Interplay's Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance set the tone for PS2 hack 'n' slash. Thanks to satisfying gameplay and uncommonly sexy graphics, Dark Alliance was a success for both critics and players. So when Sony Online Entertainment decided to expand the EverQuest franchise into something more lively and action-oriented than the traditional massively multiplayer game (EverQuest Online Adventures came out for the PS2 in '03), the company went right to the source: Dark Alliance developer Snowblind Studios. Champions of Norrath is the result. It's a logical evolution of superb dungeon-crawling gameplay from the people who do it best. And this time around, it's got online play. Read More »
If eviscerating orc flesh in the company of others is sounds appealing, then PlayStation 2 owners need look no further than SOE's upcoming Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest. EverQuest is the '90s RPG poster child for success. Successfully enslaving hundreds of thousands of paying customers every month, the lands of Norrath always seem to offer up a healthy volume of adventuring. This is now particularly true with Champions of Norrath, but instead of stemming from the MMORPG vein of time-sucking gameplay, Champions takes more than a few leaves from the likes of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and presents a very playable action RPG. Since the first time I was shown Sony Online Entertainment's Champions of Norrath, I've been anticipating the game greatly. Designed by Snowblind Studios, the team behind the early PS2 action-RPG hit Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and featuring four player cooperative on- and offline play, it seems set to fill a conspicuously absent niche on the PS2. While SOE's EverQuest Online Adventures fills the MMO needs of PS2 gamers, and Final Fantasy XI will join it next year, there's nothing akin to GameCube and Xbox's Phantasy Star Online: Episode I & II. Less commitment, more action, and in my opinion -- more fun. Read More »
When I was first shown Champions of Norrath at Sony Online Entertainment's offices, I was immediately bullish on the game; I really enjoyed Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, and this is more or less a sequel -- the developer is the same, unlike with the "real" sequel, BGDA2, and it uses an updated version of the technology that drove that game. EverQuest has already come to the PlayStation 2 -- but detractors will be quick to point out that it's more or less a dumbed-down version of the PC game crammed into the console with a crowbar. It sounds harsh, but it's more or less true. Instead of building a game from the ground up, SOE tore one down; it's proven fairly successful, but lots of us wonder what could have been if they started from scratch. Read More »
