Civilization V: Gods & Kings Review

PC Reviews | Jun 19, 2012

It's not easy to add entirely new mechanics to a carefully-crafted strategy game like Civilization V. Gods & Kings takes two elements that were specifically excluded from Civ V, religion and espionage, and introduces them to a game that was engineered to be as tight as a drum and sometimes as confining as a straitjacket. The results are better than you might expect, but don't expect miracles from gods or kings: Civilization V remains the same game you've always known. Read More »

Developer Diary Details Religion, Espionage in Civilization V: Gods & Kings

PC News | Jun 18, 2012

Ever imagined how rad it would be to start your own religion with you as its almighty leader? Well guess what, Proto-Popes, Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods & Kings is going to let you do just that. According to the developer diary below, all you have to do is wait for a prophet to show up, and then your people get real religious. Gosh, if it was that easy, why didn't I think of it before? Think of all the funny hats I could be wearing! Read More »

Learn About Civilization V: Gods & Kings in New Trailer

PC News | Jun 13, 2012

One of the most interesting things about the Civilization games is how they represent historical facts through gameplay. For example, in the upcoming Civilization V expansion Gods & Kings, Ethiopia's ability to defend itself from European colonialists is represented by a combat bonus attained when its cities are outnumbered. Attila the Hun's famous raiding ability is shown off with a massive battering ram that replaces traditional spearmen units. To further show off how the folks at Firaxis are representing the nine new civilizations in the expansion, check out the trailer. Read More »

Fun with Civilization 5: Gods & Kings' Religion System

PC News | May 10, 2012

Earlier today we covered how Religion works in Civilization V: Gods & Kings: Like L. Ron Hubbard, you can create, name, and customize your very own faith and spread it around the world and use it to advance your civilization. Now that we know how to use it, it's time to abuse it for the purposes of spreading juvenile humor around the globe. Read More »

Comparing Notes on Civilization 5: Gods & Kings

PC Previews | May 10, 2012

When 2K and Firaxis announced the Civilization 5: Gods & Kings expansion, turn-based strategy fans in the GameSpy offices gave a standing ovation to the return of religion and espionage, and a promise of a much-needed combat revamp. Now that I've had a chance to go hands-on with a preview build, it's time to look back through my notes and compare and contrast what I played with what was promised. So, how'd it do? Let's take a look. Read More »

Sid Meier's Civilization V (PC)

Also available on: Macintosh

Features

  • A Wealth of New Content -- 27 new units, 13 new buildings, nine new wonders, and nine new playable civilizations all highlight this grand expansion pack. Among the new civilizations are the Netherlands (William I, Prince of Orange), the Celts (Boudicca), and the Mayans (Pacal the Great).
  • Religion -- Quite possibly the most requested major addition to Civilization V, the Gods & Kings expansion offers a new "Faith" resource that enables you to found your own religion and grow it from a simple Pantheon of the Gods to a world-spanning fully-customized religion.
  • Reworked Combat System -- Combat has been reworked, as has the AI, placing more emphasis on balanced army composition. Among the changes to the combat system is the addition of melee naval units, which will force you to really rethink the way you execute your naval assaults.
  • Enhanced Diplomacy, with Espionage -- In addition to being able to establish embassies with your rival civilizations, spies will now be an important part of how you conduct your foreign affairs. Surveiling foreign cities, stealing advanced techs, and garnering influence with city-states are some of the things you'll be able to do with this new powerful mechanic.
  • New City-States -- With religion being added to the game, it only made sense to introduce Religious city-states which will interact with your religion in special ways. In addition, Mercantile city-states will be attractive for those of you who love to grow your civilization's treasury. All city-states will use the greatly expanded quest system, making city-states more dynamic and diplomatic victories more challenging, while decreasing the importance of gold when dealing with city-states.
  • New Scenarios -- Three new scenarios are included in Civilization V: Gods & Kings. Experience the fall of Rome, explore the medieval era, and my personal favorite: a unique scenario in a Victorian science-fiction setting.
