Mini Journaling with Moodiversary and Art Marks Summer Challenges
Hi! Today I'd like to share with you couple of fun summer challenges that I can recommend for anyone who feels inspired to art/journal but maybe has just a few minutes for it daily, which was often the case for me this summer!
DeeDee Catron and Jenn Engle's Moodiversary uses the same mood board for the whole month, but there is a new link-up for prizes every week. My link is to Week 3, which will expire within a day, but you'll find Week 4 in DeeDee's blog when the time comes.
The delicious Moodiversary Board is here and the reason for the challenge is to celebrate the first year of DeeDee and Jenn's monthly inspiration posts called Mixed Media Moods. So the inspiration will continue after this month, on their blogs and YouTube channels.
I was inspired by the organic forms of the skeleton leaves and the tree on the bottom row, and the door one row up. Plus all the colours of the challenge, but particularly the yellow paint shade, Pollen, and Royal Fuchsia and Desert Turquoise.
Rae Missigman's Art Marks - A 30 Day Summer Challenge has a prompt word for each day, and the challenge encourages you to only use a set time, say 5-10 minutes, to "make your marks" each day. You can find the prompts list at Rae's blog.
I've been catching up with the prompts in no particular order - maybe some prompts felt more ready than others to emerge from the different backgrounds of each side in my mini book, actually!
Here's Day 9, Free Form:
Day 20, Scratched:
Day 16, Mirrored. This is not in the same 3 1/2x3 1/2 inches mini album as the others. I wanted to experiment with a slightly larger format so this is another junk journal, about 6x8 in size.
What could suit the Mirrored prompt better than this good old way of printing on both sides of a spread/folded paper, that many have surely have done as kids! I added some pencil and carbon on the one side of the spread to make my butterfly not completely mirrored, to reflect the idea that a mirror does not show everything there is.
Day 17 prompt of Dripped is the last for today!
I made my mini album specifically with these quick challenges in mind. It is an accordion book and the page size is 3 1/2 inches. I'll be back another day to show more of how it looked in the beginning, what different papers I used for backgrounds, and so on!
On the pages next to Free Form, you can see that some background papers are more finished than others, and I may want to keep them as they are. But more about that later.
And the covers, oh, they are such a fun idea even if I say so myself. The size of 3 1/2 inches might ring a bell to folks around my age or older, that is, those of us who already used a computer before the year 2000. Let's see if anyone can guess what I used.
Thank you for popping in and commenting, as always!

Pocket Art Pages for Scrap Africa Mood Board Challenge No. 67
Hello!
With the start of the New Year, the challenge at Scrap Africa is this cheerful mood board combined with the following questions: What does 2016 hold for you?
What are your hopes and desires?
This time, I haven't thought up a word that would represent the whole coming year for me, but what is new is that I'm experimenting a new format for documenting my thoughts, memories and art learning throughout the year. I'm joining the Documented Life Project (DLP) 2016, the UnPlanner online class. You can read more about it here! The course fee for the whole year is just $12, so even I dared to make the decision to join it, even though I haven't managed to finish a long online course before. I find it generally hard to find the time to watch the videos, whereas I can read books and blogs in bed. Well, now that the phones are smart enough for watching even videos in bed, I might be more successful!
Here's the Scrap Africa Mood Board No. 67, which inspired me with its colours, the doodles, the birds, the vintage crackled paint, the whimsical houses, the gold striped tape and the lighthearted feeling in general. A bit of spring while it's still middle of winter here in the Nordic countries. You're welcome to join until the end of January!
This is the first spread with the monthly calendar view and the monthly divider.
The second spread consists of an art journal page and a photo pocket page.
You can get a feel of the Nordic winter in these photos that were taken in Stockholm, a mid-morning in the first week of January!
The art journal page with the word Freedom in Finnish language was inspired by the Freedom themed Mixed Media Place challenge, and Studio 75 challenge, with the theme of Vintage.
The card with the photos is a Pocket Art Card (PAC) for my DLP 2016 UnPlanner; the prompt was to incorporate the number 16 to represent the new year. Can you see where that is? Yes, there are 16 of the faux cross stitches.
The card was super quick to make. All I did was took a pre-made print/collage background and selected which part of it would make a nice composition. In doing this, it helps if you have a template with a hole the size of the card, so you can see where to cut the best part of the background.
I just drew the stitches and voilà, the card was ready! I'm using the 3x4 card size instead of the normal ATC size to suit the pockets of my binder.
My take on vintage may not be so obvious, but for me colours are an important part of the vintage look, and also the crackled paint and distressed paper. I was thinking of what the shades and textures would be like in an aged collage, or old sketches or technical drawings in a museum or an archive.
Thank you for your visit and welcome again!

Skyline Chunky Pages
Hello! Today I'm posting a few Chunky 4x4 pages I made for a Cityscapes & Skylines themed swap at my dear ATCs for All site earlier this year. I'm really happy with the special look that I achieved by using hand decorated papers only. Well, there's sheet music and book pages but they too are hand painted. I've collected marbled, stamped and painted papers for a while but this was a first time I made a whole project with that stash!
I think I need to make a few more of these for myself to keep, too - though making them is a sure way to catch a travel fever! Can you guess which cities I was thinking of?
They are Venice, Istanbul and Barcelona. And hey, if you want to try making a skyline collage of your own cities of inspiration, just google city skylines and plenty of images can be found to help as a reference for drawing your template.
Have a nice week!

Summer of Color, Week 6: Raspberry, Tangerine and Lemon
Hello! We're having a record heat wave here in Finland and I've been spending almost every spare moment outside in the shade or on a beach, so I'm a bit behind in updating update my projects. This painting is for the last palette of the Summer of Color challenge that closed a week ago. I was instantly inspired by the colours: Raspberry, Tangerine and a Smudge, Splash or Pop of Lemon!
From a drawing guide book, I'd gotten the idea to practice drawing outlines only and wanted to give it a try. I first sketched the outlines of the Orange Daylilies and painted them tangerine orange with acrylics. The lemon yellow is in the handwriting in the background. I wrote the names of the flower in different languages, and then painted over it all with the colour raspberry, in watercolour. In this technique, you need to use acrylics for what you paint first, so that it won't bleed when getting wet again.
I'm also linking this another inspiration, namely last week's Take a Word Challenge: Silhouttes. And I'll be back later to add the credits for the book I referred to!
Nämä rusopäivänliljat maalasin Summer of Color -haasteen viimeiselle viikolle, jossa värien nimet olivat mandariini, vadelma ja sitruuna. Luonnostelin kukkien ääriviivat ja maalasin ne akryyliväreillä. Keltaisen osuus on tausta, johon kirjoitin käsin kukan nimeä eri kielillä. Lopuksi maalasin kaiken päältä vesiväreillä vadelmanpunaisella. Tässä tekniikassa nsimmäinen vaihe tulee maalata nimenomaan akryyliväreillä, jotta väri ei leviä kastuessaan uudelleen!
Linkitän myös edellisen viikon Take a Word -haasteeseen, jonka aiheena oli silhuetti.

Fiskarettes DT: Rain, Go Away! - Nyt riittää sade
Hello everyone, and happy July! We've had a super rainy and cold month of June here in Finland. I do enjoy rainy days when I can stay inside and be cozy, perhaps crafting, if I'm lucky! In between the showers, I also love to pop outside in the garden to admire all the different shades of green and blue and grey. That was my inspiration for this quick art journal page, where most of the papers I used for the clouds are cut from magazines.
I used my Fiskars Cloud Squeeze Punch (Large) for the clouds in this DT project for the Fiskarettes Finland site.
That said, now it's definitely about time for a merrier weather!

Summer of Color, Week 2: Coral, Teal and White
Hello again, and happy Sunday! I hope everyone’s enjoyed their Midsummer and Summer Solstice. Here’s my last day participation to Summer of Color, week 2: Coral, Teal and a Splash, Smudge or Pop of White. I thought of crabs the minute I saw the colour palette, and am super glad I had time to finish my piece. I’m also glad to have tried watercolour painting, which is a fairly uncommon medium to me. I’m more of a scrapbooker and mixed media collage maker usually! Getting to try something new is one of the best things in joining online challenges, I think.

Vintage Halloween ATCs
Happy Halloween to you all!
Halloween hasn't been traditionally celebrated in Finland, but more and more people are finding it fun to dress up and spook a little. I think there can't be too many festivals to cheer up the darkest season, and it's quite an inspiring crafting theme as wekk!
Last year there were particularly many Halloween themed swaps at ATCs for All, and I just realized I haven't posted most of those cards here. So here's some Halloween inspiration!
Waiting for Midnight. Collage image from Freubel's Freebies.
Spidey Lover. Spider in the background from Graphics Fairy, lady from G45 scrapbook paper.
King of the Nerves. Collage image from Graphics Fairy.
Nasty Jack. Collage image from Urban Debris.
In addition to the collage images, I've used the following products:
scrapbooking paper
watercolour paper
sheet music pages
paper napkins
magazine cut outs and ephemera
rubber and acrylic stamps
dye and pigment inks
acrylic paints and matte medium
watercolour pencils
Glossy Accents
die cuts, rubons, fibers

Mail Art With Quirky Torn Paper Faces
This week's theme at Take a Word is Mail Art. I'm really glad I didn't miss that, because I do quite a bit of mail art for trade at the ATCs for All community. There's an ongoing swap with new partners assigned for every month, so I can be sure to find a piece of art in my mailbox frequently!
I think these gals must be pirates that got a bit carried away by the jewellery they'd taken! I continue to be inspired by the idea of Quirky Torn Paper Faces, which was the theme of another ATCs for All swap earlier this year.
Take a Word -haasteessa viikon aihe on Mail Art. Olen mukana ATCs for All -yhteisön jatkuvassa vaihdossa, jossa lähetetään yksi tällainen kirjekuori joka kuukausi uudelle vaihtokumppanille, joten omaankin postilaatikkoon tupsahtaa jotain kaunista säännöllisesti!
Olipa taas hauska tehdä näitä hullunkurisia kasvoja! Alkuperäinen idea on aiemmasta ATCs for All -vaihdosta, johon tehdyt korttini löytyvät täältä.

Pink & Orange Whimsical Chicken // Kirjavaiset kanaset
Hello all, and Happy Midsummer to you!
Here in Finland, Midsummer Eve is one of the most important celebrations of the year. Traditionally, it's a holiday we want to spend near the nature and by the water, with a sauna, good food, decorations of flowers and birch branches, maybe going to a barn dance and watching bonfires by the water. My family does not have one settled tradition, but this year we actually did go to a countryside dance in a barn, by the sea, with a bonfire later on, when the dusk began to fall!
Today I got myself some crafting time again and made these quick and easy 4x4 inches chunky pages. I had the colour combo Hot Pink & Orange in mind from the Summer of Color: Week Two Challenge.
These chunky 4x4 pages, or one of them, will also go to a Pick-a-Theme (PAT) Swap at ATCs for All. The recipient asked for Whimsical Birds, and though I don't know this style so well yet, I recently learned that drawing a bit out of proportion is an easy way to create a whimsical look.
So I gave these chickies those super long legs, and I'm quite happy with how they look! And no, I was not thinking of Easter yet... I just somehow thought of chickens when I was to do birds with pink and orange colours. See, I really love those heritage chicken sorts that have a very orangish colour, wonder what's the right name for this shade of brown!
Juhannustanssit on tanssittu tältä vuodelta, ja tänään ehdin jo pikkaisen askarrellakin. Mukavaa juhannusviikonlopun jatkoa kaikille!
Pinkki ja oranssi olivat viikon värit Summer of Color -sivustolla ja hassunkurisia lintuja oli puolestaan toivonyt yksi ATCs for All -vaihtokumppani.

In My Flower Garden
The other day, I found yet another cool challenge blog, this time from South Africa! The Scrap Africa challenges run for two weeks each, so I had to hurry a bit to make mine in time! They have both sketch challenges and theme challenges taking turns. This time it was a sketch:
I am also entering this in the Berry71Bleu Challenge with the theme of "What do you most like to do in summer...?" My photo does not feature an activity but I think it's within the theme, representing the peace and quiet of my garden that I really enjoy! I was also inspired by Let's Get Trendy 3, where stitching was the theme of the day.
Have a nice weekend!

Dare to Set Goals: An Art Journal Page
This journal page is inspired by the Design Memory Craft challenge with the following question: "What one important lesson have you learnt this year so far or what one theme has stood out for you?" I decided on the theme of daring and particularly, daring to set concrete goals.
Daring to dream is really important, but at some point one needs to think out ways to make those dreams come true, too! And figure out which dreams I wish to fulfill in the next year or three, and which ones can happily wait till later on. Not all dreams need to come true, I think. It's better to have too many than too few!
Unelmista tavoitteiksi
My favourite journal at the moment is this little 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches Hahnemühle Travel Booklet, which I carry about everywhere. The paper is thick and good, but the only lack I now noticed was that it does not take watercolours very well. I did not have the gesso with me, else I could have started with giving it a coat.
I drew an ornamental circle with watercolour pencils. I found at our cottage an old yellowed plastic doily ugliness that made a great stencil. But when I added water, the paper started to break. When dry, I collaged some stamped paper onto to the most worn out parts of the spread.
When I got home, I gessoed it before applying acrylic paints. The stencil I used here is Honeycomb from The Crafters' Workshop. The ornament stamp came with a magazine, I think, and the one with the leaves is from an unknown origin, while the chevron one is made by me. I added some washi tape, postage stamps and ephemera for the finishing touch and did the lettering with a Promarker.
Vesi alkoi kuluttaa paperia rikki, joten lisäsin niihin kohtiin leimattua paperia. Gessoa levitin tähän väliin ennen akryylimaaleja.
Akryyleilla sabluunana oli The Crafters' Workshopin Honeycomb. Lehtileimasimen valmistajaa en tiedä, ja nuolileimasin on itse tehty. Kirjoitin viisaudet Promarker-tussilla ja viimeistelin aukeaman washiteipillä ja muutamalla postimerkillä.
I am also submitting this to the following challenges:
Osallistun tällä työllä myös näihin haasteisiin:

Let's Get Trendy Now 3, Day 5: Textured Layers
Take a Word: Cool Colours
See you, I hope to post again soon!

Hi all! These ATCs are for a swap of monochromatic cards. The folks I made them for chose the colours and the themes. The kimono and the turtle were nice, easy to draw subjects which I then cut and pasted on another paper. I did the outlines with a Promarker (purple) and a slightly finer Adirondack marker (green).
The background of the Kimono is painted with watercolours and that of the Turtle with acrylics.
This is a super fast way to make cards that are cool nevertheless. I think they turn out best if at least some of your papers are hand painted or decorated. A good way to use to last scraps of previous projects!
Last but not least, I just heard of a free workshop for everyone who loves colours. Summer of Color 2013 is a free blog event to celebrate all the colours of the rainbow, and lasts for six weeks starting Monday, June 3rd. Right now there's a vote going on about the first colour combo. There's a new challenge and new prizes every week, so it's really worth taking a look!
Sopii silppulaatikon aarteita rakastaville!
Lopuksi suosittelen kaikille värien ja värihaasteiden ystäville ilmaista workshoppia nimeltä Summer of Color 2013. Uusi värihaaste palkintoineen on tarjolla viikottain, joten kannattaa kurkata!

The Mask of Zorro: Southwest Inspired ATCs
Here's a couple of ATCs from earlier this spring, all inspired by the themes of the American Southwest. I've never been there but the images are familiar enough, thanks to movies and all: ochre coloured earth, red sunsets with silhouettes of cacti and Joshua trees. And the traditional pueblos of the Natives.
All three stamps I used are from Viva Las VegaStamps: Pueblos, Cow Skull and Joshua Tree.
The background of the hand drawn Zorro I painted with tube watercolours and in the two other sceneries, I used acrylics. All the stamping was done with Versamark embossing ink and black embossing powder.
Have a nice week!

Viva Las VegaStamps! DT Tryout
With this post, I'm applying to the Design Team at Viva Las VegaStamps! I like their funky and versatile stamps a lot so I'd really love to be a part of that team.
Here are three of my recent favourite stamped projects. The call is on until May 30th, in case someone else is interested!
Last Days of Disco Hand
At my favourite site ATCs for All, we’re also trading Hand Art, where you make your art on hand shaped pieces of cardboard. This one is for a trading friend who requested a Pink and Sparkly Hand.
The neon pink of my acrylic paint reminded me of the 1980’s fashion, and the combination of black lace and bright pink in particular. You know what I mean, if you remember Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan!
I wanted there to be a ring chained to a bracelet and knew I had exactly the stamp for that: Record Face On 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 I just got in the mail from VLVS! I stamped and heat embossed the row of vinyls on top of the lace glove I had printed with a stamp from Stampendous. The bracelet and attached ring are cut from star shaped punchinella ribbon, and the other rings are circle shaped die cuts from sparkly papers.
Mixed Media Medusa ATC
My favourite style in ATC cards is mixed media collage, and here’s a card I’m particularly happy with! She’s a Medusa, the Greek mythical character with a female face and snakes in place of her hair. Medusa’s look could turn the lookers to stone, and she can also be seen as a symbol of mistreated women’s anger. In the designer Versace’s logo, on the other hand, she is said to represent beauty, art and philosophy. A many faced figure, then!
The face stamp I used is from Lost Coast Designs. I stamped her on a piece of a map to add a bit of an edge to it. She comes from the dark underwater, after all! The background is painted with acrylics on a music sheet. For the snake skin pattern of the hair, I used punchinella as a stencil to spread Golden Modeling Paste from the German supplies brand Lukas.
Lady with a Snow Globe: Mixed Media Wall Art
This wall hanging is actually an altered book cover. I knew I wanted the focal image to be my new Lady with a Snow Globe from VLVS! But first of all, I wanted to make lots of layers.
This will be a present to a friend across the ocean, with whom we first became pen pals as young girls. With the postal theme in mind, I picked some used postage stamps and borders from airmail envelopes.
I also pasted a lace border at the bottom of the piece and small sun or star punch-outs here and there. The doodled flowers are patterned tissue paper decoupaged onto the background. Apart from them, the collage background does not show through much in the end, but I like how it gives depth to the piece anyway!
I gave the piece some gesso and several layers of acrylic paint and stamped a bit here and there before stamping and heat embossing the Lady.
Though she's actually looking at a snow globe, I think her face is so kind and knowing that she might also be a good fairy or fortune-teller visioning happy years for my friend on her birthday!
Lyhyesti suomeksi
Tällä kertaa tuli aika pitkä postaus ja pelkästään englanniksi. Uskaltauduin hakemaan Viva Las VegaStamps! Seuraavalla kertaa kirjoittelen taas suomeksikin!

More ATCs with Punchinella
Here's more cards using punchinella as a stencil, made in the style of my earlier post Quirky Torn Paper Faces. Have a nice crafty Sunday!
Lisää punchinellaprinttiä ja hullunkurisia kasvoja
Tässä taas pari ATC-korttia, joissa on käytetty punchinellaa painosabluunana. Lisää hassuja kasvoja löytyy aiemmasta postauksestani. Aurinkoista sunnuntaita kaikille, tai tunnelmallista sadepäivää askartelun parissa!
