Skyline Chunky Pages

Hello! Today I'm posting a few Chunky 4x4 pages I made for a Cityscapes & Skylines themed swap at my dear ATCs for All site earlier this year. I'm really happy with the special look that I achieved by using hand decorated papers only. Well, there's sheet music and book pages but they too are hand painted. I've collected marbled, stamped and painted papers for a while but this was a first time I made a whole project with that stash!





I think I need to make a few more of these for myself to keep, too - though making them is a sure way to catch a travel fever! Can you guess which cities I was thinking of?



They are Venice, Istanbul and Barcelona. And hey, if you want to try making a skyline collage of your own cities of inspiration, just google city skylines and plenty of images can be found to help as a reference for drawing your template.

Valentine's Day Mail Art

Here in Finland, we don't traditionally celebrate Valentine's Day, and when I was asked to create a love themed chunky 4x4 page for this holiday, it was a bit of a challenge. Then I remembered this love themed quote that I have always liked, by the author of the Little Prince, and had the idea of cutting the two faces from this paper with old script-looking pattern.



Meillä Suomessa ystävänpäivän sisältö on sen verran erilainen, että rakkausaiheinen Valentinen päivän sivu tuntui alkuun hiukan haastavalta aiheelta. Sitten sain idean Pikku Prinssin kirjoittajan lausahduksesta, josta etenkin nuorempana tykkäsin kovasti:

"Rakastaa ei ole sama kuin katsoa toisiaan silmiin, se on katsomista yhdessä samaan suuntaan."

Tämä on siis vaihtoon tarkoitettu niin sanottu chunky-sivu, joita kerätään ATC-korttien tapaan. Taustapahvi tehdään vähän tukevammaksi, jotta sivut voi kiinnittää kulmasta renkaalla pieneksi albumiksi.

While I haven't made a lot of other love themed cards, I've always really liked hearts, so this envelope was very easy to come up with. I started with the large heart, stamped with red embossing powder, that I had made previously but didn't find a use for. I liked it better when I coloured the background black, and decided to emphasize the grungy look by using a graffiti themed background stamp. I wanted to add more hearts in very different textures. With the leather-looking handmade paper and some loose woven burlap fabric, I'm quite happy how it turned out!



Sydämen muotoa tykkään käyttää paljonkin, se sopii minusta moneen. Kirjekuoren tuunauksen lähtökohtana oli punaisella kohojauheella leimattu sydän, joka oli jäänyt aiemmin käyttämättä. Siitä tuli minusta parempi, kun väritin taustan mustaksi. Hempeän käsintehdyn kuoren seuraksi halusin vähän rouheampia elementtejä. Käytin graffitiaiheista taustaleimasinta ja tein lisää sydämiä mahdollisimman erilaisista materiaaleista, kuten nahkamaisesta käsintehdystä paperista ja löyhästä säkkikankaasta.

Chunkies Again: Little Black Hen, Paris and a Ballerina

Good morning! I made some chunky 4x4 pages again. These are for a Pick-a-Theme Swap, meaning the recipients chose the themes. It's fun to make cards for this kind of swaps because you get to try themes you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. My partners asked for Chicken, Ballerina and Paris.

The images of Chicken and Ballerina are from Graphics Fairy. In the Paris page, the image is in the background, cut from a Vintage Paris calendar. The flowers are cut from napkins and collaged with beeswax on top.



Huomenta! Tein taas muutaman chunky-sivun. Pieni musta kananen, ballerina ja Pariisi -sivut menevät vaihtoon, jossa vastaanottajat ovat valinneet aiheet. Tällaisiin on hauska osallistua, sillä tulee laajennettua aihepiiriä siitä, mitä itselle olisi juolahtanut mieleen!

Kanan ja ballerinan kuvat ovat ilmaiseksi tulostettavissa Graphics Fairyn sivuilta. Pariisi-sivun pääkuva on taustapaperissa. Se on kalenterista, jossa on 1950-luvun näkymiä Pariisista. Kukat on leikattu serveteistä ja liitetty päälle sulatetulla mehiläisvahalla. Tuo kiehtova tapa käyttää servettejä on kuvailtu tarkemmin täällä.

Black & White Chunky Pages

Here are some more chunky 4x4 pages created for a swap at ATCs for All, with the charming theme of Black and White!

The images in the first two cards are stamped and heat embossed on collaged backgrounds. The vintage lady's face stamp is from Viva Las VegaStamps and the dress stamp is from Hot Off the Press.

Allt om Scrap Mixed Media & Art Journaling Sunday

Hello again! Yay, here's my first project as a member of Allt om Scrap Design Team! AoS is a cool Swedish online magazine with new inspiration every Sunday. Today's theme is Mixed Media and Art Journaling. Here you can check out what the other team members created!

I love creating collaged backgrounds. It's a great project for those days when you have no idea of a finished piece yet, but would rather clean up your table first from the previous scraps! Yes, this is how I use those scraps. Though not all of them, unfortunately, so I do have to throw some away too! After a layer of acrylic paint, you can see through a bit but not too much. You can wipe the wet paint away in places where you want more of the collage to show.



Tykkään tehdä taustoja kollaasina etenkin silloin, kun minulla ei ole vielä ideaa valmiista työstä vaan haluan ensin siivota silppulaatikon edellisten töiden jäljiltä. Juuri tällaiseen niitä on kiva käyttää! Akryylimaalikerroksen jälkeen alta kuultaa juuri sen verran, että se tuo syvyyttä työhön muttei hallitse liikaa. Märkää maalia voi pyyhkiä sienellä tai talouspaperilla, jos haluaa jostain kohtaa enemmän näkyviin.

I often make the collage on a bigger background and cut it afterwards. Here, I got four 4x4 chunkies from a piece that was 8x8 inches to begin with. And then I got to try my lovely new Viva Las VegaStamps tree stamp for the first time!

I've been chosen to Allt om Scrap Design Team!

Here are more garden themed chunky pages from earlier this summer, along with some great news I've waited eagerly to tell! I've been chosen to my first Design Team post at the Swedish online magazine Allt om Scrap. The name means All about Scrap, but it´s about all paper crafts equally and sometimes other sorts of crafts, too! You can imagine I was glad to hear these news.



Do check out this site, with new inspiration theme every Sunday plus two reader challenges monthly. My first project for this team will be out next Sunday! With the DT position and all, I've promised myself to get back to blogging frequently. I hope you'll forgive me for the way too long break this summer!



Hyviä uutisia! Minut on valittu ruotsalaisen Allt om Scrap -verkkolehden Design Teamiin! Onpa hauskaa päästä vihdoin jakamaan tämä tieto, olen ollut ihan innoissani siitä asti, kun kutsun sain. Ensimmäinen tiimille tekemäni työ ilmestyy ensi sunnuntaina. Käy ihmeessä kurkkaamassa Allt om Scrapin sivuilla viimeistään silloin! Uusi inspiraatioaihe julkaistaan aina juuri sunnuntaisin, ja kuukausittain on myös kaksi haastetta lukijoille.

Tässä tulee viimeisiä kesäaiheisia askarteluja, ennen kuin syksyn tunnelmat vievät mukanaan! Tein nämä puutarha-aiheiset chunky-sivut kesällä, mutta ne jäivät silloin laittamatta blogiin. Pink & Orange Whimsical Chicken // Kirjavaiset kanaset

Hello all, and Happy Midsummer to you!

Here in Finland, Midsummer Eve is one of the most important celebrations of the year. Traditionally, it's a holiday we want to spend near the nature and by the water, with a sauna, good food, decorations of flowers and birch branches, maybe going to a barn dance and watching bonfires by the water. My family does not have one settled tradition, but this year we actually did go to a countryside dance in a barn, by the sea, with a bonfire later on, when the dusk began to fall!

Today I got myself some crafting time again and made these quick and easy 4x4 inches chunky pages. I had the colour combo Hot Pink & Orange in mind from the Summer of Color: Week Two Challenge.



These chunky 4x4 pages, or one of them, will also go to a Pick-a-Theme (PAT) Swap at ATCs for All. The recipient asked for Whimsical Birds, and though I don't know this style so well yet, I recently learned that drawing a bit out of proportion is an easy way to create a whimsical look.

So I gave these chickies those super long legs, and I'm quite happy with how they look! And no, I was not thinking of Easter yet... I just somehow thought of chickens when I was to do birds with pink and orange colours. See, I really love those heritage chicken sorts that have a very orangish colour, wonder what's the right name for this shade of brown!



Juhannustanssit on tanssittu tältä vuodelta, ja tänään ehdin jo pikkaisen askarrellakin. Mukavaa juhannusviikonlopun jatkoa kaikille!

Nämä ovat taas ns. chunky-sivuja, mitoiltaan sen 10x10 cm. Pinkki ja oranssi olivat viikon värit Summer of Color -sivustolla ja hassunkurisia lintuja oli puolestaan toivonyt yksi ATCs for All -vaihtokumppani.

Tykkään kovasti perinnekanaroduista, niistä punaruskeista, joten kun ajattelin oranssia lintua, ajattelin kanaa. En siis ollut tekemässä vielä pääsiäiskortteja, vaikka perheelle tuli se mieleen kun näkivät valmiit kanakortit!

A Bug's Life: Chunky 4x4 Pages

Early summer is such a perfect season to enjoy gardens, and that theme keeps coming to my crafts a lot these days, too. This time I've made some chunky 4x4 pages with a garden and critters theme. These are for a swap at ATCs for All. They are really fun to make and trade, and I'm expecting to have my first full book of them soon!

I'm entering these chunkies in Take a Word challenge, where the theme of the week is Botanicals.



Puutarhan ötökkäelämää

Alkukesä on parasta aikaa puutarhassa, ja sadepäivinä puolestaan voi inspiroitua puutarha-aiheisista askarteluista. Nämä chunky-kortit menevät ATCs for All -yhteisön vaihtoon, jonka aiheena oli puutarha pikku elävineen. Osallistun näillä Take a Word -haasteeseen, jossa viikon aihe on kasvimaailma.

Kohta minulla onkin näitä sivuja ensimmäisen pienen kirjan verran, aion siis rei'ittää sivut yhdestä nurkastaan ja kiinnittää renkaalla. Lopputuloksena on ikään kuin minialbumi, mutta ei valokuville tarkoitettu vaan sellaisenaan valmis katseltavaksi. Mukavaa sadepäivää!

Happy Orange

Here's a chunky book page sized 4x4 inches. The theme is monochromatic Orange, so it felt just the right place to test my new stamp, a girl's face in a calendula flower. It is from Viva Las Vegastamps and I like it a lot. It's so cheerful yet not too cutesy to my taste.

This was also the first time I used fabric or paper flowers in my crafts. I didn't like them at first but now I feel like using them a lot. It can turn out fun to sometimes re-think your opinion of a product!



Oranssin iloa

Tyttö kehäkukan keskellä oli kuin tehty leima tähän projektiin. Saaja toivoi 4x4-tuumaisesta Chunky Page -sivusta yksivärisen oranssin, ja Viva Las Vegastampsin iloinen kukkaistyttö sopi siihen ihan mainiosti.

Innostuin jopa kokeilemaan ensi kertaa kukkaiskoristeita sivuun. En tykästynyt niihin heti alkuun, mutta askartelutarvikkeiden suhteen on joskus hauska muuttaa mieltään!

Pallokuvioinen nauha on Askartelu Amaliasta. Viininpunainen, tarrapohjainen ornamenttinauha oli kesälomareissun löytö Tukholman Pandurosta.

Something New: Beeswax Collage

It's been too long since I last posted, but I've been busy both with art and other duties. Mostly other duties. However, the other day I was able to try yet another new technique that I'd long been long tempted to try! That's beeswax collage with napkins. It's kind of like decoupage but with more see-through layers.

Napkin, tissue papers and other thin, soft, nearly transparent papers are good, too. The paper needs to let the melted beeswax through, otherwise it won't glue on properly. I melted the beeswax with a craft iron, first melt it on the card, then glue on first layer, then more wax and so on. I was quite excited and slightly scared about how messy it might be, let alone if the wax started to burn or something. So I didn't even think of taking how-to-do photos this first time!



But it wasn't that bad. The beeswax melts little by little and does not stream all over. However, the iron should be an old-fashioned one without the steam holes or teflon coating, and dedicated to crafting. No more ironing of clothes after this! If you want to use your ironing board for clothes still, it's a good idea to protect it with an old pillowcase or t-shirt first (make it tight so it does not move) and then on top of it a sheet of baking paper.

The beeswax works both as a glue and a sealant here. This is a very fast technique but I recommend cutting lots of pieces cut ready before you put the iron on. I made about 10 ATCs, a chunky page and some backgrounds in two short sessions. I wasn't happy with all of them but here are the ones I like the best, 3 ATCs and a chunky 4x4 page. I love the ethereal looking results, where all the layers really seem to melt together!

These cards were made for trades at ATCs for All.



Jotain uutta taas: Mehiläisvahakollaasi

Viimeisestä postauksesta on ihan liian kauan, muut velvollisuudet veivät kaiken aikani viime viikkoina. Viikonloppuna pääsin pitkästä aikaa kokeilemaan jotain uutta, mitä mieleni oli pitkään tehnyt testata, nimittäin kollaasia sulatetulla mehiläisvahalla. Tekniikka muistuttaa decoupagea, mutta lopputuloksena on läpinäkyvämmät kerrokset.

Sulaa vahaa valutetaan korttipohjaan ja paperia lisätään kerros kerrallaan. Paperin on hyvä olla pääasiallisesti ohutta ja huokoista, joka päästää vahan lävitseen, kuten servettiä tai silkkipaperia. Pienempiä palasia voi olla myös tavallista paperia, esimerkiksi kirjansivut tai nuottipaperit ovat kiva lisä. Sulattamiseen on saatavilla jonkinmoisia patoja (engl. melting pot, en ole Suomessa nähnyt), jolloin voi käyttää myös rakeena myytävää mehiläisvahaa.

Itse päätin testata helpoksi kuvattua tekniikkaa eli askartelukäyttöön omistettua silitysrautaa. Silitysraudalla sekä sulatetaan vaha että silitetään kuva kiinni korttiin. Tässä menetelmässä vahan pitää olla pötkönä, jota pidetään kädessä silitysraudan pohjaa vasten. Helsingin Hobby Point myy mehiläisvahaa kynttiläntekoon tarkoitettuina levyinä. Pyöritin levyn rullalle, jotta sain siitä pötkön. En osannut yhtään arvioida vahan menekkiä etukäteen, mutta aika riittoisaa se on. Nyt on noin puolet jäljellä yhdestä levystä, joka maksoi alle kolme euroa.



En uskaltanut ajatellakaan valokuvaamista eri vaiheita, koska ajattilen homman voivan olla tosi sotkuista, tai pahimmillaan, että palohälytin repeäisi ulvomaan keskellä yötä! Vaha ei kuitenkaan sulanut virtanaan vaan sopivasti pikkuhiljaa. Raudan on hvyä olla teräspintainen ilman teflonpintaa ja höyryreikiä. Sen kuumuutta vaihtelin yhden ja kahden pisteen välillä.

Silityslautaa ei tarvitse uhrata pelkästään askartelukäyttöön, mutta se kannattaa suojata hyvin. Vanha tyynyliina, t-paita tai muu kangas, jonka saa pysymään paikoillaan, on hyvä. Päälle laitoin vielä leivinpaperin ja se toimi hyvin. Toisella kertaa se oli loppu ja käytin alumiinifoliota, joka ei ollut yhtä hyvä. Kortti alkoi tarttua kiinni folioon, kun siihen oli valunut vahaa.



Kollaasielementtejä kannattaa leikata valmiiksi etukäteen aika paljon, sillä kuuma rauta ja vaha eivät jouda odottelemaan. Toki raudan voi sammuttaa ja lisätä kerroksia myöhemmin. Tällä tekniikalla loihtii tosi nopeasti kauniita kortteja, joissa kerrokset sulautuvat ikäänkuin läpinäkyvästi yhteen. Lisäksi saa nauttia ihanasta mehiläisvahan tuoksusta!

Sewing: A Chunky Page

I love sewing, and everything that relates to that: fabrics, ribbons, buttons, and of course my old faithful sewing machine! Sewing was this week's challenge at Take a Word.

For this piece, I tried both a new card format and a new background technique and am excited about both! The card sixe is 4x4 inches and it's called a chunky. They are usually made of a bit sturdier backing than ATCs so they're tough enough to become a book if you want to. You can punch one hole on top left or several on the left side, and collect a whole book of the same theme!

I want to collect these now, too, and sewing might well be the theme of my first chunky book. The pages can be traded in the same way as ATCs.



The background was a result of simply experimenting and I was really happy with it! I did not remember to take a complete series of "How to" pictures, but here's a photo of when the background was done.



It's made of decoupaged napkins, but instead of a decoupage glue, I used white acrylic gesso to attach the teared napkins. So the first layer was gesso and then a napkin layer, then again some gesso and napkin scraps.

I added some gesso to even out the wrinkled background in places where the rub-on sewing machine and the stamped button border would be. At this point it seemed to need a bit of another colour than violet and white, so I added a bit of orange yellow acrylic paint.

The sewing machine is a rub-on from Hambly Screen Prints. Buttons border stamp is by Lost Coast Designs, Versamark ink and the Purple Puff for embossing the buttons is by Wow Embossing Powders. All stamping products are from my local craft shop Askartelu Amalia and the artists' supplies from Tempera. My acrylic paints are brands called Amsterdam and Royal & Talens and the gesso is from Pebeo.
