A new report states a multiplayer mode is a "certainty" in Rocksteady Studios' upcoming Batman sequel, but exactly how Arkham City will incorporate online play remains a mystery worthy of the World's Greatest Detective.

The latest issue of PSM3 breaks the news that Batman: Arkham City will feature multiplayer, though the magazine's scribes simply state "no details on this yet." While multiplayer is typically associated with team vs. team deathmatches, it can also refer to co-op play.

Ever since Rocksteady revealed Catwoman as a major character to be featured in the game, rumors have circulated she will be a playable sidekick in co-op. Given some of the promo images we've seen of Catwoman and Batman standing back-to-back, it's possible the developer was dropping a major hint.

Batman: Arkham City is being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PCs. The game is slated for a fall 2011 release.



Sharkey says: Count me among those that thinks a deathmatch mutiplayer of some sort is completely unnecessary. However, I'd be very interested in playing co-op with a friend as another character from the Batman universe. Catwoman would be cool, but could there be a Robin or perhaps Nightwing announcement in the pipeline?
