Holidays ahoy!

Well, I've had a couple of requests to update my blog... which never happens.... so i must be getting behind :P Kinda embarrassing that I haven't written anything for a whole month!!

First a little Thanksgiving recap. We had a blast enjoying some fun activities with both our families. On Wednesday night Steve and I attended "Pie School" with Chris Clark (Steve's mom) and the Clark sister's. Steve's mom is known for her pie crusts and delectable fillings, so learning from the master was definitely a privilege! While we may not be quite masters ourselves, we are definitely on our way to being able to hold our own in the pie making sphere :P Thanks momma Clark! By the way, these are not our pies... ours looked (and definitely tasted) better!

Thanksgiving day we played it pretty easy in the morning (well, Steve played it easy in the morning... I missed morning enjoying an extra bit of sleep!), and then hit up both my grandparent's grand Thanksgiving feast and Steve's family's pie party to enjoy our creations. We are so blessed to live close to both our families! These sweet potatoes are here to signify all that is wonderful about Thanksgiving.... mmmmm.... sweet potatoes with marshmallows!!!

Another fun part of Thanksgiving for Steve and I was sharing some fun news with our families... we're going to be parents! Introducing...... Bluebie Clark (thanks to Kimmy Poo for a preliminary name for our little tiny)

We are absolutely stoked about our new journey in life together... raising a human! LOL :) Our Estimated Date of Confinement (or "due date" in layman's terms... for all you normal people who are not labor and delivery nurses...) is July 4th, 2009. I'm really hoping I don't deliver on the 4th, to be honest though.... it is one of my favorite holidays and I would be so sad to miss yummy barbeque's for hospital food... ask me in a few months though and maybe that will all change :P This lovely picture is courtesy of yours truly playing around with the ultrasound machine on the labor and delivery unit on one very quiet evening... and I think it's pretty amazing for my first try :) Can you see the cute little legs on the left side?

Anyway, that's pretty much it for us and November... and holy cow can you believe it's December already?!? I really can't... there hasn't been nearly enough Christmas time snow! :( Steve has been working super hard to finish papers for all his classes- which all end on Thursday! Yea! Of course then there are finals... but the end is deliciously in sight! I'm so proud of my studious man and the hard work he does both in his job and in his education! He's a tough one!

I'll try to be better about posting... but now that I have the pregnancy card to play... I might be too lazy sometimes :P We'll see ;)

A late October post :)

Quiet night on labor and delivery is giving me a little extra time to catch up on my blogging :) I thought I'd throw a brief post out about our Halloween (even though it was pretty low key :P). It's an incredibly brief post- because I worked Halloween night(and by extension slept the whole day of as well) and Steve doesn't like Halloween! A big part of our celebration was actually held earlier in the month when we went up to SLC and carved pumpkins with Kurt and Nicole! They were pretty dang intense and cool, if I do say so myself :) Steve made a papijump face (a game on the iPhone that is ridiculously addicting though simple), and I tried to carve a fetal profile (because I work in labor and delivery :P and I couldn't come up with anything more fun). Kurt and Nicole both carved some very Halloweeny faces and I was impressed with their skills.

Kinda a funny little story, on Halloween night, I went and got some little cat ears so i could kinda dress up for work. I put them on right before i went to work, and our cat-Kutching- was totally freaked out. His tail got all puffy and was standing straight up, and he kept following me around and just staring at my head. It took my a second to figure out what his problem was, but after i did Steve and i both had a good laugh :P Oh the joys of pets :)

Steve got to spend the evening with the Davies' at a Halloween gig, which he enjoyed despite people wearing costumes around the food (it really grosses him out-if there is face paint or anything smelly around food he can't eat it!).

So that's pretty much our Halloween. Pretty boring, but hey, we're just a married couple, no kiddos to entertain and get hopped up on candy quite yet :P I'm sure we'll enjoy our years of that later on!

*Stay tuned for pictures :P I'll post them when I get home and get some sleep!*

What have Steve and Laura been up to?!

Well, we've kinda fallen off the edge of the blogging world this last little while. We haven't really been doing much out of the ordinary, which gives me little to blog about. However, we're still having quite a bit of fun with our sometimes mundane school and work lives :)

We celebrated my birthday at the beginning of October, the big 24! :) It was actually an awesome day- of which i have almost no pictures :( My wonderful parents took me, Steve, and my cute sister Aubrey out for lunch at Olive Garden. It was wonderfully yummy :) I was surprised with a package from paradise- aka Hawaii- from Kimmy, along with some other very sweet gifts from my hubby and parents. Steve gave me an awesome gift certificate- shown below- which he has actually fulfilled very well the whole month so far! I'm a lucky girl!

That night I was scheduled to work, but only if the unit was pretty busy. As luck would have it, I was called in, but only for about 15 minutes :P When I got to the hospital, the unit (which was an absolute madhouse at 5 PM), had calmed down significantly, and they let me go home! Steve and I spent the evening at his mission reunion. It was pretty darn fun :)

Another fun thing we've been able to enjoy this Fall has been BYU football games! This is the last year we get to take advantage of all-sports passes with Steve graduating in December, and the games have been pretty fun. We originally had planned on getting tickets close to our friends the Davies', but because of a stupid new ticketing system, our seats were separated :( Don't worry though, we've fought against the Man, and are sitting by the Davies anyway :P

Steve and I were also pleasured with another visit from Scott and Laura Bowles! We have missed them so much since they moved to Arizona, so we really treasured this time with them! We enjoyed some Thai food on Friday night at a new Thai restaurant we heard was yummy- Thai Evergreen. It was actually really yummy, and we definitely recommend it :) We met up with some more friends, Karie and Tyler, for ice cream at Sub Zero which is consequently where Steve and I went on our first date :) We also hung out on Saturday. We went up the Provo canyon and enjoyed all the beautiful fall leaves and ate Pizza, and then joined Kurt and Nicole Madsen for a movie extravaganza! We had a ton of fun, and want to thank everyone who helped us have a fun weekend!
As a random side note, I am really loving these swiffer commercials :P They make me smile.... enjoy!

Yes on 8! :)

Some friends of ours posted this on their blog and encouraged everyone to do the same. Please cut/paste this on your blog and/or email it to friends and family. We can make a difference on this critical issue. Vote YES on Prop 8!

Failure to pass Proposition 8 will hurt children.
If gay marriage remains legal, public schools will put it on equal footing with traditional marriage. Children will likely receive “age appropriate” information about sexual relations within heterosexual and homosexual marriages.

Failure to pass Proposition 8 will hurt churches.
The court’s decision will inevitably lead to conflicts with religious liberty and free speech rights. Society will become more and more hostile to traditional beliefs about marriage and family. Over time, greater acceptance of nontraditional marriage will be demanded of all people. This could impact the ability of any religion to teach and practice its beliefs. Including adoption agencies.

A YES vote will not hurt gays.
In California, the law provides for marriage-related benefits to be given to civil unions and domestic partnerships. Proposition 8 does not diminish these benefits. For your information:On Friday, October 10th, 2008 a first-grade class took a field trip to witness a lesbian wedding in California. Click Here for the article from the San Francisco Chronicle.

A father in Massachusetts was frustrated when his twin kindergartners were taught about homosexuality at school by the teachers. He insisted he be notified in the future before such things were discussed so he could pull his boys out of school. He was taken to jail. Click Here for the story.

A Catholic adoption agency In the UK closed their doors because of the Government's new homosexual equality laws. The Equality Act forbids discrimination in the provision of goods and services on the basis of sexual orientation. The law was forced through Parliament last year despite past Prime Minister Tony Blair's recommendation that Catholic adoption agencies be exempted from the rules. Click Here for more info.

Earlier this month judges in Conneticut overturned the state law (just as the judges in California did) to legalized gay marriage. This is not just an issue in California. We voted years ago to keep traditional marriage as the only marriage recognized in the state of California, 4 judges overturned our vote…and we need to fight back. That is what this Proposition is about. This is happening everywhere and the leaders of the church and others have warned that the outcome of California’s vote will affect the way the other states vote. So PLEASE…even if you don’t live in California, put this on your blog or email this on. The internet knows no state line. You know contacts in California that I don’t…and so do your friends. Please pass this on as it could eventually have an effect on everyone!

"Occasionally discouragement may darken our pathway; frustration may be a constant companion. In our ears there may sound the sophistry of Satan as he whispers, "You cannot save the world; your small efforts are meaningless. You haven't time to be concerned for others." Trusting in the Lord, let us turn our heads from such falsehoods and make certain our feet are firmly planted in the path of service and our hearts and souls dedicated to follow the example of the Lord." --Thomas S. Monson

October 27th: Last day to apply for “Vote by Mail” Click Here for info.

November 4th: Election day. Polls close at 8:00pm. Vote by mail must be received by this time and can be hand delivered if necessary.

YOU'VE BEEN TAGGED...Here's what you do: In the broadcast we were asked to "go viral on our blogs, etc" by Elder Ballard. This is my way of going viral. If you feel this is an important issue I ask that you copy and paste this post...and post it on your blog. PLEASE keep it at the top of your blog through November 4th. which you can adjust each time you post under the "edit post" option. The internet knows NO STATE LINE. You know contacts in California that I do not...as do your friends and their friends...and so on. Please do this. If not for your own children and the effect it could have on them some day...for mine! After you have posted this...email this to your contacts and TAG all your blogging buddies to do the same. THANK YOU!

Getting Away From it All!

For the very last weekend in September, Steve and I took off to the mountains for a last minute campout! I worked almost every weekend either Friday or Saturday this whole Summer, so getting out to camp has been almost impossible till now. However, I have recently been hired exclusively at American Fork Hospital (where I was working at three different hospitals up until the change), and have a very nice set schedule which is more condusive to getting away. Steve gets out of class at 4:30, so he took off and found us a nice campsite in Hope campground (up by Squaw Peak in Provo canyon). After I got off work at 6:30, I got groceries and made my way up to join him.
We had such a great time! We made tin foil dinners and peach dump cake (Steve's favorite!) for dinner and pancakes and bacon (again, Steve's favorite :p) for breakfast! The weather was perfect and it was so nice to be so far away from the rush of everyday life for just a night :) We're already planning more fun escapes next Summer!

Ode to some women in my life that I love

So the other day I was making fried rice (again) from my awesome sister-in-law's recipe (both the sister-in-law and the recipe are awesome :) ), and i started thinking about how I have some amazing women in my life. I really am a pretty lucky gal. Anyway, I just wanted to do a quick post about a few of these women, and why they are so special to me.

I know, random picture :) But my mom definitely gets to be at the top of this list. She is truly one of my best friends, and I love hanging out with her and chatting about all of life's going on's :) She listens to my gripes and celebrates with me when something awesome happens. This picture is from the Taste of Home cooking school that we went to last week. It was fun, and even more fun cause I went with her!

I also have some amazing sisters :D Kimmy and I got to live together for one year before I was swept off by my knight in shining armor, and we had too much fun! She is an amazing girl, and I'm missing crazy Kimmy time now that she's in Hawaii. Aubs is awesome too :) Growing up I always heard from teachers and other leaders that worked with both of us that we look so much alike. I'm pretty lucky to look like such a beautiful girl! Aubs is off on her first year of college now and it's been so fun to see her make her way into the world. It would have been fun to have her as a roommate too, but I guess the eternal mate thing really couldn't have waited :P Sorry Aubs :P

I was lucky enough to marry into a family of amazing women as well! Chris Clark, my other mom, is such a fantastic person. She is incredibly intelligent, talented and a great mom. I've learned so much from her already, and am glad that I'm going to be part of her forever family. Marrying into Steve's family also gave me the new opportunity of being a younger sibling. I now have two older sister's (in law) and they are both such an example to me. Emily and Jenny are both amazing mothers and chefs (which I have definitely profited from- both in eating their cooking and learning their recipes). By the way Emily, i need more pictures of you... this is all i had on my computer! Lame me! It's also been fun to have two new younger sisters in Becca and Kristen. They are both such fun girls and I'm so excited to see where they go in their lives :)
So I really could go on for a much longer time, but Steve is about to come home, and the man will be ready to eat when he gets here- so I'll just suffice to say once again that I am very blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful women in my life! It makes a difference to have that connection with other women- and I've realized recently that it is so needed for my mental health :P There is nothing like an amazing girlfriend to help out in some situations!

Anniversary Extravaganza!

So for our anniversary, my wonderful hubby and I were able to take off on a mid-week escape. Due the the fact that I am a huge ole corporate employee (go IHC!), we got an amazing deal at the Anniversary Inn up in SLC. We got their most expensive room for half price (less than their least expensive room)! Definitely something we wanted to take advantage of... that, and we just love B&B's! It was a nice little place, and the breakfast wasn't half bad... although we've had better :) All part of the experience though huh! It was a fantastic night, and we're stoked to spend the rest of our lives (and longer!) with each other!
Why Steve wanted to go to the Roof (the Creme Brulee- although he still admits mine is superior! ;) Why I wanted to go to the Roof- the variety!
Our cute litte breakfast nook connected to our sweet room, very romantic place to have breakfast!

Hodgepodge!

Well, gotta catch up a little :) Summer has been great! We've had some fun times over the last few weeks with Steve being out of school for a few weeks!

One big event we were able to attend is one that we've been looking forward to for months- the Brian Regan comedy show! We love, love, love his comedy- he's so clean and still very funny. We went to the show with Kimmy and also Jess And Eric Davies. He definitely lived up to our expectations.

Now if you'll reach into the depths of your memory (or scroll down one or two posts) you may remember a post Steve wrote about our painting experience. We got our cups back from Color me Mine, and they pretty much look awesome :) Just thought I'd share a view of the finished product.

We also got to spend a wonderful week up in Park City at the Clark's annual time share getaway :) It was beautiful and so nice to have a few consecutive days off of work for both of us before life gets a little crazy with Fall semester. I really didn't take too many pictures.... I was busy relaxing :) Thanks Mom and Dad for a wonderful getaway!

Last but not least, my garden has actually started producing!! It's kinda funny, cause my tomatoes have been the biggest dissapointment, when I thought they were going to rock :( But the good news is that my banana peppers are growing so well, and I have some little watermelons too! I don't know where I'm going to fit full size watermelons on my little balcony :P Oh well.... we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!

Well, I don't have much to report right now, but I did want to share an awesome video that my aunt emailed me. If you haven't seen it and have some time, check it out!

An Analysis of Art

A couple of days ago, Laura and I went on a date to Color Me Mine, after getting some dinner from Tepanyaki (as a side note, our chef was from Indonesia, and I got to talk to him in Bahasa Indon!). When we arrived, we both picked out some cool looking curvy cups deals, and got to work in painting them. Well, at least did- after thinking about a general idea of what I wanted to do for about a minute, I dived right in and started to paint the outside of the cup in a light-blue color, using wide brush strokes with a large brush to get the job done as efficiently as I could manage. While I had no particular pattern in mind, I knew that I wanted the outside to be blue with brown stuff painted on it, and the inside to be brown with blue stuff painted on it. So, after painting the outside blue, I proceeded to paint the handle brown, and though I did as good of a job as I could to not touch the brown paintbrush to the blue parts I had just colored, I failed miserably in a few instances (as you can see from the pictures that Laura will post- and for those that know me, you know that I am not by nature an artisticly minded person). With that done, I proceeded to paint the inside of the cup a deep brown color, again with the wide brush and wide strokes. I was actually having a lot of fun! After that, I grabbed a thin brush and started to paint whatever came to mind on the outside of the cup. At first I painted a large brown circle in the middle of the cup, then a large X on the side, then another thin curvey X next to the circle, and so on- at the end, I had a very asymmetric pattern that looked like something a 2 year old could have easily produced- but it was mine! And so I did something similar on the inside- a large, think line, a squigley line, some dots, and the typcial S + L on different sides. I looked at Laura and proudly showed her my creation, suspecting that she would be roughly along the lines of completeness as I was.

But it was not to be so. She, being the amazing and meticulous person that she is, was just getting finised taping off sections of the cup that she wanted to remain without color, to maintain a striped pattern all around the cup. The then proceeded to paint each non-taped off section a different color with a thin brush, using short, precise strokes so as not to get the wrong color in any one section. Watching her was really interesting- she looked as though she was trying to solve a complex mathematical equation, with her cute brow furrowed and her eyes straining to see every possible detail, and her hands carefully moving each brush stroke, so as not to make any mistakes. After she was done with this task, she removed the striping tape and set it aside, now to paint the handle. In much the same way, she taped off the cup section around the handle, to avoid my mistakes of splattering the cup with handle-paint. She added a very cutely painted date stamp to the handle to commemorate the occasion, and then proceeded to decorate the larger stripes on the side with patterns in the opposite color, to beautify that part of the cup, again using the tape to make sure her design was at or near perfect. On the inside, she carefully decided what she wanted to do, and then did it with precision, adding in colors and patterns and words carefully and deliberately. After about another hour after I was done, she declared that she was also done, and that it was time to leave.
As you can see, in the post I have described ad naseum what could easily have been seen in a minutes analysis of the cups themselves- Laura is a careful, wonderful perfectionist (and I use that term with a positive connotation- I wish I was more like that), making sure that each move she makes is calculated to help her achieve her over-arching goal, which she always has. She judges herself not so much on the standards that the world sets for her as her own sense that she knows that if she can do something well, she should do it as good as she possibly can, otherwise it's of no value. I, on the other hand, am almost the exact opposite- I am quite content to have a very basic idea of what I am going to try to accomplish (in this case, paint a cup), and then moving towards that goal as best as I see fit in the moment. If something else looks more fun then what I am currently doing, I will do that ("hmmm... I think I want to paint a circle... No! How about an X!"). Though I care about what I am doing, I am more concerned with getting it done quickly then I am with getting it done exactly right. And I am perfectly comfortable with the fact that I am not good at some things, and quite possibly never will be- therefore, I do not hold myself to any standard at all in determining whether or not I have completed a task in a satisfactory manner. Now, before my wife makes me sleep on the couch, I must say this- I envy her amazing talents and her remarkable ability to focus and perfect what she is making or doing. I have never known someone so able to focus on a big picture goal and do the little things along the way to make her goal a reality. Long ago, she said to herself "I want to get into nursing school at BYU." So, she accomplished everything she needed to along the way, including getting a 4.0 in college and all the other requirements needed for that. And though I am easily distracted if something more "fun" comes along, that does not mean I am going to leave my wife :-)! Mostly because there is no one I can imagine that is more fun then her! Anyway, if you are to this point, thank you for reading the wall of text that is my psycological analysis of the artwork that Laura and I produced. Thank you for reading!

P.S. And rememeber to check out www.randomravingramblings.blogspot.com if you are interested to hear my take on life outside of me and Laura. Thanks for reading!

The Plants!!!

Now I know that you've all been waiting and anticipating the posting of how my mini garden is going!!! LOL, ok, maybe not. But I'm pretty excited about it so they are going to be posted on my blog whether you all are waiting or not! Ha ha ha! That's the power of blogging!! :D Anyway, here ya go- check out my hard work!

These are the crowning jewel of my "garden"- my tomatoes!!! If you look close you can even see little flowers getting ready to appear!

Madrigals Reunion

Last Saturday Steve and I got to go party it up with some of Steve's old high school choir comrades. It was a very fun night, and I enjoyed getting to know the people who knew him back when he was cool... j/k Steve- you're still cool! Anyway, a big shout out thanks to Betty for planning the get together. We'll be repeat customers if you do it again!

Two Cali Girls I Love :)

After the fam vacation, due to plan changes, I ended up having a full day in California to kill. I was incredibly lucky to get to spend my day with two amazing grilfriends, Ashley Hardy and Jonelle Morris (and fam!). From Long Beach I drove a rental car down the coast to Carlsbad where I was able to have lunch with Ashley and be introduced to a fabulous little restaurant called Rubio's (which they totally have here in Utah too! Sweet!). Ashley and I are old EFY co-counselors- we shared our very first week as counselors together, and even after two years of counseling, i still think back on that week as one of my very favorite! :) Thanks for lunch Ashley! Remember- the sooner you make your way down to Utah- the sooner I share my Cafe Rio with you! :)
Then

Now

After lunch I made my way up north to Ventura, CA to see Spenny and Jonelle Morris and their cute baby boy! The traffic was pretty much the worst thing I've ever had to drive in (going through LA on Friday at five....). I learned two important lessons from the drive- however. #1- I'm a pretty tough chic, even after being married for two years. I can still bust out into my independent Laura mode if need be :) LOL. And #2 don't tick off the drivers around you if you're driving in traffic like that- they will be next to, behind or in front of you for the next 2-3 hours and that could be incredibly awkward... (I never actually had this happen, just realized that it could be a hazardous situation! :)

When i finally got to Ventura, I found that the drive was well worth the time! Jonelle and Spenny and Logan took such great care of me. We all were able to go and see the beach and the boat harbor, which is super close to the Morris' home. I'm so jealous of the beautiful area they get to live in, and I guess I'm starting to understand why it costs so much to live in Cali. After the sightseeing, we all headed back and enjoyed Nellie's wonderful home cooking. It's my goal to be able to cook as well as Jonelle... maybe one day... :) The rest of the night was nice and relaxed and we enjoyed talking and playing board games! Thanks so much for the wonderful evening guys! It sure was a blast!!
