I imagine Tux, the penguin mascot for Linux, is doing the Happy Feet dance today. Valve has officially launched its Steam for Linux client, potentially introducing the 22-year-old open source operating system to a massive new audience.

You can now download the Linux Steam client from the Ubuntu Software Center, and once you're up and running, you'll find more than 50 Linux games on Steam, all with prices slashed in honor of the launch by 50-75%. Of note, FTL is $5, Trine 2 is $3.75, Frozen Synapse is $6.25, and Bastion is $3.75. Find all the deals (which will run through Feb. 21) at the Steam for Linux Celebration Sale.

Big step for Valve, and the launch instantly makes me wonder where the studio is in terms of revealing its Linux-powered living room PC. Hopefully we'll find out at GDC in a couple weeks.
