A Haunting

It was known as the "Spook House." That it was tenanted by evil spirits, visible, audible and active, no one in all that region doubted any more than he doubted what he was told of Sundays by the traveling preacher. Its owner's opinion of the matter was unknown; he and his family had disappeared one night and no trace of them had ever been found.

Trailer: Terrified

I'm really late to this one.  Watched it last night and can't believe I never hear anyone talking about this 2018 horror film.  Thankfully the trailer doesn't give too much away, but it was genuinely scary with some of the creepiest ghost moments I have ever seen on film.

First Televised Exorcism

We have been watching old Paranormal Witness episodes and one delt with a pretty chilling tale which resulted in the first televised exorcism (1971).  I had never heard of this haunting before so the second the episode was over, we searched to see if we could find the footage.  Thankfully it was on YouTube.

The news segment below states that the haunting ended after the exorcism.  According to the couple involved, this was not the case.  The paranormal events escalated, and they ultimately moved out of their home.

The Woods

"[When] we got home, we immediately called our local sheriff… a few days went by, and he showed up to let me know that we were not imagining things, and someone really did chase us. I asked what they found and who it was. He looked down at the ground and then looked up, and said, ‘I'm not going to tell you what we found or who it was because if I do, you will never hike anywhere again. What we found was not normal and will not happen up here again.’ I never found out what they found or who it was. I never hiked that section of the trail again, and it completely burnt last year."

Netflix: Unsolved Mysteries

We just started watching the latest season of Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix.  If you haven't caught them, I would highly recommend.  Every season has been terrific.  Amazing production value with the same old classic spookiness of the original series.

Bube's, Beer, And Ghosts

Established in 1876 by German immigrant Alois Bube, Bube's Brewery (pronounced boo-bees) in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania has something that sets it apart from most breweries - a catacomb...  a big dark creepy catacomb, 43 feet underground.  Initially used to store beer, the catacombs are now used for dining.  We ordered some drinks and took a tour of the incredible cellar.  The massive wooden distilling barrels still stand down there, each with their original timber from the 1800's.  Bube died suddenly onsite at the brewery in 1908.  He was 57 years old.  The tour guide mentioned the possibility of a haunting, which the brewery plays up in their ghost tours and paranormal investigations.

As we finished our drinks at the bar, we asked a server if she knew of any spooky goings on and she told us about a shot glass that flew quickly off the bar, and how one time the restroom door locked from the inside, requiring the door to be removed from the hinges.  They found no one inside.

We will definitely be heading back to dine in the shadowy catacombs.
Below are some photos that we took.

Daytime Sighting

Some ghost hunters believe that darkness helps to draw out ghostly entities. Yet even a casual review of ghost reports reveals that this is not true: most sightings do not occur in darkness. People have reported seeing ghosts in broad daylight, in the morning, and at all times of the day. Well over a century ago, it was recognized that ghosts were not necessarily associated with the dark—popular perception notwithstanding. Educator and researcher Eleanor Sidgwick of the Society for Psychical Research concluded around 1885 when analyzing hundreds of eyewitness ghost reports that “ghosts may be seen in daylight or in artificial light, at dawn or at dusk, and in various parts of a house or outside in the yard,” according to Michaeleen Maher.

Ghostwatch

Currently streaming on Shudder, Ghostwatch is a British mockumentary that in a ton of ways influenced a whole range of modern horror film tropes.  Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project, and every single ghost hunting series ever seem to have drawn inspiration from this old classic from 1992.  The best part is that the hosts of the show were actual real-life television news personalities, so for anyone who missed the credits (and this apparently happened on a large scale), people became convinced that this was a real event unfolding on live TV - on Halloween night no less.

This was pure gold, with a really involved and interesting tale.  As we learned the slowly unfolding (and very disturbing) backstory of this bizarre haunting, we marveled at how something from '92 could have been so ahead of its time.

There are no good trailers for this gem and that's probably a good thing.

Ghostwatch gets my highest recommendation.

The Disturbing Calls Of Gary Sudbrink

You're being impersonated by the other voice.

A fun youtube documentary of sorts about a series of eerie calls which were fortunately recorded.  Hoaxes or not, it's a nice creepy listen, especially at night.

Trailer: The Devil On Trial

We started watching this one last night and it has a lot of creepy promise, so I'm really hoping it can stick the landing.  I surprisingly have never heard of this case and have no idea how it plays out.  Fans of the long-lost Paranormal Witness will be happy to know that this documentary feels like it was made by the people responsible for that wonderful series.

Exposure

“When we got the pictures back, there was a woman in the picture standing next to me,” Ms. Martin said. “We looked at it and thought, ‘Oh … it must be a double exposure, because the woman in the photographs looked like George’s mom. We were so busy—we worked from dawn until dusk—and were so exhausted with the renovations on the house, we didn’t have time to look into it any further.”
