Gingerbread

Early in the morning before the children were awake, the witch grabbed Hansel and locked him in a closet. Then she shook Gretel awake, and cried, "Get up, lazy thing, and help me get the oven ready.

I'm going to bake your brother into gingerbread!"

Gretel wept at the witch's words, but she had no choice but to do as the old woman commanded.
Once a fire had been lit beneath the oven, the witch pushed poor Gretel toward the oven.

"Creep inside," said the witch, "and see if the oven is hot enough."

Stones

Statement of Elizabeth Anne Frayley
October 29, 1962

I saw the commotion. A few children throwing rocks at something small and cornered. I'd had it out for them since they smashed my azalea bush last spring, and I figured they found a grounded bird, so I headed over there to stop them. But it was a tiny person. A person!
Like you and me. But four inches high! They were throwing stones at her. I grabbed the tallest boy's wrist before he could throw another rock. But they killed her. Can you imagine that? A tiny person. And they killed her.

The Witches' Sabbath

Beautiful work by artist Arthur Rackham.

First discovered his work when I purchased an illustrated copy of Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
