Inspire Me Monday: Small Stamps, Big Impact

HEY FRIENDS! Nancy here with this week's edition of Inspire Me Monday for Power Poppy! This week I took a look at my collection of clear stamps from Power Poppy to see if I could come up with a way to use them differently. I noticed that often Marcella includes small images in addition to the main image and sentiments and I hardly ever use them. So I decided to pull out my stamps, take a closer look at that the small stamps and sentiments, and see what I could come up with.

So today, I have three different cards that use the small stamp images in different ways. For the first card, I combined images from Merry Littles with sentiments from Cozy Cupfuls. I arranged the stamps in three rows of three, inserting the sentiments between the rows.

For added interest, I staggered the order of the images so that each row was a little different. Although there are three of each image, the coloring went relatively fast since the images were small.

My second card is a variation of the first. I selected images from the Bough Wow Wow and Berry Sweet Holiday stamps sets and combined them with a sentiment form the Let it Glow stamp set. I repeated the pattern for each row instead of staggering the images.

For the last card, I selected a single image and two of the smaller sentiments from the Garden of Gratitude stamp set. I love the simplicity of this combination.

Now you could probably do this with digital images, but I found it easier to use physical stamps so I could mix and match stamps and rearrange them to find the best designs.

So pull out your stamp sets and take another look at all of those little stamps. Most of all, have some fun!

Inspire Me Monday: Holiday Inspiration - Sneak Peak!

HEY FRIENDS! Welcome back to Inspire Me Monday! Just a quick post from me today. In case you haven't noticed, new holiday digis will be arriving soon at Power Poppy. Marcella has some new and refreshed vintage designs that will be hitting the shop shortly so keep an eye out for their release.

I'm always delighted when new images are released because they're like a shot of adrenaline when my creative mojo is low. There's something about NEW that just gets the creative juices going. Plus Christine has been hosting the Blossom Challenge - this month's theme is "Gold, Silver, and Shimmer" so you can see how new holiday digis can get the wheels turning.

So this month, I thought I'd inspire you with a sneak peak of one of the new releases - this one is called Blankets and Bells. It's been chilly in my studio the past few days so coloring wool blankets was really appealing!

So here's my card:

As usual, I used lots of Copic markers. I used to be embarrassed by the fact that I used so many markers on my card, but when you have 358 markers, you tend to use them all! In all seriousness, for me, it's the only way to get depth and dimension as well as all of the variation of colors and color palettes to range from bright red ribbons to muted wool blankets.

Now I have to tell you that I forgot to take process photos. To be honest -- between the ribbon, those bells, the lantern -- this card took all of my brainpower and it never occurred to me to take any work in progress photos. At the same time, I have to tell you that it felt good to be able to slide into that level of concentration. In a fast moving, loud and always changing world, there's a lot to be said for taking the time to shut it all out and just color!

That's all from me today! See you again soon!

Inspire Me Monday: Recycled Creativity

HEY FRIENDS! I'm back this week with another edition of Inspire Me Monday. If you're like me, you're already working on your holiday cards. I love making Christmas cards - in fact, the reason that I even started down this road was because I wanted to make my own holiday cards. But I don't like to mass produce cards and get really bored making the same card multiple times. So I have to start early if I'm going to produce enough unique cards to send out to friends and family this winter.

However, my creative mojo has been seriously tested this month. My husband -- who I've lovingly nicknamed Typhoid Scott -- managed to infect both of us with Covid earlier in the month. We both had mild cases, but the fatigue lingered for days after I tested negative. And just when I was starting to feel like myself, I tested positive again with a rebound case. I'm mostly asymptomatic, but I'm back in isolation for five days.

So I'm slowly getting back into my studio and managed to completed a few projects. When I thought about this week's Inspire Me Monday post, I decided to make it easy on myself and do two things that I'm calling "recycled creativity." First, I picked an image that I've colored before -- the Season's Greenings: Planta Claus Digital Stamp Set. And second, I reused a card layout from a project I finished earlier in the week. This way I could have some fun in the studio without stressing out about color schemes, techniques, or card design.

If you’re unfamiliar with digital images, here is a video I did for Power Poppy illustrating how I print digital images. Once the image was colored (see marker list below):

  • Trim the image panel to 2-3/4 x 4-3/4 inches. Stamp the sentiment from the Season's Greenings Clear Stamp Set along the bottom as shown using Versafine ink. Apply craft foam or foam tape to the back for dimension.
  • Trim a piece of design paper to 3-1/2 x 5-1/8 inches. Adhere to a A2 cardbase, offsetting the design paper to the right side of the card as shown.
  • Stamp a sentiment from the Cozy Cupfuls Stamp Set using Versafine ink along the left side as shown.
  • Glue the image panel in place as shown, again offsetting it to the right side of the design paper.
If you need some help with the Copic coloring, I created a coloring tutorial to guide you.

So that's it for me today. See you next month!

Inspire Me Monday: Just Color!

HEY FRIENDS! Welcome to another addition of Inspire Me Monday! Today's post is short and sweet! I've been hung up lately with card design. To be honest, it is not my forte. I can color an image fairly fast, but then spend the next 8 hours trying to turn it into a card. And please don't tell me about all the ideas on Pinterest! I get overwhelmed and end up pinning crock pot recipes!

One day while complaining about my inability to quickly turn an images into cards, a friend gave me some valuable advice which I'm now going to pass along to you.

JUST COLOR!

If you only have time to work on the image, then just color! If you're not feeling particularly creative design-wise, then just color! If you only feel like coloring, then just color!

Because here's the thing - not every image needs to be immediately turned into a card. The world will keep on spinning if you have a stash of precolored images for days when the card design goddesses are smiling.

Sometimes inspiration comes
when you stop trying so hard to be inspired.

Case in point -- last week, I colored one of the images from the Mossy Pots and Paperwhites stamp set and set it aside for my stash of colored images. I planned on showing it to you today as a work in progress - a colored image, but not yet a card.

I even turned it into a coloring video! So instead of browsing Pinterest, take a look here!

While cleaning up my studio a few days later, I came across a design paper that coordinated perfectly with the markers that I had used. So I pulled out my precolored image and within minutes, I had a clean design that let the simplicity of the paperwhites shine through. Now that wasn't so hard, was it?!?

That's all from me today! I'm off to color!

Inspire Me Monday: Power Poppy Holiday Gift Tags

Hey friends! Welcome to another addition of Inspire Me Monday! The theme of this month's challenge is Christmas in July so I thought that I'd get a jump start on holiday gift tags.  I love making tags because they are quick projects that I can pull together when I’m short on crafting time. And if you make too many, you can always use them as a focal point on a holiday card or just save them until next year. They never go out of style!

LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT TODAY'S PROJECT!

The basic design of all the tags is the same starting with the Easy Layer Tag Die by Avery Elle. I like using this die set for tags because which creates two layers -- a top layer for the image and a bottom layer for a background design. If you use Copic markers, this will nicely cover the bleed through on the back of the image layer and the base is large enough to add a greeting on the back.

TAG 1 - SIMPLE JOYS

For this tag, I used the ornament image from the Simple Joys stamp set. The image was colored with the following Copic markers:
  • Ornament: B000, B00, B02, B05
  • Ornament Cap: C1, C3, C5
  • Sprig: G24, G46

TAG 2 - MOSSY POTS WITH PAPERWHITES

For this tag, I used the single Paperwhites image from the Mossy Pots with Paperwhites Stamp Set. The image is also available as Mossy Pots with Paperwhites: Accent Pieces Digital Stamp Set. The image was colored with the following Copic markers:
  • Flowers: BV000, B000, BG10
  • Moss & Foliage: YG03, YG17, YG67
  • Bulb: E31, E33
  • Bowl: BV0000, BV000, BV00
  • Shadow: BV0000, BV000

TAG 3 - SEASON'S GREENINGS

For this tag, I use an image from the Season's Greenings stamp set. This image is also available as Season's Greenings: Planta Claus Digital Stamp Set. The image was colored with the following Copic markers:
  • Skin: E00, R20
  • Beard: W1, W3
  • Hat, gloves & pants: R14, R24, R46, R59
  • Shirt: BV0000, BV000
  • Boots: N3, N5
  • Tree: R46, YG03, YG17, YG67, E35
  • Shovel: R46, YG03, YG67

FINISHING THE TAGS

Once the coloring was complete, I stamped the sentiments using a black pigment ink. For each tag, I cut a piece of design paper to 2.25" x 3.25" (the width of the tag) and adhered it to the bottom tag layer. I applied foam tape to the back of the image layer and assembled as shown.

Hope you enjoyed today's project! Thanks for stopping by!

Inspire Me Monday: Confession Time!

HEY FRIENDS! I'm back today for Inspire Me Monday with something really different for me. And I'm going to start with a confession: I've been bored lately with my Copic markers. GASP! I know, but it's true.

I'm sure I'm not the only one for whom the past year was tough. But as things open up around here, I'm feeling a weird combination of languishing, but at the same time wanting to find a new way to express myself creatively. So it was time to try something different.

Actually, I think I'm bored lately with cardmaking in general. Or maybe just overwhelmed. I feel like I have two of everything and it doesn't help that I suffer from full set syndrome. In addition to having a full set of Copic markers, I also have three full sets of colored pencils - Prismacolor Premier, Faber Castel Polychromos, and Caran d'Ache Luminance. Full sets! And I rarely use them, mainly because I've struggled finding a paper that I like. So I decided to set my Copics aside for now and experiment with my numerous colored pencil sets.

Like Copic markers, you can't just use any old paper with colored pencils and expect good results. Here you'll want a paper with a bit of tooth that can grab the pigment off the pencils. Paper is such a personal choice and I tested A LOT of papers before I found a pencil/paper combination that I liked.

My current favorite combination is Prismacolor pencils with Stonehenge Drawing Paper, especially the toned papers. The paper is 100% cotton with a slight tooth. I tend to have a heavy hand (I need to work on that!), but the paper can handle several layers of color, which is what gives colored pencil drawings their rich color and blend. I bought one of the Stonehenge Multi Pads which includes papers in warm white, natural, cream, fawn, and pearl gray. Although I started with the white paper, I found it easier to work with the pearl gray paper.

So to be really different - I pull a holiday stamp - Season's Greenings. I love the Santa image and I never got around to coloring it when the stamp was released. Since I was using the polymer set, I stamped the image with VersaFine ink. For those of you who prefer digital, the image is also available in the Planta Claus digital stamp set

First, I'll show you my finished card.

And here's what I learned along the way:

  • Allow lots of time to color. This is going to take a lot longer than coloring the same image with Copic markers. So settle in and enjoy the process.
  • Experiment with some of the toned papers. As a Copic colorist, I tend to automatically reach for white paper, but colored pencils provide a perfect excuse to try out other colors.
  • Work in layers. For the first layer, I tend to block out where I want the shadows and highlights and use the subsequent layers to refine placement and blend the colors.
  • Keep a light hand. If you press too hard on the first layer, you'll flatten the tooth and the paper won't be able to take on additional layers.
  • If your hand is getting cramp or sore, you are gripping the pencil too hard so loosen your grip. If you hold the pencil further back rather than close to the point, you will automatically lighten up on your grip and pressure on the paper.
  • I prefer a sharp pencil so I had to experiment to find a good pencil sharpener that created the point I wanted. So don't be surprised if you have to test more than one sharpener to get the perfect point for you.
  • Most of all, just have fun. Experiment with pencil combinations. You can always find suggestions on Pinterest, but use those as a starting point. You'll get to know your pencils better if you just grab some and experiment with the blends.
Thanks for joining me today! I haven't ditched my Copics entirely so be sure you check out my Power Poppy coloring videos on YouTube.

Inspire Me Monday: The Flower Bomb (that nearly bombed!)

WELCOME BACK FRIENDS! I'm here today with a project that almost didn't happen. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Yet somehow I'm here with a card that turned out just fine.

OK - so first let me tell you the card. It features a detail from the Flower Bomb Digital Stamp with a sentiment from In Praise of Sunflowers (now retired).

So right about now I would be telling you about the coloring video I created for you. Or I would be if the camera hadn't shifted the exposure so that all you could see was - well, nothing! So no process photos, no witty commentary on what I did, and no opportunity to dazzle you with my technique. Instead, here's the list of markers I used.

Next problem -- the layout I had in mind just didn't work. The papers that I had selected didn't enhance the colored image and the whole thing just looked over engineered. Sometimes the card you see in your mind's eye is much better than reality. The original image that I colored was actually a bit bigger so I trimmed it down a bit and set off to create a simpler card design.

However, that involved trying to select a new set of design papers. I could have gone with a white background except that I used X-Press It paper for the image and it has a gray tinge that looks odd against really white paper. None (and I do mean none) of my solid card stock coordinated with the marker colors I used. The B60s are hard to match with cardstock so I thought it would be easier to coordinate greens and pinks for the background.

I created a lovely stenciled background using a pale pink cardstock, a brocade stencil, and texture paste. But apparently there was a bit of black ink somewhere on the stencil that transferred into a portion of the paste so that area of the design was now dark gray. No worries! I applied white embossing powder and heat set it after the texture paste was fully dry.

And voila! A beautiful background that STILL didn't work with my colored image. Back to the drawing board. Or more accurately, at this point, it was late in the evening so I just went to bed!

The next morning, now refreshed and renewed, I announced that I was going to my studio and would not emerge until I had a completed card. My loving husband decided to bring me a light breakfast for sustenance - an English muffin with strawberry jam. Breakfast also included a beverage which turned out to be sangria because my husband -- who doesn't drink -- thinks you can use it as a substitute when you're out of orange juice. And while I didn't drink the sangria, the ensuing laughter seemed to break my design block and a card finally emerged.

Notice that I found a purplish-blue paper for the background! And while it's not the card design that I started with, I think that it's now even better. Sometimes you just have to jump through ALL the hoops to get to where you need to be in the end.

Inspire Me Monday: Easy Breeze Coneflowers!

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE! Well spring has finally arrived, at least according to the calendar. We spent last weekend at our local garden supply store to get ideas for our backyard. My husband is the gardener, but I get to pick out the flowers. It's a division of labor that I enjoy!

It's too early to plant anything here - our garden relies on a combination of containers and raised beds. We have a small water feature which my husband wants to redesign so we've been busy rearranging our equally small backyard to accommodate all the changes. But it feels good to be outside again and planning for what we hope will be a more normal future.

I plan on adding coneflowers into our backyard this year but it will be a few weeks before they are available in our garden store. In the meantime, I have to be content with coloring them so today's post features the Easy Breezy Coneflowers Digital Stamp Set in anticipation of my summer garden.

Often, I'll enlarge a digital image so that it takes up most of the card front, but I decided to downsize the image and color it on a smaller scale. But the smaller image didn't take up much real estate on the card front so I struggled awhile with the card design. I changed the card orientation from portrait to landscape and that change helped me view the layout in a different way. I've always loved the critters that Marcella adds to some of her drawings so I cropped out one of the bees in the Asters Abuzz Digital Stamp Set to add to the background and used one of the sentiments from that set. I added a honeycomb stenciled background inked in pale pink and suddenly the card came together.

Since the image is small, I didn't worry about adding a lot of detail into the petals. Instead, I stuck to a simple dark to light blend with my Copic markers.

That's all for me today! Be sure you get out and enjoy the sunshine!

Inspire Me Monday - Party Essentials

HELLO POWER POPPY FANS! I'm back today with another Inspire Me Monday post. Hope you are keeping safe and warm during this blast of cold winter weather. Please keep our friends in Texas and the surrounding area in your prayers as they recover from the record storm that swept the state.

Let's take a look at today's project! With the cold weather, I was tempted to pull out my holiday stamps and get a head start on my end of year cards, but opted instead to take a look at some of the digital stamps appropriate for any time of the year. So today's project features the Party Essentials Digital Stamp Set, which includes three images and four celebratory sentiments.

So here's my take on the pile of packages! I intended this as a birthday card, but with a change of colors the image also work for weddings, anniversaries or even Christmas!

If I had paid more attention, I would have remembered that Gloria also recently colored this image as part of her fabulous Inspire Me Monday post a few weeks ago. Be sure that you take a look at what she did!

Want to know how I colored the image? Get comfy because I've got a coloring video for you

And here are the Copic markers that I used.

Thanks for joining me today! Full supply list for my card can be found on my blogBe sure you check out my Power Poppy coloring videos on YouTube.

Inspire Me Monday: Your Biggest Fan!

GOOD MORNING POWER POPPY FANS! I'm back today with another Inspire Me Monday blog post. It's hard to believe that it's already the last week of January and we're coming up on yet another holiday. I don't usually send out Valentine's Day cards, but I do send out friendship cards. So I wanted to make something that gave a nod to the holiday, but was versatile enough to be used at other times of the year.

So let's take a look at today's project! I decided to feature one of the images from the Va-Va-Valentines Digital Stamp set. The set includes six illustrations and four sentiments so you're bound to find something to fit the occasion.

For my project I used the "biggest fan" illustration. I colored the image with Copic markers (see list below) and kept the card design relatively simple.

Speaking of which -- I have a habit of coloring first and then looking for design paper to coordinate with my image. Why? For me, the fun is in the coloring so I always want to jump right in. But that also means that I spend a lot of time trying to coordinate paper after the fact. This time, I actually decided on the layout and the papers BEFORE coloring the image. And of course, it was much easier to pull the card together. Duh!

Inspire Me Monday: Forest Fellas featuring Bernard Bear

HAPPY HOLIDAYS POWER POPPY FRIENDS! Welcome to the last Inspire Me Monday post for the year - and what a year it has been! I'm Nancy Sheads and today I'm bringing you a project featuring the Forest Fellas Clear Polymer Stamp Set. This image is also available in the Forest Fellas: Bernard Bear Digital Stamp Set.

At this point, I'm ready to hibernate and wake up in the spring, but I don't think I can get away with that. I'm been so focused on creating holiday cards these past couple of months that I'm having a hard time switching to something else.

I flipped through my stamps and half heartedly colored some daffodils but that just wasn't doing the trick for me. I didn't want to color more Christmas stamps, but I felt out of sync coloring spring flowers, especially since it's 25 degrees outside.

Then I remembered that I had the Forest Fellas stamp set and Bernard Bear was just the thing to color. Wintery, and I could add a nod to the holiday season in the colors of his scarf.

First, let's take a look at this fun image! Bernard Bear with his overalls, fancy scarf and mug of his favorite hot beverage is sure to bring a smile to your face. He's part of a larger set of forest friends outfitted in winter garb featuring sentiments from Marcella and the entire Bloom Brigade. Bernard and his friends are also available as digital stamps in the Power Poppy shop.

Today's project features:

DIRECTIONS
  • Cut card base from from a heavy weight white cardstock to 4.25″ x 11″ and score at 5.5″ for a top fold card.
  • Cut pattern paper to 4" x 5.25"
  • Cut solid card stock to 3.25" x 4.5"
  • Cut white card stock to
  • Stamp image on Copic compatible paper using a Copic friendly ink.
  • Color image (marker colors listed below).
  • Fussy cut image. Apply foam adhesive squares to back.
  • Adhere pattern paper to card base.
  • Stamp trees and sentiment on white card stock strip as shown.
  • Adhere sentiment strip to solid cardstock and position on pattern paper as shown.
  • Adhere colored image as shown.
  • For the top border, I used a snowflake border die, but you could achieve similar results by positioning die cut snowflakes and trimming excess as needed.

In a year where hugging is problematic, sending a card with a warm bear hug is just the thing.

Twelve Days of Christmas - Day 12: Mossy Pots with Paperwhites!

Hello Friends! Welcome to the 12 Days of Christmas December Challenge and here we are at Day 12! I'm Nancy Sheads and today I'm featuring an image from the Mossy Pots with Paperwhites: Accent Pieces Digital Stamp Set. This image is also available in the Mossy Pots with Paperwhites Clear Polymer Stamp Set

First - let's take a look at this beautiful digital stamp set! I love paperwhites and so this was a natural for me to color. As Marcella says - they are so dainty, fresh, white, and bright! So how could I resist?

Today's project features:

DIRECTIONS

  • Cut card base from from a heavy weight white cardstock to 4.25″ x 11″ and score at 5.5″ for a top fold card.
  • Cut pattern paper to 3.75" x 5"
  • Cut solid card stock to 3.25" x 4.5"
  • Print digital image on paper appropriate to your coloring medium. If you need help printing a digital image see Julie's blog post HERE or my YouTube video HERE.
  • Color image. I used Copic markers and my marker list is shown below.
  • Trim image layer to 3" x 4.25"
  • Adhere image layer to center of solid card stock.
  • Apply craft foam or foam strips to back of solid card stock.
  • Adhere to center of pattern paper.
  • Adhere card front to card base.
  • Add sentiment if desired.

  • Does it look like something is missing? Yeah - I didn't add a sentiment to the front of my card. I may add one at a later date when I send the card, but as it is now, it's suitable for any occasion - holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. So by adding the sentiment later, I can tailor it to the recipient and occasion.

I previously posted a project using the other image from this set. You can take a look at it HERE.
