Weathered Grey Nightstands Before & After

We love it when great pieces like these
just turn up at the studio...
we have a fabulous network
and they know EXACTLY what I love

I know, right?
GORGEOUS!

Made by my favorite manufacturer
White Fine Furniture Co

(sorry, no pics yet of the finished dresser...it is HUGE
and quite heavy)

Lately, I've been really loving the idea of making pieces
look old and weathered without actually distressing them
and I can't get enough of white and grey

Cage-front nightstands have gotten harder and harder to find!

Instead of our usual fancy finish with gold leaf, etc
we kept these pretty simple
with Snow White from General Finishes

On top of the Snow White, Black glaze, watered down
and heavily wiped back

In insides are fresh and clean with Snow White paint
and several coats of General Finishes Satin topcoat

The hardware is a custom mixed color using One Step Paint
sealed with Satin topcoat from GF

The coordinating dresser wears the same finish
and turned out lovely

I can visualize this set in an all white bedroom
with touches of grey linen on the bed...
gorgeous!

You can find these pieces,
as well as the matching dresser
exclusively at

A Few of Our Favorite Things

No, I did NOT get a "before"
I know...I'm really terrible about that

close your eyes and visualize very light golden pine...
yep, you've got it.
Not pretty.

Nothing, of course, that a little paint won't fix!

I call this my FAVORITE THINGS dresser
because I used some of my favorite products to complete it

I've really come to embrace these dramatic triple mirrors...
they really make a huge statement!
(also, that little sign sums up my life...
it's not perfect, but my hair sure is!)

This is a much better representation of the true color
I used Luxe Grey from Amy Howard at Home's One Step Paint line for the base
(and on the hardware)

The hardware simply received two coats of OSP, wax, and Dust of Ages
Our wax of choice is Carnauba Wax from Real Milk Paint Co

I wanted the body of the dresser to be a bit more dramatic
(not as soft as the hardware)
so I used a custom blend of General Finishes Glazes

I'm crazy about how the glaze settled into the oak, highlighting the grain and the wear marks
(I know they are fabricated to mimic age, but who cares...they looks amazing!)

Here's a run-down of a few of my FAVORITE THINGS:

What are your favorite, "go to" products?

Fancy Flea and Fried Chicken

My friend Jenni and I hit the road on Friday
for Plant City...Home of Fancy Flea
(and lucky us...also home of Maryland Fried Chicken)

I've avoided going to Fancy Flea the last few years
because it gets SO crowded...
I mean crowded like you can barely walk down the road
much less actually SEE anything

Because Fancy Flea was a two day event this time,
and day one happened to be Halloween
I figured it wouldn't be too insane

Thankfully, it was not.

The weather was gorgeous, the crowds were manageable,
and much to my relief, it was NOT a sea of painted furniture
as it has been in the past

There was a lovely assortment of items for sale

See for yourself:

This table made it into the van!

Along with a few dozen of these sweet birdies on salvaged posts

And this clock MIGHT be hanging on my dining room wall  right this very second!

Flatware wind-chimes....

How funky is THIS?  Imagine the salon this dryer chair came out of...!

Yeah...this is pretty much where I stopped, dropped, and swooned!

Overall, we had a wonderful day
Shopping, chatting with friends, sipping lemonade,
(there may have been some cupcakes involved)
eyeballing all the eye candy,
all topped off with fried chicken

ain't NOTHING wrong with a day like that!

Get in Gear

I've officially run out of my current color OBSESSION
(Tick Tock from Amy Howard at Home)

so I cracked open another recently released color that is also
GORGEOUS!

GET IN GEAR...

We primed this solid wood cabinet in white before applying Get in Gear
then distressed with a medium grit sanding sponge
to reveal both the white and the dark stained wood
(I've found if you distress One Step Paint right after it's dry, it distressed fairly easily)

The color is rich, vibrant, and saturated...
I love how the Mercury Glass hardware  glistens against the blue-green shade

I opted to keep the interior very simple
in fresh, clean white
(the doors had decorative wood inserts, but I loved the more modern look
of the plain glass doors)

This is a wonderful statement piece, don't you think?
I imagine this piece in a neutral dining room
(perhaps mostly white?)
with some natural wood elements

Haven't tried Get in Gear yet?
Go for it!

a Buffet and a Box

I've been chasing down a buffet to paint for a few months now...
as usual, one turned up right down the street
(the best stuff always turns up close to home!)

Great bones, GORGEOUS wood on the drawers ad doors...
The top?  Not so much.

I used AHaH One Step Paint in Luxe Grey
with clear wax and Dust of Ages
Not a bit of distressing, yet it still looks wonderfully aged
Dust of Ages adds SO MUCH character and patina

I restored the drawers and doors
(I decoupaged inside the top drawer with antique sheet music
but forgot to get a pic!)

The original hardware wears a distressed gold leaf finish

No, it was NOT fun painting that trim on the doors...
If I never have to do that again, it will be just fine with me!

I had the supplies out to decoupage,
so I decided to do a little experiment on a plain wood box

This was a fun project, and SO EASY!

I mixed 50% Elmers glue with 50% water
and applied to the box
then smoothed on the sheet music I had already cut to size
I then brushed the glue mixture over the top to seal and let it all dry
(about 30 minutes)

Next, the fun part...
I sanded the heck out of with a medium grit sanding block,
followed by clear wax mixed with Dust of Ages to create a weathered wax

the finish looks old and worn but feels like silk...
I forsee this treatment on something larger in the future!

Whitewashed Grey Dresser

I was down with Strep Throat for almost TWO WEEKS...
I'm not sure what was worse...the Strep or not painting!
(OK, Strep was the hands down worst of the two...)

I was incredibly eager to get back to work

This dresser had been awaiting paint for several weeks
and I'm quite pleased with the outcome

The wood was pretty enough, but sort of orange and quite dated
I debated on going very fancy with colored panels and gold leaf details
but I've been craving softness and gentle distressing lately

For this soft, romantic finish I mixed
AHaH's Luxe Grey One Step Paint (OSP)
 with Black OSP
(3/1 ratio)
Then I glazed the paint using White Glaze from General Finishes
The white slightly lightened the grey,
settling into the recesses and brush strokes

You could use a glaze, like I did, or a white wax,
or even a watered down white wash
all would give you a similar look
I like to use what I have on hand, and I had glaze

I lightly distressed the edges while the glaze was still a bit damp
then sealed the entire piece with clear wax once dry

The hardware was painted Ballet White OSP
then waxed and finished with Dust of Ages for a lovely patina

Wouldn't this piece make a wonderful bathroom vanity?
