Blog Award

Kim, Terry, and Patty all gave me this very cool award, and Dianne gave it back. Thanks, ladies!!!

The rules of the award are:

1. The winner can put the logo on her blog.
2. Link the person you received your award from.
3. Nominate at least 7 other blogs.
4. Put links of those blogs on yours.
5. Leave a message on the blogs of those you’ve nominated.

I have well over 200 blogs in my Google Reader, and if I didn't like them, I wouldn't read them. (Basically, I love ALL your blogs). I also try to leave comments on occasion so people know their blogs are being read. So whenever I pass on an award, I like to highlight blogs some of the blogs that I read, but definitely not all of them. I think people are more prone to click on a link within a post rather than for me to say, "Hey, check out my side bar."

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Go check out these seven blogs:
And a BONUS site every stitcher should be familiar with, The LNS Report Card. Take a moment to check it out and add some comments about stores you've had experience with, just to keep the list updated. It's nice to have a resource for checking out potential LNS and ONS, and if you don't see one you shop at listed, be sure to contact the moderator, Genie. She's usually quick to respond and will get shops added to the list as needed.

Seven more Brilliant Blogs

Since Claire was kind enough to bestow the Brilliant award on my blog, I have another opportunity to possibly introduce you to some additional blogs you may not know about.

First off, I'd like to award two gallery type blogs that have been sources of ideas, tips, techniques and freebies for me for a while.

Managed by Carol (Garden of Stitches), these are definitely blogs worth checking out, but don't blame me if you end up spending hours and hours and hours on them! :-) Blame Carol for keeping them so nicely organized, and the amazing stitchers that contribute their work.

And now for a few more blogs I enjoy reading:

Another award, and more blogs for you to check out!

Olga, whose stitching and and finishing I greatly admire, has very kindly bestowed the Brillante Weblog award to me. If you haven't been to Olga's Blog, you absolutely must check it out! She does beautiful work, and had she not given the award to me, I would have been sorely tempted to give it to her.

The rules for this award:
1. Put the logo on your blog;
2. Add a link to the person who awarded you;
3. Nominate at least 7 other blogs;
4. Add links to those blogs on yours;
5. Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs.

And my nominees are:

Giving out awards

There's been a few awards making the rounds lately, and I've been seeing quite a few blog entries that say, "Thanks to So-and-so for giving me this award, but I am going to break the rules and not give it to anyone else because I love everyone / I can't pick just 5 / most people have already gotten it / I have a whole list in my blogroll".

Fair enough. Those are all valid reasons, not to mention you're avoiding potentially hurting someone's feeling because you didn't give them an award. But sometimes, when considering to pass on said awards, I think we focus a little too much on the negative aspects and forget about the good things. For instance, how nice did it feel to get a comment or an email from someone telling you they thought enough of you, your work, and your blog to give you an award? Really nice, right? Made your day? Made you feel appreciated? Let you know people are listening to what you say, and perhaps find you inspirational? How nice would it be to pass on that feeling to someone else?

And let's not forget the social networking aspect of blogging. LNSs are closing left and right, designers are going out of business, and it can be hard to find local stitching communities. Thankfully, we have the Internet, from which we can not only acquire stash, but inspiration, encouragement, and friendships as well. The Internet is what helps so many of us stay connected to our craft and to our fellow stitchers, and those links have to be maintained and expanded. The more links we can add to our our networks, the stronger the community becomes.

Why not put out a few new links every now and again for your readers to follow, and help them discover new blogs, new techniques, new designers, etc., for themselves? I personally have found tons of ideas and inspiration from all the blogs I read, and I feel good being able to share them with others. Yes, I know a lot of bloggers maintain a blogroll or a list of links in their sidebars, but with so many people using readers (myself included), it's likely that visits to your actual blog are rare. There may not be as many people checking out your blogroll as you think.

I don't mind picking a few blogs from the many I read and highlighting them in a post. It takes me just a few short minutes, and I feel it's a wise investment of my time if I can make one person feel good, or help someone else find a new blog they may not have been familiar with. I don't think it matters if the award has been given before, and if someone's feelings are hurt because they didn't get an award, then perhaps it should say something to them about making a bigger impression on the blogging community.

I feel so bad when people put themselves and their blogs down because they think nobody is reading them and are contemplating closing them. I feel for new bloggers when they are unsuccessful trying to break into the community and generate some traffic to their blog. It's not much fun when you put yourself and your work out there, and nobody seems to care because nobody knows how to find you, or even that you exist.

I didn't single anyone out because we're all busy with lives outside the cross stitch and online worlds, and it's not my place to tell anyone else how to handle their blog. But I do urge you, that the next time you get an award, to consider passing it on and highlighting a few of the blogs you read in a post. A little care and nurturing in the blogging community can really go a long way towards helping not only stay alive, but thrive.

Thanks, Meari! Thanks, Michele!

Sweet Meari awarded me a KreativBlogger Award, with the stipulation that I pass it on to five more bloggers who will in turn pass it onto another five (and so on and so forth....). As is usually the case, it's VERY hard to narrow it down to just five, but I'll give it a shot.

UPDATED: Lovely Michele also awarded me. Thanks, Michele!
Whenever I get one of these awards, I try to highlight different blogs, perhaps some blogs that people aren't as familiar with, as it makes me sad to see stitchers post they are considering deleting their blogs because they don't think anyone reads them. I read over 200 blogs and each and every one of them brings me some kind of inspiration, joy, happiness, etc. I try to comment whenever possible, especially if I have a more in depth comment. "Nice work!" comments are wonderful and ALWAYS appreciated, but a more detailed comment that engages the author in some way is especially nice.

If you read some wonderful blogs, take a few seconds and leave a comment for the author so they feel appreciated. Even better, put a link to their blog on yours or find some way of spreading the word. I can't tell you how many wonderful stitchers I have encountered just by following a trail from one blog to the next.

Go ahead.... Make my day!

Sorry. I couldn't resist!!! I was just looking at my Google Reader, and to my surprise and delight, the lovely Mel (Stitches with Camels) awarded me a Make My Day Award, with the instruction to pass it on to 10 more bloggers who make MY day. Well, it was hard to pick just 10 seeing as how I subscribe to so many blogs, and each and every one of them has inspired, motivated, and generally entertained me at one point or another.

One of the things I like BEST about the stitching community is even though everyone is spread out all over the world and we all come from different cultures and backgrounds, we've forged a connection through our needlework. Sometimes it spills over into our real lives, and we find ourselves with a community of generous, kind, thoughtful souls that can be tapped into at any time for a lift, a smile, advice, or inspiration. To each and every one of you, I say thank you!

But rules are rules, and I try to play by them. (Most of the time!) So these are the 10 that came immediately to mind...

  1. Kim - K: The Real Life Adventures

  2. Barbara - Mainely Stitching

  3. Cathey - Pumpkin Patch & Co.

  4. Kathryn - Threads of Desire

  5. Lee - Lake Stitcher

  6. Janet - 37 (stitches) in a Row

  7. Dianne - Dianne Rambling On...

  8. Monique - Inside Number Twenty

  9. Kim - Kim's Northwoods Discoveries

  10. Tina - Stitching in Texas

If I've tagged you, and you'd like to spread the love, feel free to pick 10 blogs YOU read to give the award to. And if I haven't tagged you and you feel like doing something nice for someone, you can tag 10 blogs of your own. Sometimes, as you're plodding along in blogland, wondering if anyone is even reading the words you write, you end up getting a little surprise like this and it really makes YOUR day. It's nice to know that people are actually reading what I write.

My first award!

I received my first blogging "award" this morning from Terri, which I thought was really sweet! Thanks, Terri!

I'm pretty new to the blogging community, so I don't really know who has and hasn't gotten one of these. I'm going to pick a few blogs that I like to read that inspired me to start doing my own.

  1. My friend, Michelle, aka Fickleknitter, who started all of this.
  2. Another friend, Ashley
  3. Jenn, one of the first cross stitching blogs I started reading
  4. Meari, who sent me one of my first welcomes to the blogging community
  5. Von, another early welcomer
  6. Anita, who helped me get better adjusted to blogging
  7. Lauren, for providing some excellent links to tutorials
  8. Susimac, for doing detailed, photographic tutorials
  9. Abi, for providing much inspiration in her beautiful pieces
  10. Carol, also for inspiration
