I love coconut... I love dates... unfortunately this ice cream doesn't have a strong taste of either of these ingredients :( It was super easy to make. Boil the dates in some water, add that to a can of coconut milk, a dash of vanilla, blend it, cool it, then run it through an ice cream machine... but in the end I couldn't really taste the coconut flavor... maybe next time I'll add in some sweetened coconut flakes... I'll let you know how it goes :)

Have you made ice cream at home? Got a go to recipe you'd like to share with me? What's the weirdest flavor you've ever tried?

Simply because it's January doesn't mean you shouldn't go out and enjoy a nice cone full of home made ice cream! Cold weather aside, for this months 24x24 sponsored by Foodbuzz, I proposed a cone crawl of sorts tasting all of the wonderful unique flavors Rochester had to offer during the winter months. I planned it out looking up flavors on websites, noting which creameries were closed for the season. It was all ready to go... until I started calling places... and found out that most hadn't updated their websites to say they were closed. *insert wrench into original plans*
moonlight
Even though a few were still open, I decided to change my plans slightly when I stumbled upon a unique feature of a creamery I already knew and loved. Moonlight Creamery offers tasting parties! Most people go for a full dessert tasting but I asked if it was possible to stick strictly to ice cream. Heidi, the owner, and amazing host, said it wouldn't be a problem and set us up for a fabulous mid afternoon party. (scheduled perfectly around nap times)
kidstable
The kids were set up with old school ice cream hats to color on, and plenty of ice cream themed coloring book pages. The kids got full run on the shop to pick whatever sundae they wanted... although not one wanted one. Simple scoops of cake batter, chocolate, and strawberry were the winners for this group.
anticipation
The adults were in for a marathon of eating, but first a little education. Heidi told us all about how they make the ice cream, using as many local ingredients as possible. They use cream from cows that are rbst-free, and are from upstate NY. Things like the coffee and espresso used in their flavors come from Joe Bean, another favorite place of mine here in Rochester. The other interesting thing to note is their ice cream is considered premium premium, that means it contains 14% milk fat (yeah low fat eating John wasn't so excited when he heard that part, but lets face the facts, he loved every minute of it!) She also told us about the % of air that goes into their ice cream and how that effects the texture and creaminess of it. Some companies pump in more air so they can get more bang for their buck, as much as 50% of it is air. At Moonlight, only 20% is air, making for a super creamy decadent treat. You can tell Heidi loves what she does and truthfully cares about the quality of ingredients, and the impact things will have on the environment. (All cups, spoons, and even drink cups are made to be 100% biodegradable.)

The 13 adults were in for 3 flights of ice cream. We were taught to sample them like you do wine, noting the appearance, aroma, texture, inclusions, and finish. We were even given sheets to fill out as we experienced each flavor. Not being told what the flavors were, we had to use our senses to figure it out! I found out mine weren't very good at picking up on some of the more subtle flavors... but I was spot on with others! One participant was able to guess the exact brand of booze used in one variety... nice work :)
adulttable
Flight one... ummm yeah, sorry too busy experiencing the ice cream that I forgot to take a shot! HA! We had three flavors, Butterbeer (any Harry Potter fans out there?), Smore, and Chocolate Almond. Of these three, smore was my favorite. (see that spoon below... it's made from potato! don't worry it doesn't melt and taste like potato in your ice cream)
flight1
Flight two brought four flavors, Pumpkin gingersnap (DELICIOUS), Mango raspberry, Brown sugar oatmeal (one of my favorites), and bananas foster (wasn't digging this one, but others loved it)
flight2
Flight three contained John's favorite, Espresso heath bar, the other two were Baileys, and another unique flavor, and namesake and inspiration for this 24x24 proposal, Sea Kraken! (salted caramel with nuts)
flight3
At this point you're probably thinking, wow I'd sure be full... well it's not time to stop yet. It was time to wake up with an affogato, AKA a small scoop of Madagascar vanilla ice cream drowned in a shot of espresso... simply put TO DIE FOR. My favorite thing from the whole day. What an experience, the warm strong taste of the espresso bathing over the cool calming vanilla. LOVE.
afagatto
What's that? You're full? Sorry, we're not done yet. To end the night everyone got to pick out a sundae with whatever flavors and toppings they wanted. True, this is a little out of line with my normal everything in moderation mantra... but sometimes, you just have to let loose and enjoy a special treat :)

What flavor would you have liked the best? Have you ever had an affogato? Would you try one?

Thanks again Foodbuzz for making this possible and sponsoring this event!!

"I gotta make some changes. I'm not a woman. I'm a child. What kind of life is this?"
- Elaine Benes, Seinfeld, 1995

My thoughts mirrored Elaine's (substitute 'man' for 'woman' please) as I scooped mint chocolate chip ice cream into the middle of a split choc chip cupcake (recipe found here) in order to make a pseudo-ice cream sandwich. Are you kidding me? Doesn't this amount to playing with my food?! What's next, I'm gonna borrow an Easy Bake Oven?! Compounding my confliction was the fact that exactly one night previous, Steph and I both had already partaken in this same activity. But now, alone, deep in the shadows and still of the night, I found myself carving out delicate blades of minty green, gently layering onto cushions of chocolately goodness. Alas, in a matter of seconds, all that remained (after my final bit of self respect evaporated) was a longing for, to quote Billy Idol’s ‘Rebel Yell’, "more, more, more"...

I decided to distract myself with another ponderous point: is mint chocolate chip supposed to be white or green? As a rather husky youngster, I recall summer trips to the ice cream stand; but depending on which place we patronized, the color of said ice cream varied. It seemed the name changed too, the 'mint' alternately jumping (like Frogger) from the beginning to the end of the posted moniker, and back again… Does any of this even matter? Probably not (I am a realist), but interestingly, my rant is justified (albeit creepily) by IceCream.com: "as a Mint Chocolate Chip lover, you tend to be ambitious and confident… yet a little skeptical about life." Hmmmm… (By the way, to find out your Ice Cream Flavorology (is that a word?) check out this)

In the 80's (I have heard), a hilarious politically- and socially-minded cartoon strip named 'Bloom County' by Berkeley Breathed featured, among an array of motley characters, Opus the penguin. A gentle soul, Opus often found solace from the less-than-ideal world we inhabit by plopping himself into nature’s womb to refresh and renew his spirit. Maybe these ice cream sammies were just my version of Opus' 'dandelion break', seeing how it's never going to get warm enough here in Western NY for dandelions...

P.S. Maybe next time I'll actually cook… if you’re good!

I like to think I'm tall.

I'm 5'4" actually probably 5' 3 3/4" but lets just round up shall we? My hair is up today anyway!

Now to some, like 99% of the women in my family, that's totally tall. To the rest of the world... that's pretty short. Just the other day my coworker was standing next to me (me in my oh so comfy flats, her in crazy tall stilettos) oh and did I mention she's like 5' 10" to boot? anyway I get sidetracked... she looks over (I mean down) at me and is like MAN you're short today HAHAHAHAHA. There are good points to being short though!! Whenever I go for a hike with my friend Matt (who is like 6'3" or something crazy like that) I always have a safe travel down the trail... while he is constantly running into low hanging branches, HA take that tall Matthew! :D

What does this have to do with chow you ask? Why because we are making strawberry SHORTcakes??? get it???

*crickets chirping*

Ok fine fine, I thougth it was funny...

Well then, here's the recipe. My roomie made these the other night and they were super tasty! Thanks Steph!! (yes for those of you who didn't know my house mate's name is also steph...)

Classic Strawberry Shortcakes
recipe slightly adapted from Betty Crocker

2 1/3 cups Original Bisquick mix
.5 cup milk
1.5 tablespoons splenda blend (or use 3 Tbs sugar)
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
Sweetened sliced strawberries
Vanilla ice cream

1. Heat oven to 425°F.
2. Stir Bisquick mix, milk, sugar and butter until soft dough forms. Drop by 6 spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.
3. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Split warm shortcakes; fill and top with strawberries and whipped topping. (Sweeten strawberries before making shortcakes so sugar has time to dissolve; for each quart of sliced strawberries, stir in 1/2 cup sugar.)
High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): Heat oven to 450°F. Decrease sugar to 1 tablespoon.
Drool-worthy amounts of ice cream... ready to be chowed!

For some, Fall is a colorful transition into the winter months. For others, it means shorter days and grey skies. Whichever way you see things, a nostalgic summer treat mixed with the unique or traditional flavors of Fall can’t help but bring a smile to your face. On Saturday night, friends gathered to experience the tastes of Autumn from local creameries featuring Fall flavors:

Pumpkin
Pumpkin Pecan Crunch
Orange Chocolate Chip
Maple Walnut
Apple Carmel Crunch
Cinnamon
Maple Walnut Custard
Chocolate Almond Custard

The ice creams and custards came from three local shops, Bruster's Real Ice Cream, Corn Hill Creamery, and Abbotts Frozen Custard.

We also had some coconut milk ice cream for the unfortunate lactose intolerant in the group :) It was torture for her seeing all the flavors but she still had fun :)

Foodbuzz made this night possible and I am so excited to be part of 24 24 24. I mean, what's better than a bunch of friends sharing ice cream?!

Some friends enjoyed the ice cream a little bit more than others ;)
Chow Sugar, CHOW!!!

The tasting started will a small scoop of cinnamon ice cream from Brusters; most were skeptical but everyone enjoyed the light flavor.

Next came a BRIGHT orange pumpkin, also from Brusters. Some were put off by the intense color but others fell in love with the equally intense pumpkin flavor.

Pumpkin Pecan Crunch from Corn Hill Creamery was a less intense color and packed a spicier punch; people found this one to be a bit icy and less creamy than the first pumpkin.

Orange Chocolate chip, also from Corn Hill Creamery, left a strong aftertaste which turned out to be polarizing: people either loved it or hated it.

Apple Carmel Crunch from Brusters was as decadent and sinful as it sounds. The texture was amazing and the flavors were like eating real home made apple pie a la mode. YUM! This one was my personal favorite by far!

Maple Walnut from Brusters was chocked full of huge walnut chunks and had the taste of real maple syrup, none of that artificial cr@p :)

Maple Walnut frozen custard from Abbotts was next. This one was totally smooth and a bit more artificial-tasting maple (think mrs butterworth) although one of the tasters preferred it over the first one.

The final flavor of the night was Chocolate Almond from Abbotts. This custard was a rich delicacy brimming with hearty almond chunks.

After all of the scoops were chowed, everyone was invited back for more of whatever flavor they wanted. Once everyone's bellies were full, the votes were tallied and the winner of flavor of the night was....

CINNAMON!!!

Yes amazingly the flavor that people thought they would like the least came out on top! The other surprise about it... it's a no sugar added / non fat ice cream!! And everyone loved it!!! They had no idea it was a "better for you" ice cream :) At only 100 calories, 0g fat, 7g of sugar, 5g of protein per half cup, this ice cream tasted as decadent as all the others!! I've had plenty of gross fat free ice creams before and this one tastes nothing like them... kinda makes me think of the fat free Seinfeld episode... maybe it's not really fat free.. hmmmmmmmm

A bowl with a little of everything enjoyed by my roomie who was stuck at work during the tasting part of the night. Check out the neon orange scoop in the back right... WOW! now that is some intense color!

I hope you all enjoyed our ice cream tasting, I know we did :) Check back for tons of recipes here at Steph Chows. I'll be posting later this week about the potent apple pie punch I made for the party. Thanks again to Foodbuzz!! You guys rock!

Chow!!
I have a surprise... and it's pretty exciting...

So foodbuzz says it's ok to talk about it now... Not sure if you know anything about FoodBuzz but they hosted the first ever 24 24 24 last month... 24 meals, 24 blogs, 24 hours. It's basically a big party held all over the world!! So I wrote a proposal to take part last month but I didn't get picked to host :( but I did this time!!!!! Wooohooo!!! So on Saturday I'm hosting Cold Comfort a fall flavors ice cream tasting!!! It's like a wine tasting but better since it involves ice cream ;)

So make sure to check back on Sunday to read all about the festivities!

Michelle and Joe Charles made Sweet Corn Ice Cream!! And if you are ever interested in taking a belly dance class or strip aerobics (totally took it and it was fantastic... don't worry you keep your clothing on!) check out Goddess Hour where Michelle works!!! I know some were skeptical but it was really good! And a nice complement to Tod's corn cake yum! I wish I had gotten pictures of everyone so I could post a picture of everyone along with the dish they made... ok thought for next time!!

Come back tomorrow for some corn nachos! these things were addictive!

You already know I'm a gym rat.. when you are a gym rat you learn about things like protein powder... I know what you are thinking.. yuck right? Nope! Especially if you sneak it into a yummy delicious ice cream shake! John and I made these the other day after a run as a snack. So tasty!! We served them up in wine glasses too for a laugh.

while taking a sip "Hmmm this was a good year"
while swirling and sniffing "yes a very nice bouquet with chocolaty undertones"

yes we are nuts... it's true :)

Coffee / chocolate protein shake
1 cup ice coffee (see recipe here)
1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder
1/2 cup packed low fat coffee ice cream (i use low fat wegmans cappuccino chip mmmm)
1/2 cup skim milk

Toss in a blender and blend away...

The 100% whey chocolate protein powder has 120 calories in a scoop and 23g protein and it tastes like chocolate milk when you mix it up.. yum! I buy it at BJ's for cheep but here is a link

mmmmmmm

Today is a wonderful glorious day... yes that is right... it's Ben and Jerry's free cone day! As most of you know I'm a gym rat. I was finishing up my daily gym routine when a person mentioned that today was free cone day. Beth's friend you rock for telling us! So after a night of lifting legs and doing some cardio we all walked over to the scoop shop so conveniently located on the RIT campus.. mmmmm decisions decisions what flavor to get.

There was a new flavor: coconut. I love coconut gelato or helado depending where you are and what ethnicity it's coming from. When I worked in Manhattan I would look for the helado carts every day. $1 got you a large dixi cup full of the creamy coconut laced stuff... mmmmmm *drool* I figured ben and jerry although good guys would no be able to compete with my street helado so instead I went for the Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz... yes it requires 3 buzz's :D And at 240 calories and 15 grams of fat per half cup... yes I certainly just undid whatever good I had done at the gym. But like nana said "everything in moderation" and as grandpa said "life is short eat dessert first" :D good words to live by!! So I ate my ice cream guilt free and enjoyed every last bite. YUM! Now... what should I have for dinner....
