Inspire Me Monday: Fun Little Folds

Hey everybody! Welcome to another Inspire Me Monday! Today I have a fun little project for you that is a little non-standard but fits in a standard size envelope. Recently, I was surfing and someone created a card somewhat like this and it stuck in my head. Go figure, when I tried to get back to where that idea was, I couldn't find it, so these dimensions and how I created my card are probably a wee bit of my own making! ;-) When I find things like this, I love sharing with a Power Poppy spin on them!

Here's a peek at the card we'll be making....

You will start with a strip of paper that measures 5-1/2" by 12". This will be your card base, so be sure to use a kind of paper with enough bulk. You'll want to score this piece along the shortest width at the 6" line.

From here, fold your piece, setting the fold along the 0" edge of your scoring device and score 4-1/4" to the right side of the fold.

Now, flip your card 180 degrees so that the piece you just scored is now on your left-hand side. Now, again, to the right side of the fold, score at the 3-1/2" line. Once you've folded these pieces toward the middle of your card front, you'll have something that looks like this below. The inner fold is a valley fold and the outer fold is a mountain fold.

I didn't want these flaps to protrude so much into my card, so I trimmed both flaps so that they were an inch in width. Now they lay nicely and don't take up too much of my card front. You'll see why this is important in a minute!

From here, I cut two pieces of coordinating card stock to measure 1" by 5-1/2".

I then adhered these two pieces to each of my two flaps.

Before I finished the front, I wanted to make two pieces to serve as the inside of my card. I opened the digital stamp set Forget-Me-Not Heart in my Photoshop Elements and then changed the color of it to match my green paper. These pieces measure 3-3/4" by 5" and then 3" by 5". I wanted to have a nice amount of border around these pieces. The sentiment is from the polymer set called Chrysanthemum XL, which is retired.

Now, with any folds like this, you know it's hard to close your card, so, that's why we create those fun belly bands on cards -- to keep everything in its place! :-)

And... that's what I did. I took a piece of paper that was 12" by 1-1/2" and folded it around my card, trimming off the excess and securing it in the back with double-sided tape. Some people choose to score this piece but I have never had any luck doing this with the proper measurements. My band is either too big or too small forcing bad words to come out of my mouth. So, instead, I lightly fold the strip around my card and follow up with a bone folder to make that edge crisp!

From there, I printed off another Forget-Me-Not Heart, making it a wee bit smaller than the ones I used on the inside. Since I was using the blank heart portion of this set, I wanted a different sentiment and chose the one from the Camellias digital set "Life is Better with Friends." I colored it up with Copic markers and chose shades that would match my cardstock. My blue is a little bolder than the colors on my paper but I love how "cheery" it is!

And, here's a little close-up for you! I did add a wee bit of glitter to the insides of my flowers. I can't resist. I just can't resist glitter!

And that, my friends, is it! A fun little fold that keeps the person you give your card to guessing a wee bit! Not to mention, it's super fun and extra easy to make! If you end up making a version of this, please include a link in the comments! I'd love to see how yours turned out!

Have a fun and creative week!

Creative Confetti: Small & Sassy!

Hello all and Happy Tuesday!
Gosh, I made it here just in the nick of time, didn't I? It's been a crazy week at the Koerber house, so thanks for waiting for me! How is your New Year going? I hope 2020 is off to a rip roarin' good start for each and every one of you!

With the new calendar, we have a new creative beginning! Who is ready? I know I am and can't wait to usher in a whole host of new challenges and different ways to spice up our weekly gathering. Get ready for some fun things down the road! Also, be sure to stick around to the end of this post when we unveil who was the winner of our December Creative Confetti Challenge!

Recently, I was in my craft room trying to scale back and organize and I stumbled upon some 4-1/2" square envelopes. They were so cute really. I know, it's an illness when we call an envelope cute but bear with me because those square little envies sparked this challenge!

HOW TO PLAY:
All you need to do is, just as the graphic suggests, create a card that's smaller than the typical A-2 size, which is 4.25" by 5.5". Anything goes! You can even choose a different shape. Make it square. Use a die-cut to create a circle card, whatever your little heart desires. Just do one thing -- make it small and sassy! ;-)

On to my creations!

Being that I had a stack of these envelopes, I thought it might be fun to create not one, but a whole set of cards that maybe I could give as a gift. I have a few friends who really love these for birthdays and low and behold, one of them has a birthday coming up! So, winner, winner, chicken dinner!

I started with the digital stamp set by Power Poppy called Forget-Me-Not Heart. I love this image because the flowers are just as sweet as can be and you can color it up in a jiffy. It made creating four of these cards a breeze! I started by opening up the file and used the heart with the sentiment "Thank You" already placed inside. I grabbed my Copic Markers and went to town coloring! All four cards had leaves colored up with YG00, YG23 and YG25. For the flowers below, I used R81, R83 and R85. All centers of the flowers were colored with Y11 and Y17. Then, when all was done, the centers were dabbed with a wee bit of white gel pen, just for a little extra something!

The petals on this card were colored with B60, B63 and B66. Using the blank Forget Me Not Heart, I added different sentiments to each of the remaining cards. For this one, I used the sentiment from the digital stamp set Pure Prairie Bouquet.

The petals here took on Y02 and Y11 and the sentiment was from Power Poppy's Easy Breezy Coneflower digital stamp set.

And this one was colored with BG11, BG13 and BG15. The sentiment was from the Camellias digital stamp set.

The fun part of creating this little four-card set was that I used four base cards from a set I bought at Michaels that offered up all kinds of colors and patterns in one box set with envelopes. I simply trimmed them all down to create a 4-1/4 by 4-1/4" square -- perfect for my little 4-1/2" envelopes! What I trimmed off the cards, I used as accents on the others. It couldn't have worked out any better! I added some little enamel dots and popped some of the die-cut hearts with foam tape and.. ta-da! I was done! All in all, it only took me a little more than an hour to whip up these four cards and now, I have some on hand for a friend! I will probably make a little coordinating box for these, perfect for gifting!

So, with that little dose of inspiration, it's your turn to create a " Small & Sassy" card and then, when you're done, be sure to link it up using the linky below! Every link during the month of January will be added to our random drawing for a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop!

So.... without further ado... let's get to that December
drawing winner, shall we?

After all the names were thrown into the virtual hat, this is the number drawn by Random.org!

That means our lucky stamper is.... (drum roll please!)

**** LINDA PAIDER!!! ****

And, here is a peek at Linda's beautiful creation using Power Poppy's digital stamp set Season of Serenity... just take in the beauty y'all!

Linda created this clean and classy creation after being inspired by the birds she sees while taking a gander out of her window. Sigh. I love the thought of being able to see a cardinal or two. You are lucky Linda! And your creation is just stunning! You are the lucky winner of our $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop! To claim your prize, all you need to do is email us at bloom@powerpoppy.com and Marcella will go ahead and get your code right to you! Thanks so much for sharing your artistry!

So, dear happy stampers, it's your turn! Let's see that small and sassy side come out in your creations this week! And, like I said, don't forget to link up your creation below so we can ALL see what you've whipped up!

Until next time,

Forget-Me-Not Heart, our newest digital download

While it’s a challenge for me to abide by this as a designer who loves detail and fluff, I know it to be true that the simplest design is usually the most effective. I know, seems crazy! But there’s a reason that “CAS” (clean and simple) cards have a huge place in the design landscape. They work!

Today’s gentle offering, Forget-Me-Not Heart, reflects the simplicity concept, and I am so happy to bring it to you as our newest digital download of four images!

http://powerpoppy.com/products/forget-me-not-heart

You may recognize the wisp of Myosotis, known as forget-me-nots, as the single sprig is a part of our Soothing Sympathy clear stamp set that was introduced last month. I do have a big place in my heart for this particular flower. One of my mother’s friends from her garden club, Peg Whitmire, who was the dearest, most generous soul and a huge inspiration to many, shared several forget-me-not starts with me from her garden when my children were young. She told me that the cultivar should “take off” wherever it was planted and bloom for months! It had the prettiest blue flowers, so true to the nickname of the plant, a blue you couldn’t forget! After awhile, the forget-me-nots were so plentiful, I had a field of them in the back garden, and it sent my heart leaping to see them growing so happily.

They bloomed beautifully for a few years, until a roofer dropped shingles from a roof repair right on top of my forget-me-not field — and smashed them all with the yucky shingles. They never really did recover from that! I had to remind myself that they were “just plants” and oh, how many plants I’ve failed or have failed me through my gardening career. But this one stung, because these were a gift from Peg. They live on my heart, though, as silly as that may sound.... my little field of Peggy’s forget-me-nots.

Today’s heart-shaped design, which is just so fitting for a plant with such symbolism, was inspired by the Bloom Brigade’s, Julie Koerber. Zip over to Julie’s blog post from Friday to see how the idea to form these into a heart came to be! What fun to see how we got to this place.

We have a bunch more inspiration to share using this sweet set from our Instant Gardeners and one more Bloomie, too! Won’t you come take a look — and know that you can grab Forget-Me-Not Heart from our store right now....

Have a wonderful Monday everyone!!
