Skewed

I was attracted by the decoration under the eaves of this late 19th century terrace on the corner of Albion & Selwyn in Paddington. Once I stood on the diagonal, however, the lines of the house, and the lines of the utility poles seemed to have a 'star-wars' effect on my brain.

A bored Eucalypt

This is the trunk of the Eucalyptus maculata aka Corymbia maculata. We thought long and hard about this, and gave it the common name, 'Spotted Gum'.

NB ... update ... In the comments, Joan has queried whether this is really a 'Spotted Gum' as the variety she knows from the South Coast has colourations on the bark but not the dimpling. There are a number of varieties of gum (not all eucalypts) that have the common name, 'spotted gum'. The variety I show here starts the same way: as the bark peels, the trunk beneath takes a colourful, but mottled, appearance. This variety takes a more or less dimpled appearance. It could also be the scientific name Corymbia citriodora (MYRTACEA). The dimpling is not caused by a bug.

The cruel winds of August

I think of Tom Eliot as the howling winds from the Antarctic are sucked along the coast like a ginormous funnel betwixt two high pressure systems. August is a cruel month, and winter is not over until the bitter winds have sung.

A wish to build a dream on

If you can blow all the seeds from a dandelion globe with one blow, you are loved with a passion.

If a few remain, your lover has reserveations.

If many remain, you are loved very little.

Or, perhaps you just have weak lungs.

Look closer, see me

Margo helped by moving the chair up to the table. When another chair was needed, she moved that first chair up to a new spot. And another. She still had a pronounced drawl to her voice.

'Are you from North America, Margo?'
'San Francisco. Yep. America.'

There is a trending verse on FaceBook by a 'Crabby Old Man' who dies in hospital, leaving nothing but this scribble. Here is the last part of it, with adjustments to suit Margo:

What do you see people? .......... What do you see?
What are you thinking ............ when you're looking at me?
A crabby old woman ............... not very wise,
Uncertain of habit ............... with faraway eyes?

I'm just an old woman ............ and nature is cruel.
'Tis jest to make old age ........ look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles ............ grace and vigor, depart.
There is now a stone ............. where I once had a heart.

But inside this old body ......... a young girl she still dwells,
And now and again ................ her battered heart swells.
She remembers the joys ........... She remembers the pain.
And she's loving and living ...... life over again.

I think of the years ............. Too few, gone too fast.
And accept the bald fact ......... that nothing can last.
So, open your eyes, people ....... open and see.
Not a crabby old woman ........... Look closer. See ME!
