Romanian Point lace

I have started a group on flickr for those who make Romanian point lace. If you don't know what this is, there are a few posts I have done about it. I am hoping this group will be able to pull together lots of different cord patterns and show off filling stitches and the like. I know in the title of the group is the word crochet, that was because the cord is crocheted. This isn't really a crochet group but a point lace group, ie. needle lace.

All these things are free patterns that we as a group have shared for personal use, not profit. The person is only selling them for 99 cents but, the point is, they don't have a right to sell them at any price!

We won eBay pulled the item that had my photo and two friends of mine photos. Wasn't right someone selling links to things we had worked hard on to make available for non-profit them someone trys to be sly . Just goes to show if enough people speak up you can win.

Flickr issues

Because most of my photos are hosted on flickr I am at their mercy. If you haven't noticed, the last few days my blog takes forever to load. It is because flickr is having issues with image hosting. So some photos just are not loading, which causes the site to never finish loading and to keep trying. Sorry for any inconvenience this causes any one. Between that and the background being white, not my first choice, my site is even hard for me to look at right now.

English Paper Piecing Question

This picture was posted in The English paper piecing group on flickr. A discussion arose about how to baste large hex pieces. My tutorial explained it, but visuals are better. I do have permission to show this example of how not to do it by its maker, Anne Brumley. Pictured are her first blocks; I actually think they are well made. I do not see the stitching between the blocks, her fabric choices are vibrant and lively. I just want it clear that these are well-made blocks, and the only thing I wanted to clarify was all the basting threads. All the threads you see have to be removed; there are also lots of them, which makes that time consuming and your fingers will hurt from going through the papers so much with the needle.

In the way I do it, all you have to do is cut six small threads; just six small nips of the scissors, then pull the papers out (which saves time) and just leave in the basteing threads.

So, you do a back stitch in each corner where the fabric folds over on top of itself. Then, in the middle of each side of the hex you do an ever so tiny stitch that goes through the fabric and the paper. I have made a few things with this technique, so I promise it is simple and not hard.

Go all the way around in this manner; cut thread when you get back to the beginning. I hope this helps whomever does bigger pieces in English paper piecing. Below are other examples of Anne's work; she uses silk in some of her work, and it is lovely. She picks very nice fabrics and has good hand piecing skills; she is a very nice hand seamstress.

I know Christmas is over but....

I still want to have fun with it and listen to holiday music. I have never made an ornament wreath before. I have been collecting ornaments for two years to make a real cool one I hope it will be cool, anyway. I decided I had to put all the ornaments on my tree first, so that is what I did this year. Next year I hope to make a wreath, or two, or more. To get me inspired, I started this group on flickr. Feel free to check them out or join, if you so desire, and if you know of any tutorials, I am looking for some so I can have a good idea of what to do before I make it.

November BOM

Sorry for all the bad photos in this post. My husband has requested that I try to keep my projects in the studio/sewing room/kids' art room and not all over the house. Well, honestly, that room has the worse light in the entire house. I will have to figure out some way of taking better photos in that room. I love the light in my family room, but oh, well. Maybe I should just drag the photos down after every stitch; oh let's not kid ourselves, I am patient when it comes to making things but spending four to ten minuets per photo -- just not happening. Especially going up and down the stairs since my knee is still hurting and I'm still wearing the knee brace on and off when the pain is too much to stand. Anyway, on to this month's BOM. It is sort of a cross between snail's trail/court house steps/ and log cabin. I honestly don't know the name of this block, so if anyone in blog land does, please let me know.

Supplies:
3 fabrics cut in 1 1/2 inch wide stripes
sewing machine and sewing supplies ie: scissors, rotary cutter, mat....
clear quilter's ruler for truing up

Go to it!

First two pieces are 1 1/2 inches square. From there, it is follow picture and sew and cut till done. This is a more follow-the-picture type of thing and true up as needed. Be careful, there shouldn't be a need for truing up and you have no tolerance for it either. I like to use a scant 1/4 inch seam; that gives me just a little fudge room. Just so we know, the block is square: a nice 10 1/2 by 10 1/2, but I didn't take the photos from dead-on; the lighting issue and kids-under-feet issue. First block is just the three fabrics cut in 1 1/2 inch wide strips; the rest are sewing order.
Side note: the last two photos are of the same finished block (oops), and they are rotated wrong, too. This is what I get for doing this when I am sleepy, too.

update:
I figured out why I have two of the same block at the bottom of this between picture 1 and 2 on row three. There should have been two more photos; I haven't a clue where they went, the photos that is. But I think everyone can still follow well enough to make the block and life goes on. You see those two last blocks were supposed to be in the construction layout just at the top or bottom of this post. Sorry folks!
