Creative Confetti: Sketch It Out!

Hello friends, and Happy Tuesday! So, my sweet stamping friends, how are you faring these days? I pray well and I pray that you and your family are safe and sound and free from harm. I don't know about you but I am becoming quite the home body. I never loved cooking and have turned the corner and am trying new recipes. I'm picking up new crafts. I am writing more letters and mailing them than I have before. I am going to glass half full this. I hope you are too!

Well, today, I thought I'd dip into the vault of some of my previous creations, be inspired and challenge you ALL to create using the sketch that I whipped up! I know you all love a good sketch challenge, so I decided to make that the focus of this week's Creative Confetti!

HOW TO PLAY: Simply use the sketch below any way you like! Switch up the shape, flip the sketch on it's side or, heck, turn it upside down if that inspires you! Just make sure that we can "see" the original sketch in your card!

So, here's a peek at the sketch....

And here's a look at one way to put it into play!

I created this card a while back using Power Poppy's digital stamp called Tree Peony.  While my sketch shows layering paper, I created my layer by using a fine tip black marker and a little Copic marker to color up an accent. I used Copic markers to color it all up and one of the accents I love is the addition of Nuvo Crystal Drops to add some of those dew drops that you see. I should mention, the sentiment is from a clear stamp set called Burst of Kindness.

Here's a closeup!

So, folks, it is just that simple! Let's see your take on this sketch! After you are done creating, share by linking your card up using the linky below! One of my favorite things about this challenge is the fact that every single entry will be in the running for a $25 gift card to the Power Poppy Shop! Play multiple times during the month? That means multiple chances to win!

So, get those fingers inky and.... good luck!

Artist's Notebook: Are You Stamp-Blind? 4 Tips to Open Your Eyes & Improve Your Coloring

Want to improve your Copic Marker or colored pencil coloring? Power Poppy’s guest author Amy Shulke from VanillaArts.com offers artistic coloring tips for Copic Markers or colored pencil. | VanillaArts.com | #realistic #howtocolor #copic

I love to color Power Poppy digital stamps with Copic Markers and colored pencils. But I’m a coloring instructor so I draw and color daily. Your hobby is my day job.

My hobby? I l bake bread. I’m nerdy, so when I bake bread, I geek-out. Old recipes, odd ingredients... I’ve even cultured my own yeast. I enjoy baking the same way you enjoy coloring. It’s relaxing fun.

But here’s the difference: when I make bread, I don’t staple the recipe to every single slice. I don’t announce with a bullhorn “Hey everybody, before you take a bite of my bread, please note that I used Gold Medal Flour and Morton's Salt!”

But in coloring? You advertise your supplies all the time.

And you don’t even realize it.

Hello, my name is Amy Shulke. I’m the illustrator and art instructor over at VanillaArts.com. Today, let's talk about Stamp Blindness and how to cure it.

Over the past several months here at Power Poppy, we’ve explored how Artistic Coloring differs from traditional coloring, how to take the first step to adding artistry to your projects, and even why you should try coloring as big as your printer will allow.

But there’s one little thing that most colorers never think about when they switch to realistic coloring.

And yet it’s incredibly important to artistry.

You are blind and you don’t even realize it

Whether you use physical stamps or digitals, the stamping process is the first step of every project. It’s like breathing or blinking, you don’t even think about stamping.

Ahhhh… You are the fish who doesn’t realize he’s wet.

You’ve handled stamps so much that you’re blind to them.

You spend 100% of your time thinking about the space inside the lines. What color should I use? Where does the shade go?

You look at other people’s coloring projects and you focus 100% on what they did inside the lines. How many markers did they use? Where did they put the shade?

But the rest of the world doesn’t stamp.

It doesn’t matter how pretty you color. All we see are your big fat honkin’ stamp lines.

We see the stamp lines you don’t even notice.

And I hate to break it to you, those big black stamp lines are the difference between:

My mom colors some stuff.

and

My mom is an amazing artist!

I’m not saying all stamp lines are bad

There is a time and place for effective black stamp lines. Good line art is beautiful. Bold outlines can make a strong artistic statement.

But black ink should not be your automatic reflex.

Black lines overwhelm most coloring projects. My Sunburst project here wouldn’t be nearly as delicate or feminine if everything were outlined in thick black ink.

No-Line, Invisible Line, Barely-There, or Naked As a Jaybird Stamping… whatever you want to call it…

Every day should be a no line day.

Here are four tips for making the transition to No-Line as easy as possible.

1. Gradually Go Lighter

I recommend printing in a gray or pink ink. Stamp or print as soft and pale as possible...

But don’t go cold turkey all at once!

For ink pads, gradually work your way from black, to gray, to a paler gray. For digital stamps, use your opacity slider. Incrementally move the percentage lower. Give yourself several projects to make the transition.

Don’t jump from black to barely-there in one project.

Black outlines are like training wheels. It takes time to get used to the feeling of less linework. You
don’t know how much you’ve been relying on black lines to carry the image until they’re gone. So don’t shock yourself, fade them out slowly.

2. Edges Require More Thought

Black lines encourage sloppy coloring. Sometimes you color just up to the line, sometimes you color up onto the line. You only care if you go beyond the lines, right? Because that's the only time your edges really show.

That security blanket is gone with no line coloring.

Not only will you have to color neatly now, you also have some decisions to make.

When a stamp has very thick lines, you must decide where one object stops and the other starts.

In Tree Peony, every petal forces me to decide where to stop one petal and where to start the next— should I color just up to the line or should I color over it?

There is no right or wrong answer, it’s all up to your taste. But now for the first time, you’re forced to think about it.

3. Don’t Leave Ghost Lines

This doesn’t happen with everyone but let me point it out, just in case.

Some black-line colorers are very neat and tidy. They’ve spent years coloring right up to the edge of the black line and they never, never, never go over it.

Then they switch to gray lines and do the same thing. It doesn’t look good.

In No-Line coloring, if you don’t hide the lines with color, then it’s not really No-Line coloring, is it?

4. Print a reference stamp

Many people are afraid of No-Line coloring because the color usually hides the original stamp lines.

Then you get lost.

As I colored the leaves on Tree Peony, I lost the veins. I could see a few of them but most were gone. Marcella's veins are a beautiful detail, I really didn't want to lose them!

I always keep a copy of the uncolored original stamp by my side.

When I feel like I’ve lost the shape or a detail, I can easily refer back to Marcella’s original drawing. I may not add it back exactly the way Marcella drew it, but I can restore the general feeling.

So here’s my Artist’s Notebook challenge for you this month...

Dig out that soft gray ink pad that scares you. Find the Opacity settings on your computer and turn it down a notch or two.

Make your next Power Poppy impression paler than usual.

Start learning to color with neat, crisp edges that you make yourself rather than letting the stamp lines hide your oopsies.

Start thinking about the shape of the object. Understand the petals, stamens, and stem of the a flower instead of relying on Power Poppy to tell people which parts are what.

Start interpreting your stamps as art. You be the artist, you be the story teller!

Now, to give us a dose of inspiration, we have
another sweet treat!

We have a fabulous guest joining us today to share not only the fun-filled color cues but a card she made to show it off! Let's meet...

Hello everyone! I'm Francine Dodwell. I’ve always been able to say I’m a “Born and Raised So. Cal. Girl,” until four years ago when my family and I found this wonderful home in a secluded area of North Idaho. I have a full-time job and in what free time I find, I enjoy spending it outside hiking, camping, fishing, snowshoeing and learning about the outdoors.  I think that is a part of why I love Marcella’s stamps. When I can’t be outside, I can enjoy her lovely creations inside.  She is such an amazing artist.  I love how she captures and combines various unique flowers and leaves and creates a beautiful image to enjoy.

I have been creative since I was little. I was always involved in something -- making banners for school, sewing and crocheting projects, or making gifts for holidays, to name a few. Within the last year, cardmaking has resurfaced in my life and I am so in awe of how the industry has grown.  I love all the different companies, products, techniques; there is so much to explore!

FRANCINE'S CARD

The project I am sharing today started with Power Poppy’s digital image: Tree Peony.  Power Poppy has a wonderful tutorial HERE on how to use digital images.  Digital images give you a bit of creativeness while keeping with the artist's original image. You can resize the image, flip the image, layer with other images -- there is so much you can do with a digital image.  I love how the Peony flower is so big and bold, so I choose to enlarge the image so it would just about fill the size of an A2 (4.25 x 5.5”) card.

I printed the image on paper designed for pencil coloring and used my Prismacolor pencils to showcase this amazing flower.  Pencil coloring is very relaxing and I simply colored away petal by petal through the flower.  I love how Marcella’s includes shading and highlighting, so as you progress you can easily tell where to use a dark shadow or a lighter highlight. When I finished coloring the peony, I found a piece of rose pink paper to compliment the red.  On the rose pink paper, I used a white gel pen and a ruler added some lines and dots to accent the paper.  I then trimmed around the peony and layered it on the pink background paper.  To create the tag sentiment, I adjusted the image size before printing on some pink paper and layering on black and adhering with foam tape.  Finally, to complete the card, I mounted on cherry red cardstock.

Thank you so much Francine! Your card is absolutely lovely and I just sighed when I saw that depth of color that you brought out in this image. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us this week! If you'd like to check up on some of Francine's other designs, all you need to do is click on over to her Instagram HERE! She has some amazing cards just oozing with creativity and color!

So take us up on this challenge and.... when you do, remember to link up your creation below! We love to see your take on our weekly color combos. They inspire! We also love to put you in the spotlight by making you, our Power Poppy Peeps, our guests here. So play along, link  up your creations and, who knows, we could be seeing you sometime soon as our hostess with the mostess!

Until next week!

Bring on the Color!

Hey Peeps! Did you check out the title of today's post? Yes, this post might just have you reaching for your shades — because it’s huge on inspiration and explosive in COLOR! It’s Friday folks, which means we've spent some time combing the creative world on the web ready to deliver just the right amount of inspiration to kick off your creative weekend!

SHALL WE TAKE A PEEK AT JUST SOME OF WHAT BRIGHTENED OUR WEEK?

Lee Ann Barrell -- stunning doesn't even begin to cover what you've accomplished here with this Azalean beauty! (Yes, I made that word up). I love the rich reds and how they play off the patterned paper and neutral backdrop -- simply a delight for the eyes! If you wondered, Lee Ann used Power Poppy's stamp set Azalea.

Goodness. Speechless folks. Seriously. Can you even imagine the time and attention given to this card above by Elizabeth Zaffarano using Power Poppy's new digital image Tree Peony? Again, speechless. The depth of color and how she so perfectly created a digital frame — Elizabeth told us she played around using GIMP, the free downloadable photo editing software —perfectly showing off the Happiest of Birthdays message! Excuse me... I need a minute here. Wow.

G-L-O-R-I-A!!! Now that you have that Van Morrison song in your head, take a gander at this card above by Gloria Stengel who, in my humble opinion, knocked it out of the park with her creation! She picked the perfect match of patterns and polka dots to make the main image sing! Gloria used Power Poppy's digital image Everything's Rosy and just to get a few little extra brownie points, she entered this card into this month's Power & Spark Pick-A-Sketch Challenge!

Check out that bold splash of color on that pristine and clean white backdrop, will you please? This is the handiwork of the talented Hazel Parr and this creation most definitely grabbed my attention. I love the die cut backdrop paired with a kind of ombre sentiment and the beautiful digital image Countryside Bouquet taking center stage. What was the most touching about this card was the fact that Hazel took time out of her day to make it for a family friend who lost the love of her life. The woman loves flowers and so Hazel wanted to "brighten up her home which was darkened" from her loss. Truly thoughtful.

Leslie Miller is ALREADY making her list and checking it twice -- in April! Apparently, this wonder woman makes so many Christmas cards, she has to start NOW! Kudos to you my friend and former Bloomie! Major kudos to you! If you check out her post HERE, you'll see not only this card but two others that are decked out in Christmas spirit using Power Poppy's stamp set Fully Stocked. And, while you're hopping over to Leslie's place, be sure to check out THIS card she did with Power Poppy’s set Peony Muse. It’s another sure-fire hit.

Well, how's that for inspiration? It kind of, sort of rocks now doesn't it? And, my sweet stamping friends, there is MORE! Be sure to check out the Bloomies below and their fabulous works of (he)art this week!

Be sure to swing by Monday when Nancy Sheads will be in the house with an AMAZING tutorial on how to get the most out of your digital stamps AND your digital paper cutters! This tutorial rocked my world and I know it will yours as well.

AND JUST A NOTE: Don't forget this month's Power & Spark Pick-A-Sketch Challenge. Next week Kathy Jones will be here to share a brand new challenge for May! So get those fingers inky before April is out of the picture! ;-)

See you back here soon!

Digis on the 5s release: Tree Peony

I’ve been wanting to release an image of this plant since we very first started Power Poppy, but here we are in our third year and it seems that now is the perfect time. Folks are getting so into coloring large flowers it seems, and this one is large and in charge! In fact, its blooms can be up to 8" across. Acres of petalage, gorgeously cut foliage, and the prettiest shades of color you’ve ever seen. What is this plant? Check out the image above that I painted for the gardening catalog I designed back in 1995 for my dear clients, Klehm Nursery (now named Klehm’s Song Sparrow Farm and Nursery). It’s the Tree Peony, the most exquisite and rare of all peonies (in my opinion!)

The woody cousin of herbaceous peonies, Tree Peonies have much larger blooms, more exotic coloration, and dazzling frilly centers. The foliage is quite striking in itself, and is a lighter green than regular peonies. They grow to become large shrubs and make a huge statement wherever they are planted. Take a look at a few wonderful cultivars from the collection at Klehm’s Song Sparrow:

Tree Peony ‘Anna Marie’ - Source Klehm’s Song Sparrow
Tree Peony ‘Joseph Rock’ - Source: Klehm’s Song Sparrow
Tree Peony ‘Terpischore’ - Source Klehm’s Song Sparrow
Tree Peony ‘Marchioness’ - Source Klehm’s Song Sparrow
Tree Peony ‘Guardian of the Monastery’ - Source Klehm’s Song Sparrow
Aren’t those MAGNIFICENT?? Even just looking at the photos, I feel a bit faint. They have a pretty good collection of them in the Chinese Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden, which I’ve photographed quite a few times, and will be sharing photos on my Instagram for coloring inspiration! I also have a large one in my garden which only gave me four blooms this year (sigh, not in enough sun for it’s liking). In the meantime, let’s get to the new stamp set....

Say hello to our newest downloadable digital set: Tree Peony! It comes with one swoopy birthday sentiment that you can color in to match the flower.

I’m releasing this today, just a few days ahead of what would have been my mother’s 73rd birthday. She had a few plants that she treasured above all else, and we all know that one of those plants was Daffodils. The other: Tree Peonies! I am sure you can see why, they are rare, exquisite, and totally awe-inspiring.

Today we have two designers showing off this lovely new design, don’t you want to see what they’ve created to inspire you? Let’s go see their cards using Tree Peony:

Enjoy your day, and I’m going to try to color this one up to share here, posted a bit later... I started to color but my sweet Douglas had been out of town for 5 days and he got home earlier than expected — as if I’m going to color when I can be squeezing on that man! But today is a new day!! I hope you enjoy this one, I think it’s got a LOT of possibilities!

ADDENDUM: I was able to sit outside and paint this morning for a few hours, and here’s my contribution to the garden of Tree Peonies....
