Artist Profile - Patricia Gray

ART BY DESIGN

An interior designer finds the right moment to exercise her gifts as an artist
Patricia Gray Interior Design | Fine Art
Patricia Gray has made a name for herself as an interior designer in Vancouver, building a career and reputation over a 40-year span. Casting an artist’s eye on kitchens, family rooms and entire homes, she has created living spaces that are works of style and function.
And with the tools of her craft – colours, fabrics and furniture – she has used three-dimensional spaces as her canvasses.

She sells her work internationally, as well as through her website (www.patriciagrayart.com), to her interior design clients, and through other interior designers and architects.
Today, some of Gray’s design clients have collected seven or eight pieces of her artwork in their homes.

She acquires much of the inspiration for her pieces from her travels. A trip to Desolation Sound along the north coast of British Columbia, for instance, provoked and influenced some of her work. She attempted to capture the feelings that were stirred by the depth and luminosity of the water in this remote and pristine location.
Owning original artwork is something everyone should experience, Gray says. “It’s an investment in your life and your lifestyle. It enriches your surroundings. Original art can be looked at over and over and over again. You get so much more energy and vibration from it. It’s an acquired taste, something everyone should experience.”Patricia Gray Fine Art

Vancouver Yaletown Penthouse

FAMILY FRIENDLY PENTHOUSE
This is a penthouse project for a couple with two small children in Yaletown, Vancouver. It has a fantastic view that was a little overwhelming when I started on the project. There was nothing to keep your focus inside the space. I decided that I needed to be bold in my choice of finishes.

I grounded the space by adding teak panelling to the raised ceilings to mirror the teak of the floor. The furnishings and accessories were kept to a minimum to not detract from the view. The finishes had to child friendly. The dining table and countertops are Caesarstone, which is virtually indestructible. The dining room chairs were upholstered in white leatherette. The chairs are studded at the top of each leg. The chandelier was picked for its fun and whimsy. The sofa is real leather and the area carpet is wool from Belgium. The ottoman is upholstered in Cashmere, which isn't exactly child friendly but my client fell in love with it.

The back wall of the cooktop is a wonderful piece of Granite that I hand picked from the supplier, and it was with much difficulty, that they were able to install it as a slab - in one piece with no seams. It weighed approx. 600 pounds and had to be taken up to the top of the building. It looks fabulous, and hangs on the wall like a magnificent piece of artwork. I also wanted to use warm colouring & natural products to connect the space with the earth energy. The colour of the granite picks up the colour of the teak and has these beautiful charcoal grey veins running through it. I matched the paint and carpet colour to this gray veining in the granite to further accentuate the granite. The effect is better when you are in the space. You feel like you are on top of the world but at the same time the space is very warm and enveloping. The clients are happy with the end result and they are finding it family friendly and good for their frequent entertaining.

Beautiful Kitchen Design Ideas for the Heart of Your Home

Thank you Amara for the write up on my Vancouver kitchen design!

“We love how the Macassar ebony creates a dramatic backsplash and is used to frame the integrated fridge and plumbed coffee machine. Starphire glass is used as a backsplash behind the cooktop and the floating stainless steel shelf creates a convenient storage and display for dishes. Task lighting was also incorporated into the shelf. The mirrored wall above the shelf creates depth and reflects light. Corian countertops are used. We like to design kitchens with a 39” counter top height (against the standard 36” height) as we find this more ergonomic. Commercial grade appliances are by Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele and Asko. The island also features a warming drawer.”

The space where the sofa sits was previously an unused guest bedroom. By removing the wall between this room and the before cramped living room, we were able to double the living space and increase the outstanding view of the Lions Gate Bridge, Stanley Park Marina and West Vancouver mountains.

Patricia Gray 'TAKING IT OUTDOORS' The Vancouver Sun

Interior designer Patricia Gray has two decks, which she has done up as outdoor living spaces: one for lounging and the other for dining. The Vancouver Sun, Business Section.

TAKING IT OUTDOORS
New fabrics, products fuelling trend to expand livable space.

"A lot of clients are downsizing from houses and moving downtown, so they don't have yards," said Patricia Gray of Patricia Gray Interior Design, who specializes in downtown condos. Greater product range and lower prices for outdoor heating units have helped extend usability into cooler weather, and advancing textile technology means beautiful fabrics including weather-resistant velvets and chenilles are now available for outdoor use. "If you're spending on average $1.000.00 a square foot to live downtown for indoor space, a 100-square-foot deck... equates to $100,000.00 of real estate," Gray said. "You're furnishing your million-dollar condo beautifully. What are you going to put on the deck? Rubbermaid? No."

Gray who has been in business for 33 years, says requests for outdoor design have increased "exponentially" during the last five years. She believes the driver has been a combination of high real estate prices along with increased technological sophistication in out-door fabrics.

Because the price for real estate is so high, this makes economic sense," Gray said. "We've got these fabrics now and some are beautiful enough, we use them for indoors. I'm upholstering (indoor) sofas in them for clients who have dogs and kids. They're like chenilles and velvets but you can hose them down."

Clients will spend $20,000.00 on an outdoor fireplace, electric heaters, seating and artificial grass.

"We did a beautiful balcony for clients where we put down artificial grass, 20 stories in the sky. He's a golfer and we wanted to put a little putting green up there for him, 20 feet long. We put a beautiful granite bear sculpture out there done by an artist from Whistler. Lit at night. When I do balconies, they are part of the indoors because you are looking out at them."
