A simple, matter-of-fact explanation for why there will be no further civilizations, gear, quests, or features added to Age of Empires Online, Microsoft's free-to-play RTS. Like Microsoft Flight, which suffered a similar fate shortly after launch, AoEO will continue to operate as it does now, and some bugs will be fixed, but there's nothing new in the pipe. A bit sad, really, as after its major business model revamp it's become a very friendly game for single-player and co-op RTS players. Yesterday, Gas Powered Games teased a new pro civilization would be introduced with the upcoming Age of Empires Online anniversary update. The studio mysteriously labeled this new civ "the Annies." Timing, she is everything. I recently spent far too many agonizing hours grinding for units in Age of Empires Online, a solid game trapped behind a near impenetrable wall of a free-to-play business model. If only I'd written my Free Agent feature a week later. AoE Online is now on Steam (adios, Games for Windows Live), and its launch brings with it a major patch that does away with the MMO-like grind.
