I believe:

(a) That there is no personal god or life after death

(b) That the most desirable thing in the world is freedom to be true to oneself, i.e., Honesty

(c) That the only difference between human beings is intelligence

(d) That the only criterion of an action is its ultimate effect on making the individual happy or unhappy

(e) That it is wrong to deprive any man of life

(h) I believe, furthermore, that an ideal state should be a strong centralized one with government control of public utilities, banks, mines, + transportation and subsidy of the arts, a comfortable minimum wage, support of disabled and age[d]. State care of pregnant women with no distinction such as legitimate + illegitimate children.

... E o que significa ser-se jovem em idade e ficar subitamente desperta para a angústia e para a urgência da vida?

É ser-se um dia alcançada pelas reverberações daqueles que não seguem, tropeçando para fora da selva e para cair num abismo:

É, então, ser cega aos defeitos dos rebeldes, é ansiar com dor, completamente, por todos os opostos da existência da infância. É impetuosidade, entusiasmo selvagem, imediatamente submergido num dilúvio autodepreciativo. É a cruel consciência da nossa própria presunção...

É humilhação em cada palavra em falso, noites em branco passadas a ensaiar a conversa de amanhã e a torturarmo-nos pelas de ontem... uma cabeça baixa segura entre as mãos... é «meu deus, meu deus»... (em minúsculas, é claro, porque não há deus nenhum).

É retracção de sentimentos em relação à família e a todos os ídolos da infância... é mentir... e ressentimento, e depois ódio...

É o surgimento do cinismo, um esquadrinhar de todos os pensamentos, de todas as palavras, de todas as acções. («Ah, para ser perfeitamente, absolutamente sincera!»)
É um amargo e avassalador questionar de motivos...
