Sony's other rhythm/music franchise offers a schizophrenic soundtrack and colorful gameplay. Read Review

Amplitude, a unique extension to the critically-acclaimed FreQuency title that reinvented the music gaming genre, is a fast-paced addictive rhythm action game that will appeal to gamers and music enthusiasts alike. Amplitude lets gamers take part in the music revolution by mixing and re-mixing songs from top bands in an on- and off-line, interactive gaming experience.

Following up on the great line-up of bands in FreQuency, Amplitude expands the music list with a variety of genres including songs and video content from David Bowie, Weezer, Garbage, Quarashi, Logan 7, as well as other major recording artists.

Even better, Amplitude is compatible with Sony's online adapter, so multiplayer game aren't limited to folks sitting around in your living room. Online options will include full chat modes and a ranking system, as well as the ability to create a remix online, which can be saved by the system for other players to listen to and play.

Alas, after five or six hours, the thrill was gone as I came to realize that Frequency lacked three crucial elements of my beloved rhythm/music imports: catchy pop music, visual rewards, and quirky personality. Its new sequel, Amplitude, contains the same problems as the first game, and ultimately leaves me just as cold. Read More »

PS2 Previews | Jan 26, 2003

Many were surprised when Sony announced Frequency for the PS2. Between the unpopularity of most music games in the U.S. and the genre's wane in Japan, an original game coming out of an untested American development house seemed like a folly. The game was fairly well received, though, as it brought together easy-to-understand gameplay with a decent selection of music and some panache. The game's sequel, cleverly entitled Amplitude (what's next -- Oscillation?) will likely please fans of the original, although I'm not so sure it'll win many new converts. Read More »
