Every so often a game comes along and makes your PC do something you never thought was possible. PlanetSide 2 is one such game. The sheer size and scope of its constant 2,000-player warfare has to be seen to be believed. We've hopped into a fighter and flown several kilometers to the front lines, shot down two enemies before ejecting (and seeing our plane explode as we fall), used a jetpack to land safely, and joined a platoon engaged in a ground battle below to successfully wrest a base from enemy control. It's chaotic. It's exhilarating. And it's spectacular.
The fact that it's free to play -- in a fair way -- makes it that much more of a modern PC gaming marvel. The fact that anyone who buys a new PC can easily jump into PlanetSide 2 and have a first-person shooter experience that's just plain bigger and in many ways more spectacular than anything anywhere else for free is a reason to celebrate it.
Chief Criticisms: Needs better tutorials; requires a good CPU.
