

Let's Play Ball by Carol Collett

For "Let's Play Ball", Carol won a special award for Exemplary Non-Professional Machine Quilting, and she also won an Honorable Mention award in the category of Art/Innovative quilts. She writes, "[This] free-form pieced quilt was fully quilted and imposed on a second fully quilted white quilt. Border/binding was totally glued using Sue Carlson's technique."

Close-up, "Let's Play Ball"

Carol adds, "The dog center [motif] was a section of a silk scarf." We really enjoyed this fun quilt, which is a great tribute to our faithful and friendly canine companions.

Sonoita by Karen Carns

Honorable Mention winner for Best Use of Theme "Jewels of the Desert", Karen states,  "[This is] a quilted wall art consisting of applique, walking foot machine quilting, free motion quilting, tulle overlay, and decorative trim. Cacti inspired by Carol Morrissey's 'Prickly Pear in Bloom' pattern."

Close-up, Sonoita

Karen's expert use of techniques has imbued her lovely quilt with a very realistic sense of texture and dimensionality. The bright cactus flowers are beautifully represented with colorful batiks.
